1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

From the day Tony was born, Jeff refused to let his son’s disabilities hold him back. Tony has cerebral palsy (脑瘫), making it difficult for him to walk. Determined to show Tony that he could pursue his dream of being an athlete, when he was 15 years old, Jeff signed him up with Team Triumph, an organization that helps kids with disabilities engage in endurance sports.

“It gave me a new perspective on life, Tony said. He even dreamed of walking marathon one day. From then on, Tony became addicted to racing, and Jeff also wanted to be a part of it. Though Jeff had been a minor league baseball player, endurance (耐力) sports were new to him. He made up his mind to achieve Tony’s dream and started doing things he never dreamed about. He began waking up at 4 a. m. So he could run in the silent street while pushing Tony in a special wheelchair called a racing chair. Every morning, he drove himself to run increasingly longer distances. Soon, he and Tony were entering 5K races, then on to Iron-man triathlons.

Finishing the Iron-man competition in under 16 hours would be another dream for Jeff and Tony. The big day came. The race began with a 2.4-mile swim in the river. Jeff helped Tony into a kayak (皮船). With one end of a rope tied to a belt around his back and the other end to the kayak, Jeff eased himself into the water. Swimming while dragging another person is quite tough. The pair completed the swim in 90 minutes, and then it was on to the next leg; a 112-mile bicycle ride. Their custom-built bike had an additional seat in the back for Tony that faced backward.

After completing the demanding bike part in roughly nine hours, they set their sights on the final leg of the race-a 26.2-mile marathon with Jeff pushing Tony in the racing chair. They’d been competing for 10 hours, with only 6 hours left for the race. The first 7 miles went smoothly.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Almost every childhood memory I have is centred on food. Telling stories around a crowded table at holiday dinners, the smell of roasting vegetables, the sensation (感受) of heat coming from the kitchen, all picture a familiar feeling of love and comfort.

My favourite memory of all is of my grandparents making and baking bread together. To this day, I have never tasted bread that is as delicious as theirs. No other loaf has ever been made with that kind of powerful, unconditional love.

When our son Brian, one of seventh graders, began to refuse usual communication with me, I felt desperate. How I missed those lovely old days when he couldn’t wait to tell me his stories in kindergarten the moment I arrived home without getting changed! And there were also times when he brought loads of storybooks to me and demanded to be told all the stories before going to bed. But I didn’t know since when everything changed. There was hardly any sharing about his daily school life with friends or any trouble about his schoolwork. Most of the time, his bedroom door was closed. The cold silence between us seemed to warn me that love between us began to fade.

At that time, like most mothers, I couldn’t focus on work and couldn’t sleep well. Why did things go off track so much? Was it because my work took away most of my energy that family love was taken for granted? Was it because my only precious spare time went too much to my two-year-old baby daughter that Brian’s need for my company was ignored? The more I reflected, the more I felt myself to blame and it was my responsibility to find a way out.

One day, as my eyes landed onto the bread on the kitchen table, I was reminded of those sweet childhood memories, “Could food help us make a change?” I wondered.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Daddy, I want to ask your permission to study in America,” I said to my father a few months before my graduation from high school. But hardly before I finished, he shouted, “No!”

“But why?” I replied. “If you are worried about money, it will be OK since I have got a scholarship…”

But he refused to give in. At the moment, I didn’t know what to say. For more than two years, I had been working very hard to pass all the necessary examinations. I had not told my father because I wanted to give him a pleasant surprise. I thought he would be very proud of me because it was many of my classmates’ parents’ dream to send their children to study abroad.

“Why do I have to get your permission? I am already 18 and I’m not a kid anymore.” I said angrily and rushed to my bedroom, shutting the door violently. Blinded by anger, I found that I could not stay at my hometown any longer. Late that night, I slipped out of the house and decided to take the bus to the railway station to start my own life as far away from my home as possible.

The bus stop was just two blocks away from my home. When I got there, I found that I forgot to take any money with me and missed the last bus. I did not want to go back home, so I sat down on the bench and closed my eyes to have a break.

Suddenly, I was woken up by my phone. I looked around and found the road was deserted and the street was so quiet that I regretted that I had left home in such a hurry. I picked up the phone and answered the phone even without checking the number.

“Have you had a good sleep? It’s going to rain. Shall we go home now?”

Jim slumped on the couch. Mother’s Day was coming up, and he didn’t have a present. “How can I buy a present without money?” he thought.

Jim picked up the newspaper that was lying on the couch. He noticed a large advertisement on the front page. The local department store was sponsoring a contest. “Tell us why your mom is special and win a shopping spree(疯狂购物) for her,” said the ad.

“This is perfect!” thought Jim. He ran to his room with the newspaper, taking a pencil and a blank piece of paper from his desk, he started to write.

“My mom is the best mother in the world. She always makes a lunch for me to take to school, and she never forgets my dessert. She reads as many books to me before bed as I want. She always remembers to check under the bed for monsters. And she gives the best hug, but never in front of my friends, who would laugh at me for hugging my mom.”

Jim liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp from his dad. He ran to the mailbox with his entry(参赛作品), “Mom will love having a shopping spree,” he thought.

Jim checked the mailbox every day for his prize. Days passed by, and then weeks. Soon it was the day before Mother’s Day. Jim still hadn’t heard anything about the contest.

“What am I going to do now?” he wondered. He didn’t have a present, and he didn’t have a shopping spree, and he still didn’t have any money. He had to think of something. Jim closed his eyes and curled his toes and thought so hard that his ears hurt.

My wife and I never had a green thumb when it came to keeping plants alive far more than a few weeks. So, when I was diagnosed with cancer we didn’t even think about adding a plant to our small apartment. But one day, my friend stopped by and gave us a beautiful plant as a gift, insisting that it would bring life to our home and a sense of calmness during this difficult time.

Surprisingly, the plant took off and grew beautifully, and it brought a sense of joy to our home that we desperately needed. Tending to the plant gave me a sense of accomplishment at a time when I sometimes felt useless.

I am a physician, and taking care of the plant made me feel like a caregiver once again. It was nice to be able to nurture something and watch it grow. Since my diagnosis in August 2018, far too often, it seemed, I had to rely on help from other people. The enormous change left me feeling aimless and unsettled. Watering the plant, as small an act as it was, connected me to a core part of my old identity. Plants and people could still depend on me.

For the next few months, I was recovering from surgery and receiving radiation. Despite my ongoing treatments, we found some peace through tending to the plant. The simple act of watering and watching it grow gave us something to focus 4 outside of my health. It became a small but meaningful part of our lives.

Then, mysteriously, it began to show signs of losing liveliness.

I couldn’t stop thinking about watermelons. I’d saved all y money to buy one. One giant, juicy   wonderful watermelon all for me. I was going to eat it all up, for the seeds.

At the store I searched carefully, looking for the biggest, juiciest, and most wonderful one I could find. There it was. I picked up my dream watermelon and put it on the floor. I rolled my treasure to the checkout line and waited for the cashier to weigh. Fifteen pounds!

After   paying,I rolled it out the door , then along the sidewalk, three blocks to my house. Sweat fell in drops from my forehead onto the watermelon. in drops from my forehead onto the watermelon.

"Lucy! What are you doing with that watermelon?" Mom asked in surprise.

“I saved   up my money and bought it at the grocery store. I’m going to eating it all by myself.”

Mom frowned, and warned, “You'll get sick.”

"Please,” I begged. “I've been saving all my money for it.”

Mom thought for a while, and then smiled meaningfully as if she knew something. She asked me to roll my giant, juicy, wonderful watermelon out the back door to our picnic table in the yard. She brought out a knife and some paper plates. My sister followed her.“Oh,watermelon,"she exclaimed with joy. “I want some.”

“Sorry,”I told her. “I'm going to eat it all by myself.”“Mom!” she cried, deep disappointment in her eyes.

“Your sister saved her money and bought it herself. She decides what to do with it.”

My brother came out next.“Watermelon! Can I have some?” he asked eagerly.“No way,"I refused him without hesitation. “I'm going to eat it all by myself.” “Mom!” my brother protested loudly.

“It's your sister's watermelon. She decides.”

“You can't eat that all by yourself," he challenged.

“Yes,I can!”I declared firmly.

My father came out. “Oh,watermelon!” he said, seeing it.

"Don't even ask,”said my brother.

“She won't share,” my sister added.

Mom cut the watermelon into eight pieces in total.I reached for my first piece and took a bite.Red juice ran down my chin(下巴).

My Dad’s Best Flower

I remember my first home was a small apartment on the second floor with a lovely and spacious balcony. When my mom was busy in the kitchen, she let me stay on the balcony watching the kids playing in the street. On that balcony I played sometimes with my elder sister, Maria. She was seven years old and when my mom was absent, she was like a mother to me. The balcony was a great hobby place for my father. After his work he used to grow carnations (康乃馨) in flower boxes. His carnations were red, pink and white, and everyone appreciated them for their beauty.

He took care of them with so much love and devotion. He dealt carefully with his flowers like a mother taking care of her baby. Many times I sat on the floor of the balcony for hours observing him and his lovely flowers with patience. He was always doing something on that balcony. He was watering them every day, cleaning the balcony floor, changing the potting soil and when the stems were thick, strong and high enough, he started his improvement operation attentively like a doctor.

My dad took a tiny knife and with his left hand he held the stem of the carnation and measured the height. Then he made a small mark on the stem with his finger. Afterwards he made a sharp cut with the knife, just enough to fit in again of barley (插穗的芽). Then he bandaged the stem with a small bandage. His job was then to water the plants and to take care of them. “No one should touch them,” he said to Mom. Every day, when he came home from work he went straight to the balcony.

Mom used to tell us, “Do not touch Daddy’s flowers.” For us it was a fascinating experience to watch how the small stems were growing and making flowers. When the carnations had grown big enough, my dad enjoyed watching them every day. We the kids did too.

When I was young, my mother was going to Florida to visit my grandmother. I begged her to take me with her. “I’ll take you, but remember,” my mother warned me, “Grandma is sick.“ I had seen plenty of sick people before, so I figured it wouldn’t be a big deal. Besides, by the time we got to Florida, my grandma would probably be okay. Then we would have fun just as we used to. I remembered how excited I had felt the summer before when my grandma carried me on her shoulders down the streets.

Grandma was a great storyteller and her stories made me feel special whenever she told them. ”Grandma, tell me a story,“ I’d say, and she would always begin the story, “Once upon a time there was a boy named Billy…” Every story started with a boy named after me. When I arrived at her house, my first words were going to be, “Grandma, tell me a story.”

When I got to Grandma’s house, she didn’t come out to meet me. Even after I ran up the steps, she still didn’t come out to meet me. I went into her bedroom. Instantly, I was seized by terror and disgust, because what I saw in that room wasn’t my happy-go-lucky(无忧无虑的)grandmother. It was a crumpled(皱的)body, thin and weak.

That night as I lay in bed, I heard my grandma moaning in pain. It had the same effect on me as someone running fingernails across the blackboard. It was so annoying that I just wanted to tell her to stop. However, I didn’t and it continued all night.

A few weeks after we came home, my mother asked me whether it was all right if Grandma came to live with us. I said yes, but in reality I never wanted to see her again. Although my grandma lived with us for the next few months, I never went into her room. She couldn’t get out of bed. I didn’t have to see her.

Once in a village lived a young sculptor (雕刻师), who used to make very beautiful statues and by this he earned a good income.

He had a son who started making statues from his childhood, and his son could make good statues. Father would be happy with his son's work but every time he would point out one or other mistakes in his son's work,

Still his son never complained and continued to improve his work, following the advice of his father. Because of Son's continuous improvement, his work started becoming better than his father's. Then came a time when people started to pay more money for his statues than his father's.

Son got young and was earning better but his father continued to point out mistakes in his son's work. Now Son didn't like it. He couldn't accept his shortcoming and didn't work wholeheartedly.

Then one day, Son lost his patience and said, “You are pointing out my mistakes as if you were a big sculptor. But if that's the case then your statues would have sold at higher price than mine. I don't think I need your advice anymore. My statues are perfect.”

After that day, Father stopped giving any advice or pointing out any mistakes in his statues.

For some months Son was happy but then he realized that people didn't praise his work as they used to. The price of his statues also started to fall.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

John Henderson was driving home late last night from an exhausting business trip. He had put off visiting the company’s new headquarters in order to get home before midnight, and now he was having trouble staying awake. He turned up the radio and tried to concentrate on the news—something about a robbery, but his eyes kept on closing. His wife, Marsha, was back home in Dayton, and he missed having her company on this long trip.

It was then that he noticed the hitchhiker (搭便车者) at the side of the road. Without even thinking about what he was doing, he slowed down and stopped the car. He couldn’t help feeling sorry for the young man who looked so wet and miserable in the rain. “Get in,” he said.

John remembered having to hitchhike home from the university before he had a car. He couldn’t stand sitting at the side of the road for hours, waiting for rides. The hitchhiker got in and immediately John was sorry that he had picked him up. The young man had a strange face and very sharp eyes. His clothes were old and dirty, and his long hair needed cutting. The hitchhiker lit a cigarette and said he was going to Woodsville but when John asked him other questions, the young man avoided giving him any personal information and changed the subject. John began to sweat and his thoughts turned nervously to his wallet and all the money he was carrying on the backseat. He desperately tried to remember what the newscaster had said earlier about a robbery. “Don’t be ridiculous!” He thought to himself. “Stop imagining things! This guy isn’t a criminal. What’s the use of panicking?”

At this moment, John felt like having a cigarette, even though he had quit smoking three months before. He asked his passenger for one but before lighting it, he had to wait for his hands to stop shaking.
