There are times in life when we don’t have the energy or faith     1     (overcome) our problems. We can’t find the words to pray or the     2     (strong) to push ahead. That is when our friends come to help us out. Friends remind us through their actions that we are not alone. Even when some friends don’t always know     3     to help, they want to be there for us.

Author Parker J. Palmer in his book, Let Your Life Speak, shares about the time he was battling depression. A guy     4     (name) Bill asked Parker’s permission to drop by his house in the afternoons. Bill would sit Parker in the chair, get down on his knees in front of him, remove his shoes and socks     5     massage (按摩) his feet for half an hour. Bill had found the only place in Parker’s body     6     he could still experience feelings and reconnect with the human race. Bill would     7     (simple) do this and say very little. When he talked, he would not give advice but mirror Parker’s feelings. This simple act of care was what     8     (help) Parker get through his dark time.

We are     9     (thank) to the friends who sit with us. And we are grateful     10     the opportunity to be that friend to offer our presence to those who are suffering. Even if we are unsure of what to do, we can just be present.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了亲密的友谊的三个“果实”,论述了朋友的重要性。
2 . 在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。

There are many benefits of friendship.     1     (general) speaking, close friendships have three “fruits”.

The first fruit is the peace that     2     (come) from sharing with friends our joy, sadness, success and failure. Friendship has a double advantage—happiness takes     3     a greater meaning and a trouble shared becomes a trouble halved!

The second fruit is the better understanding and judgement that may be achieved through conversations with friends. We often find it easier     4     (recognize) other people’s weakness than our own. As     5     result, our judgments might be one-sided if we are guided only by our own feelings. Also,     6     we want to talk our problems over with a friend, we have to put our thoughts into words first, which helps make our thoughts clearer.

The third fruit is the help that a friend may offer in many different ways. Friends can help us achieve anything     7     we want during life and perhaps, even after     8     (die).

Finally,     9     (enjoy) the company of a crowd is not the same as being with friends. Friends should     10     (choose) carefully. In this way, we can better walk the path of life.

My Life on an Island

We live on the island of Hale. It’s about four kilometers long and two kilometers wide at its broadest point, and it’s joined to the mainland by a causeway     1     (call) Stand—a narrow road built across the mouth of the river     2     separates us from the rest of the country. Most of the time you wouldn’t know we’re on an island because the river mouth between us and the mainland is just a vast stretch of tall grasses and brown mud. But when there’s a high tide and the water rises a half meter or so above the road and nothing can pass     3     the tide goes out again a few hours later, then you know it’s an island.

We were on our way back     4     the mainland. My old brother, Dominic, had just finished his first year at university in a town 150 km away. Dominic’s train was due in at five and he’d asked for a lift back from the station. Now, Dad normally hates being disturbed when he     5     (write) (which is just about all the time), and he also hates having to go anywhere, but despite the typical sighs and moans –why can’t he get a taxi? What’s wrong with the bus? — I could tell by the flash in the eyes that he was really looking forward to     6     (see) Dominic.

So, anyway, Dad and I had driven to the mainland and picked up Dominic from the station. He had been talking non-stop from the moment he’d got in the car. University this, university that, writers, books, parties, people, money…I didn’t like the way he spoke and waved his hands around     7     he was some kind of scholar or something. It was embarrassing. It made me feel uncomfortable—that kind of discomfort you feel when someone you like, someone close to you, suddenly starts acting like a complete idiot. And I didn’t like the way he was ignoring me, either. For all the attention I was getting I     8     as well not have been there. I felt a stranger in my own car.

We were about halfway across when I saw a boy. My first thought was how odd it was     9     (see) someone walking on the Stand. You don’t often see people walking around here. As we drew     10     (close), he became clearer. He was actually a young man rather than a boy. It’s hard to explain…

9 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

I knew I was not supposed to be quite so excited about Christmas presents. At age eleven, as my mom’s “grown-up” girl, I had to keep myself cool. But if I had got a chance, I made     1     most of the chance and checked each present under the Christmas tree.

The company of my family went broke (破产) but we couldn’t turn to     2    (other) for help. It was typically a sad event for us. It was so hard and     3    (stress) a year for my family. However, our parents suggested that we should live and work     4    (positive). My parents had to save every cent in case we couldn’t afford some necessities. We     5    (struggle) to make a living during the time. Whenever my mom looked at those presents, she tended     6    (sigh) and looked quite anxious. I had heard the phrase, “Giving is better than receiving,” but thought anyone     7     had said that must have been out of their mind. Getting presents was the whole point!

On Christmas morning, we eagerly rushed into the living room and desired to get our favorite presents. It was our special     8    (prefer). “Here’s another one for you, honey,” said Mom. I looked at the package and was     9     (confuse). It was not mine. It was my mom’s. It was amazing that I found a new label (标签) had been put on it, with my name written in my mother’s handwriting. Ⅰsaid, “Mom, I can’t...” I was stopped by my mother’s joyful look. It was a hair dryer. She offered the gift to me rather than keep it to herself.

Now, as an adult with children in my life, I can understand my mom’s real thought. I see now she was not “giving up her Christmas gift” as I had thought, but was finding an even greater joy because giving truly is better than receiving.     10     summary, my mom’s simple act has a deep effect on me.
