1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

An eight-year-old child heard her parents talking about her little brother. All she knew was that he was very sick and they had no money. Only a very expensive operation could save him now and there was no one to lend them the money.

When she heard her daddy say to her tearful mother, “only a miracle(奇迹)can save him now.” The little girl went to her bedroom and pulled her money from its hiding place and counted it carefully.

She hurried to a drugstore (药店) with the money in her hand. At that moment, only a salesman and a well-dressed man were in the drugstore. The girl went to the salesman directly. “What do you want?” asked the salesman. “It’s for my little brother,” the girl answered. “He’s really sick and I want to buy a miracle.” “Pardon?” said the salesman.

“My brother Andrew has something bad growing inside his head and my daddy says only a miracle can save him. So how much does a miracle cost?” “We don’t sell a miracle here, child. I’m sorry,” the salesman said with a smile.

“Please! If it isn’t enough, I can try and get some more. Just tell me how much it costs.” said the little girl, almost crying with anxiety.

2 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was somewhere between spring and summer, and my mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then, I was 13 years old, and always felt unhappy with Mom. But I didn’t know that this trip was going to be a special one.

A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose heavenly fragrance(香味)filled the car. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom stopped the car. “What are you doing?” I shouted, fearing that the car had broken down and we’d be trapped there, so far from home. But that wasn’t the case. My mom jumped out of the car, grabbing(抓)the flowers from the back seat. “It’ll just be a minute,” she called back through the open windows.

I impatiently looked at the side of the road before finding a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, a little annoyed, as my mom reappeared ——empty- handed.

Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, “Do you know someone there?” She shook her head. “Then what did you do with the flowers?” She smiled slightly, “I gave them to the receptionist (前台接待员).” “What?” She laughed at my confusion. “I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially those who haven’t gotten any in a while.”

I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we continued our driving, I spoke again, “Did you leave your name?” To this, she answered instantly, “No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me.”

Suddenly, still thinking about Mom’s deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn’t know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by, since we had seen so few people along the way.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Grandma called me in from the yard. “Would you please go to the store for me? I’m ready to bake rolls, and there isn’t enough yeast(酵母). Take a quarter from my little change purse.”

I found Grandma’s purse and put the quarter in my pocket. I was soon in the little general store that served our farming community.

“Mr.Jenkins,”I said,“Grandma needs some yeast.”

Mr.Jenkins set three cakes of yeast on the counter(柜台). His eyes twinkled(眨眼), and he smiled at me. “And what do you need?”

Í knew what he meant. I was always allowed to pick a cent’s candy when I came to the store with Grandma. But Grandma wasn’t here, and she hadn’t said anything about spending a penny.

“How much change do I have from a quarter?” I asked.

“Four cents,” Mr. Jenkins replied. “The yeast is seven cents a cake.”

I thought that over quickly. I would have four cents back. I was sure Grandma wouldn’t care if l spent one cent, and if she were here, she might even say I could have them all. The longer I looked at the candy, the more certain I became that I needed one cent’s worth as a reward for coming to the store alone.

As Mr.Jenkins handed me the candy and three cents, a voice inside me said this was not a really honest thing to do. That wasn’t my money, and I hadn’t asked if I might spend it.However, I put the cents in my pocket and started home, running past Uncle Roy, who was heading in the direction of my home.

“Thank you,” Grandma said when I laid the yeast on the table. “Did you put the change back in my purse?”

“Yes, Grandma,” I replied, hurrying out to the passage(走廊), I hadn’t really lied to Grandma.I argued with myself. I did put back all the change I had.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was in my room, unwilling to head to the community theatre with “my brother” Henry. He was just adopted by my parents recently. I was not in the mood for being onstage with him.

“Kristie, come here,” my mom called. Following her voice, I found her outside the bathroom, holding a wet book. She gave the book a shake. “Henry’s book was in the bathtub. Did you put it there?” She glared at me—something she never did before Henry came to our home. I didn’t wet his book on purpose. Tears of hurt clouded my eyes. Worse still, she promised to buy him a new copy. My heart ached. Henry was stealing my mother’s love. He was ruining my life.

Meanwhile, Henry was just nearby, absorbed in working on a complicated rope knot (绳结) as usual. Why did a boy like him do the girly work? Far from manly!

Soon, it was time to have to set off for the community theatre. As Henry walked ahead of us to the car, my mom took me aside and said in a low voice, “It’s the first time for Henry to be onstage. Be kind to him, Honey.” I nodded but sighed. Being kind didn’t use to be hard. But after Henry moved in, everything felt different. The theatre used to be a special place for my parents and me. With Henry involved, it didn’t seem so special any more.

Finally, it was our stage time. My heart beat wildly. I forgot my annoyance at Henry for a while. As we kids lined up, ready to act out our short play, I realized how loosely I had tied the drawstring (束带) on my skirt. Sure enough, my skirt began to drop. Laughter from the audience could be heard, and even though I was wearing shorts under my skirt, I could feel my face burst into flames. However, my hands were full. If only someone could help me out!

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Class, please line up! Let’s welcome Marti,” said Ms. Baroni, our tae kwon do (跆拳道) teacher.

I was excited that my best friend Marti would be taking lessons, too.

Everyone said, “Hi.” Marti went red in the face.

“You don’t need to be shy here,” I said to Marti in a quiet voice. “Everyone’s really nice.”

After warm-up exercises, Ms. Baroni divided everyone into groups. Even though I was a level above Marti, Ms. Baroni told us to practice together. “Jenna, why don’t you show Marti some basic kicks?”

I said sure and showed her a front kick. Marti copied it. Her kick was as high as my shoulder. “Great job, Marti! Let me show you something,” said Ms. Baroni. She then spent the next five minutes working with Marti. I leaned (倚靠) against the wall and watched Marti copy everything Ms. Baroni did. The more Marti did, the more praise she received from Ms. Baroni.

I practiced my form half-heartedly. “What if Marti became better than me? What if Marti became Ms. Baroni’s favorite student?” I couldn’t help thinking.

“Watch your form!”

“Who is Ms. Baroni speaking to?” I wondered. I turned and saw Ms. Baroni looking directly at me. Nothing could have been worse.

At the end of class, I took my bag and hurried outside to find my mom. I had planned to wait and say good-bye to Marti, but now I wanted to be alone. For the next several weeks, Marti continued to impress our teacher with her skills. Honestly, I felt a little jealous (忌妒的) of her. And as Marti turned into a star student, I became less and less excited about tae kwon do.

One day, as we walked down the hallway at school, Marti said, “Ms. Baroni thinks I’m ready to take the test for the next level.”

I was surprised. “It’s harder than you think. Two judges other than Ms. Baroni will give you points,” I said.

Marti looked disappointed (失望的). “You don’t think I’m good enough to take the test yet?”

A man came home from work late, tired and unhappy, to find his 5—year—old son waiting for him at the door. How the boy wished to have fun with his father at home even for a short time.

“Daddy, may I ask you a question?”

“Yeah sure. what is it?” replied the man.

“Daddy, how much do you make an hour?”

“That’s none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?” the man said angrily.

“I just want to know. Please tell me. How much do you make an hour?” pleaded the little boy.

“If you must know, I make $20 an hour.”

“Oh,” the little boy replied with the head down.

Looking up, he said. “Daddy, may I please borrow $10?

The father was angry. “If the only reason you asked that is that you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard every day for such childish behavior.”

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy’s questions. “How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?” he thought to himself.

After about an hour or so, the man calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn’t ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy’s room and opened the door. “Are you asleep, son?” he asked.

“No, daddy, I’m awake.” replied the boy.

I’ve been thinking. maybe I was too hard on you earlier,” said the man. “It has been a long day and I took out my anger on you. Here’s the $10 you asked for.”

The little boy sat straight up, smiling. “Oh. Thank you, daddy!” he shouted. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled(皱巴巴的)bills.

My father is a practical man. He can’t explain calculus (微积分) , but he can tell you how much pressure boiler needs. He put himself through night school to become an engineer, but that was only after he worked as an electrician and a mechanic.

One day we walked by a toy store window. Sitting in the corner was the most unusual dollhouse (玩具屋) I’d ever seen. It was shaped like an upturned log.

“Oh, Daddy,” I said, “isn’t it beautiful? Do you think Santa Claus will bring it to me?”

Dad looked at the $100 price tag—an exorbitant (过高的) figure in those days. “I think even Santa couldn’t afford this house,” he joked, hiking up his belt as he often does when he’s nervous. “Maybe one day, sweetheart.”

On Christmas morning, I awoke early and raced downstairs. In the dim (昏暗的) light, I made out some wrapped boxes under the tree—but none large enough to contain my dollhouse. Dad could see my disappointment. He pulled me onto his lap and gently told me how, as a boy, he had wanted a red wagon, but his father couldn’t afford one. He said he made his own from wood and old wheels he found. “I’ll make one for you,” Dad promised me.

And right after Christmas, despite all the unfinished projects at home, he started it. I had thought it was an easy toy to make, but every step of the long process was more complex (复杂的) than I had expected. Night after night, Dad would come home from his job dead tired, yet he’d always find time to work on the log house. In the dim light, dad was always busy creating my dollhouse.

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food.

One day, Ali took Zahra’s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a very exciting day for my sister and me. As soon as our dad got home, he was going to give us a special gift. It wasn’t our birthday or anything; our dad had just felt like getting us something special.

The car pulled up, and Dad got out carrying a large bag. He walked up to the door and handed us the bag. Mindy and I looked into the bag together and pulled out the most beautiful red purses we’d ever seen, one for Mindy and one for me.

“I love it!” I said, as I gave my dad a big kiss. Mindy did the same. Mindy always copied me. We had our new purses, but they were empty. Mindy wanted to put something in them — something exciting. So we looked around the house to see what we could find. We couldn’t find much until we walked into our mom and dad’s bedroom. I looked inside one of Dad’s dresser drawers and found what looked like a lot of money.

“Mindy, look what I found!” She came running,“What, what is it?” I pointed inside the drawer. “It’s money. We can stick all this money inside our new red purses.” Mindy looked confused. “That’s mom and dad’s money. We can’t take that.”

I started to put the money into my purse, and Mindy copied me. Our purses were as stuffed as could be. We ran out of our parents’ room and headed for ours. “Let’s hide our purses in our dresser drawer,” I said. As soon as we did this, I heard a loud yell (喊叫). “Honey, our money is missing,” my mother shouted. My dad was frantic (发狂的), and I could hear him pacing downstairs. “I know I put the money in our drawer. Where could it be?”

I heard footsteps coming up the stairs toward our room. Soon, both our parents were standing in front of us.
