1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I couldn't believe that my father shouted at me and called me a fool! In all my 18 years, I'd never heard him say anything like that to anyone. But then, I had never shouted the words "I hate you!" in his face, either. I guess we were both pretty angry. I had been saving money from my part-time job for three years and now I wanted to use it to buy a car. He wanted me to save it for college expenses.

I knew that we both needed time to cool off. I left him sitting at the kitchen table, ran down the stairs to the driveway, and jumped on my bike. I headed for the road that runs along the river. It's usually pretty quiet there and I've found that it's a good place to go to when l need to think something out. Riding along, I kept thinking over and over, "But it's my money! I earned it!" Little by little, I calmed down. Circling back toward town later, I stopped in the park. I had a drink of water and decided to avoid Dad for the rest of the day.

He must have had the same idea—about avoiding me, that is. He didn't come up to my room to say goodnight, and I didn't go downstairs. I couldn't get to sleep that night. I kept going over our argument in my mind. He felt I didn't really need a car. After all, I could use his anytime I wanted to. In addition, he paid for my driver's insurance and bought all the gas. It's just that all my friends were buying their own cars and I wanted one of my own. I really wanted that car. I finally fell asleep and when I woke up I didn't really change my mind. But I felt a little better.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was my tenth birthday and I would have the biggest party ever. The guest list, which I kept at the back of my homework assignment folder, began with a few close friends. But in the two weeks before that special Friday night, it had quickly grown from seven girls to a total of seventeen. Nearly every girl in my fifth grade class had been invited to sleep over at my house for a big celebration. I was especially happy when each guest I invited excitedly accepted the invitation. It would be a night of scary stories, pizza and lots of presents. But as I later realized, I would truly treasure only one gift I received that night.

The family room was a flurry of shouts and bursts of laughter. We had just finished a game of Twister and were lining up for the limbo when the doorbell rang. I hardly paid attention to who might be at the door. What did it matter, really? Everyone I liked from school was there, in my family room, preparing to lean under the stick held by my two sisters.

“Judy, come here for a minute,” Mom called from the front door.

I rolled my eyes and shrugged to my friends as if to say, “Now who would dare bother me at a time like this?” What I really wanted to say was: It's tough being popular!

I rounded the bend toward the front door, then stopped. I knew my mouth dropped open and I could feel my face turning red, for there on the front porch stood Sarah Westley-the quiet girl who sat next to me in music class and she was holding a gift.

I thought about the growing list in the back of my assignment folder. How had I forgotten to invite Sarah?

I remembered that I only added a name to the list when someone had shown an interest in me. But Sarah had never done that. Never once had she asked me about my birthday party. Never once did she squeeze into the circle of kids surrounding me at lunch time. And once she even helped me carry my backpack while I dragged my science project to our third floor classroom.

3 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Carlos woke up late that Saturday. It was his birthday. As he opened his eyes, he could hear the sounds from the street coming through his open window. He could hear people talking loudly. He heard kids playing and yelling (大喊). There was music coming from someone standing on the corner. He heard the cars, buses and motorbikes running past his apartment. These were all the normal sounds he heard every day, but something was wrong.

When he listened for the sounds that normally came from his apartment, everything was silent. He did not hear his mother cooking in the kitchen. She always made a big breakfast on Saturdays. He did not hear his sister Maria jumping up and down or fighting with their brother Jose. What was wrong? The house was completely silent. The only noise was coming from outside his window.

Carlos looked at the clock across the room. It said ten o'clock. Something was very wrong! Carlos quickly got up and got dressed. He looked out of the window and saw everyone walking and talking. That was all normal. What was not normal was how quiet it was inside of his apartment. Carlos went slowly to the door and listened, but did not hear anything. He opened the door to his room a little and looked around. He looked down the hallway (门厅) toward the living room. He did not see anything. He was nervous and scared, wondering, “What is going on?”

Slowly he walked out of his room and into the hallway. His stomach was making noise since he was so hungry. He started toward the kitchen. His feet moved slowly as he walked, not knowing what to expect. “Mom? Jose? Maria? Where are you?” he called out, but no one answered. “Where is everyone?” he thought to himself. Just then, Carlos thought he heard a noise coming from the kitchen. It sounded like someone was there. He moved slowly toward the kitchen doorway, and thought to himself, “What’s going on? Why is everything so quiet? Who is in the kitchen?”

A Sweet Song

"Nothing will ever be the same again," Ally whispered. She sank slowly into her father's favorite chair and stared at the small American flag on his desk. It was the flag which Chief Russell had given to her after the funeral last summer, when he hugged her and told her how proud the Police Department was of her dad's work for them. His tears had warmed Ally's cheeks; her own tears were still frozen inside her heart.

Ally looked at her father's picture on the bookcase. Dad was sitting in the middle of a stream, wet through but grinning proudly. "I miss you, Dad," she said softly. By this time last year she had already taken dozens of pictures. Ever since she could remember, she and Dad had been a team, searching the woods behind the house each weekend for a glimpse of the special wood warbler(林中莺).

Ally reached for the first photo album she and Dad had put together. On the cover a tiny orange bird with blue-gray wings and sharp black eyes peered out of the photo her father had clipped from a local newspaper. Ally smiled, remembering the excited look on his face when he first showed her the pretty bird. "Ally, I bet if we search real hard, we'll see this little guy together some day."

They'd never spotted the warbler, but her father had an amazing way of making each outing seem special. Staying with Dad, Ally felt comfortable. "If only I could get that good feeling back," she thought, sighing.

Staring at the bird, suddenly, she knew exactly what she had to do. Grabbing the-little flag, she placed her camera around her neck and hurried outside. Ally stuck the flag among the flowers in the garden. "Please let me see the warbler," she murmured to herself. She gave her worried Mom a kiss and then set off into the woods.

Boys like to be considered to be brave, but what kind of things can be considered to be brave? It is not a question that can be answered by words, but by the actual deed. A boy with the name Henry gave us a good example. Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They and together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school, they saw some people fighting in the street comer. Ronny said excitedly, “Some people are fighting! Let's go and have a look!” But Henry refused, “It's none of our business. We'd better go home and don't get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me.

“You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Ronny, and off he ran to the spot with some other boys. Henry had to go home alone and didn't think about it anymore. But Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn't want to play with him. Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Ronny for his rude behavior, because he had learned that true courage was shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys laughter and continued to stick to his thought and go to school and study as well. However, Ronny didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had his new friends who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事,

My dad, George, only had an eighth grade education. A quiet man, he didn’t understand my world of school activities. From age 14, he worked. And his dad, Albert, took the money my dad earned and used it to pay family expenses.

I didn’t really understand his world either: He was a livestock trucker, and I thought that I would surpass (超过) anything he had accomplished by the time I walked across the stage at high school graduation.

Summers in the mid-70s were spent at home shooting baskets, hitting a baseball, or throwing a football, preparing for my future as a quarterback on a football team. In poor weather, I read about sports or practiced my trombone (长号).

The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work in his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and we were off, riding down the field looking for weeds to spray with chemicals. After a short way, the farmer stopped and pointed at a weed which we missed. Then we began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identify different grasses like cockleburs, lamb’s-quarters, foxtails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn’t sure how much it would amount to.

At home, my dad said, “A job’s a big step to growing up. I’m glad you will be contributing to the household.” My dad’s words made me realize that my earnings might not be mine to do with as I wished.

My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn’t interested. I decided it was not fair that I had to contribute my money.

Thanks to my conservative(保守的)family background,I didn't believe in angels(天使).That is,not until Christmas Eve of 1979, when an angel brought unexpected joy to my home.

After divorce,my two daughters not only lost the safety of a whole family, they also tearfully(泪汪汪地)left behind neighborhood friends, a familiar school, and a large house. These had all been replaced with a narrow two-bedroom apartment in a poorer part of town .

I arranged to take my vacation during my children's winter holiday. We spent evenings planning activities: games, a pizza night , and evening car rides to view neighborhood holiday lights .With expectation , they seemed to be in good spirits .

The week before the school break, however, I was fired because of the company's poor performance. By Christmas Eve,sadness covered our vacation plans. An afternoon outing did little to improve our mood .

On returning to our apartment, we were astonished to see a beautiful,six-foot Christmas tree propped(支撑)against our front door. In silent wonder, we looked back and forth, from the tree to one another and around the empty street. Excitement built, and the girls begged to keep the tree.

"Maybe it's for us,"my older daughter guessed.

"Yeah,"repeated my younger child,"I bet an angel brought it to us!"

I laughed aloud at the idea of an angel bringing a Christmas tree to my family. Caught up in their happiness, I announced the tree "ours".

We moved it inside and headed out to the only upermarkets in our small town open that late on Christmas Eve. With holiday goods down to half price,I agreed to buy a tree stand(底座),two boxes of colorful balls , some colorful lights , and one paper angel.

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE

The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.

The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the   sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.

Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When I was 8, my dad helped me buy me the first old bike from our neighbor. I earned $ 60 by cutting grass and sweeping the snow and my dad raised the other half. 1 would pay him back over the next six months. Although it wasn't in the latest style, it was my ticket to the adult world.

I spent that summer and autumn riding happily. My sister Liz never had a chance to have her own bike. We had older brothers and sisters, a few of whom 'had bad taste on bikes. Now, however, I was able to ride to every corner of the town, sometimes even as far as the beach. In those days before one gained a driver's license, owning a good bike was a proud thing.

Just before the Christmas deadline to pay my dad back, we were hit by several snow-storms. This allowed me to sweep enough driveways to pay off my debt. I was now officially a bike owner. Working for a bike of my own was a special feeling unlike others.

However, my joy was short-lived after my dad called my sister Liz to the kitchen. “I have one more gift for you,” he said as he opened the door. There, on the steps, stood a new bike. I didn't hear her screams of joy. At the moment, all I could hear was the engine of the grass machine, the sound of the metal snow shovel(铲子) on the road.

After several weeks of finding me unhappy, my dad finally pulled me aside. “Is every-thing OK?” I complained, “It's unfair, I worked so hard for my bike and it's not even new. Then Liz got a new one as soon as I made the final payment. She didn't have to do anything for it.”

My dad smiled. “She didn't have to do anything for it because the bike is not really completely for her,” he said, and then left the room.

10 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

The summers in my hometown of Desert Springs were exceptionally hot, and all that people wanted to do was nothing but swimming in the public pool. This also meant that the most coveted (令人垂涎的) summer job for a high school student was to be a swimming instructor. You got to spend the whole summer in the pool and it was really glamorous (有魅力的), too!

However, I did not get a job as a swimming instructor. I tried really hard—I’m a good swimmer and I practiced my interview answers for weeks beforehand, but the pool offered me a job as a lifeguard instead.

Being a lifeguard wasn’t nearly as fun or glamorous as being a swimming instructor. Mostly, being a lifeguard meant sitting next to the pool, sweating in the hot sun, and making sure everyone obeyed the rules. “Being a lifeguard is an important job,” my dad kept reminding me, “and you have to be one of the best swimmers in the whole town. If someone gets hurt or in distress in the pool, it’s your job to rescue them.” I knew that, and I wanted to do well at such an important job, but I was still disappointed. No one at school next year would be impressed with a story of how I sat in a chair all summer and got sunburnt.

But finally I took the job anyway. Once I began work, I quickly learned that being a lifeguard was much more involved than I thought. With half of the town at the pool at any given time, there were a lot of people to keep an eye on.

I was also still jealous of the swimming instructors, who I could see every day from my seat in the lifeguard chair, which was almost eight feet tall to give me a good view and right by the side of the pool. The swimming instructors always looked like they were having so much fun, giving their lessons and playing around during their breaks in the cool, inviting water.

One afternoon, midway through the summer, I was arguing with a group of elementary schoolers about the no running rule when the sound of a woman shouting caught my attention. “Carey! Carey!” I glanced around and saw a woman searching frantically (疯狂地) for something. Immediately, my eyes went to the pool.
