1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I never thought that I understood her. She always seemed so far away from me. I loved her, of course. We shared mutual(相互的)love from the day I was born. I came into this world with a head out of shape because of the hard labor my mother had gone through. Family members and friends wrinkled their noses at the disfigured baby I was. But no, not her. Nana thought I was beautiful. Her eyes twinkled with happiness at the ugly baby in her arms. Her first granddaughter. Beautiful, she said.

Before final exams in my junior year of high school, she died. Seven years ago, her doctors diagnosed Nana with Alzheimer’s disease. Seven years ago, our family became experts on this disease as, slowly, we lost her.

She always spoke in broken sentences. As the years passed, the words she spoke became fewer and fewer, until finally she said nothing at all. We were lucky to get one occasional word out of her—beautiful. It was then that our family knew she was near the end.

About a week or so before she died, she lost the abilities for her body to function at all, and the doctors decided to move her to a hospice, where those who entered would never come out.

I told my parents I wanted to see her. I had to see her. My uncontrollable curiosity had taken a step above my nervous and emotional fear.

My mother brought me to the hospice two days after my request. My grandfather and two of my aunts were there as well, but all hung back in the hallway as I entered Nana’s room. She was sitting in a big, soft chair next to her bed, eyes shut, mouth hanging open. The medicine was keeping her asleep. My eyes darted(看)around the room at the windows, the flowers, and the way Nana looked. I was struggling very hard to take it all in, knowing that this would be the last time I ever saw her alive.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Kevin had been eagerly waiting for the holidays to arrive. His mother had kept on hinting that there would be a big surprise for him during the vacation.

Kevin took out his scrapbook (剪贴簿). The exams had just finished, and the summer vacation had just started. Now he was free as a bird — free to draw, paint, play basketball, and watch television ... anything he wanted to do.

Suddenly, the doorbell rang, startling (使惊吓) him.

It was his pain of a cousin, Max. “Hi!” screamed Max as he jumped on Kevin’s bed. “I have come to stay here for the holidays.”

Kevin had never expected his mother’s surprise to be this bad. If this was the start of his vacation, then the next few weeks were going to be the worst experience of his life.

The next few days were horrible for Kevin.

After breakfast, Kevin decided to make a painting. Luckily, Max was not around. Kevin spread out all his art supplies and started painting some beautiful scenery. When he was doing the finishing touches, Max entered the room with a cola bottle. He slipped on some water, spilling cola all over the painting and totally ruining it.

The next day was even worse.

Everything was peaceful until the evening. It all started when Max put the dirty clothes in the washing machine. After some time, Kevin heard some strange sounds from the washing machine. He went to check and found that Max had put his best pair of shoes into the machine, along with the clothes.

One day, Kevin was looking through the newspaper when some interesting news caught his attention. He read it aloud: “The world-famous philatelist (集邮家) Dick Brown’s stamps were stolen last week from his house. Several other stamp robberies also have taken place, and police suspect that all the robberies are linked.”

This piece of news concluded by warning all stamp collectors to keep their stamps safe.

3 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Many years ago, my father, who was 80 at that time, arrived for his regular two-week visit at my home in Karachi. He lived with my elder brother in Lahore most of the time and for ten years had stuck to his habit of going for an hour-long morning walk to keep fit. In Lahore, he would walk around a park that is quite close to my brother’s house. Naturally, he was keen to continue his morning walk while with us in Karachi.

Our preferred park is a 2 km walk from my house and it has a l km walking track. I could not drive him there every day as I had to leave for the office at the same time he wanted to set out. Since there are hardly any footpaths in Karachi, my father said he was delighted to walk on the road as he was certain there wouldn’t be much traffic in the morning.

I was less confident so I suggested it would be safer if he changed his walk time to the evening. That way I could take him to the park after work. However, my father-a determined person-said that he could not change his routine for just a few days and insisted that he would be leaving the house every day at 7 am and returning by 8 am. He started doing this and stuck firmly to his schedule. So one day when he had not returned by 8:30 am, my wife, Qaisa, phoned me in a panic. Worried, I immediately drove home, taking the same route that my father would have taken for his walk.

Not spotting him anywhere, I went to the police station to report my father’s disappearance. The station house officer advised me to wait until midnight before filling the report. Since it was only 10 am, I drove back to the park, in the hope of discovering some trace, but in vain. Totally at a loss for what to do next, I returned home and waited impatiently, walking back and forth in the house.

4 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was eight o'clock on a May morning, and Micah, my 17-year-old daughter, was in our bonus room upstairs. It had been her temporary eleventh-grade classroom ever since schools had moved to remote learning due to the pandemic (疫情).

From the kitchen, I listened for the sound of her tapping on her laptop. I resisted the urge to check on her. Way too often, Micah was texting friends and commenting on their posts about the fun they were having together. We'd barely left the house for 10 weeks straight.

"Mom, everyone is hanging out today!" Micah's voice came from upstairs. "Why can't I?"

I went up the stairs. Micah was lying on the floor wearing pajamas(睡衣), her laptop, school iPad and cell phone in front of her. "It's not fair," she said. I have no one I can be with. I can't wait until I'm 18 and can do what I want."

We'd had this conversation before. Still, I couldn't help but feel sorry for her. I was sick of having to stay at home too. Even though Micah and I were home together more than we had been in years, we might as well have been living in separate worlds. "Wanna watch TV later?" I asked. "No, thanks." Micah shook her head.

"In a few weeks you'll be going to sports camp,'' I added "That's something you can look forward to." I closed the door. I was used to Micah's rejection, but it still hurt. Teenage independence is heathy, but I worried if I didn't find a way to bond with my girl soon, I might never be close with her again. She'd be 18 in the fall and had already convinced herself she didn't need me anymore. Maybe she was right. No matter what I did, I couldn't seem to reach her.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文.

At the end of the class, Mr. Smith announced our assignment for the next Monday was to talk about someone we were grateful to instead of a book report. Upon hearing it, I couldn’t help complaining to Mareya that I was so nervous about having to talk in front of the whole class.

“ Arizona ,you’ve been in at least three plays ,” Mareya pointed out.“ If you don’ t get stage fright in front of those big audiences, why are you bothered by a few kids in our class ?”

It was true, but in a play you were part of a group. I shook my head. Plus, there were so many people I was grateful to. There was no way I could possibly pick just one. Plus, even if I picked one I’ d have no idea what to say. Plus, even if I figured out what to say, I was a million- percent positive I’ d mess up if I tried to say it out loud! I’ d be standing there with everyone staring at me, waiting for words to come out of my mouth.“ Oh , my goodness !” I pulled my sweatshirt hood ( 兜 帽 ) over my face, put my hands over my ears and said,“ I don’t want to talk about it !”

But one thing about really good friends who knew you really well was that they didn’ t always do exactly what you asked them to. Mareya could be pretty pushy talking of being helpful. She scribbled(潦草地写) something on a piece of paper , lifted my hood, and smiled. She’ d drawn a funny elephant (named Franky) with the word BREATHE coming out of its trunk .

“ This is Franky, the ‘everything is going to be all right’ elephant ” Mareya giggled. She held the picture up to her ear and asked, “What’ s that you say, Franky? You think my friend Arizona should come over to my house this weekend so we can work on our talks together?”

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My husband and I had booked a cruise(乘船游览)to celebrate our tenth anniversary. Having worked hard throughout our married lives, we felt like we needed a break and an adventure. As we had expected, while on board, we enjoyed good food and good company, while each stop brought us chances to explore new places and experience new adventures. My husband’s calmness throughout all these new experiences helped me to keep my nerves and fear of new things under control and enjoy myself too.

We were excited as the cruise ship pulled into its final stop, a small port in Mexico, in April 2020. Ryan and I had been zip lining(飞索)before, so when we saw signs for an ecopark boasting 11 lines in the middle of the jungle, we thought, “Let’s go for it.”

We got off the ship at 8 am and had to be back by 5 pm. We travelled through the thick jungle in an old jeep, enjoying the beautiful views and listening to the calls of the animals. By 10.30am, we were admiring the view from a high platform, waiting to cross the deep gorge(峡谷)by zip line-a distance of 700 metres. Ryan went first. It took about a minute for him to cross. Then it was my turn.

I’m petite, at 5ft 3in and 120lb, so wasn’t worried about putting too much weight on the line. I felt safe: I was wearing all the necessary safety equipment. The guide said, “Have fun!” and sent me out.

I was 150 metres up in the air, enjoying the beautiful view of the ocean to the left and the rainforest below. The first I knew that something had gone wrong was a loud bang, then silence. I suddenly realized that the zip line had broken.

Paragraph 1:

I was halfway across the gorge and began falling through the air.

Paragraph 2:

When he reached my tree, I shouted, “Please, baby, catch me if I fall.”

7 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

At dawn, Taylor opened her sleepy eyes and looked out of the window at the foggy field below.   “NO!” she cried, now fully awake. Buttermilk the cow was in Mama's daisy patch (雏菊地).

I must have forgotten to lock the gate last night, Taylor thought as she pulled a sweater over her head. Mama was planning to sell daisy bouquets (花束) at the fair next week, but Buttermilk was eating the flowers.

Taylor hurried outside and grabbed the lead rope on the wall. “Why can't you stay in the field?” she called to Buttermilk as she headed across the yard to the daisy patch.

Buttermilk still stood there chewing flowers. Annoyed, Taylor thought to herself, “When I grew up, I'll be an artist and paint pictures all day. I'll never own a cow. Too much trouble.”

Just as Taylor was about to throw the lead rope onto Buttermilk's collar, the family dog, Red, rounded the corner of the house. Startled, Buttermilk took off, tearing through the daisies and across the yard. She finally ran through the open gate and into the field.

“Thank goodness!” Taylor said as she closed the gate and secured the lock.

She turned to look at the flower garden, where most of the daisies were either eaten or trampled (踩踏).

Mama came out of the house. “What's going on?” she asked. She looked sadly at her garden.

“I forgot to lock the gate,” Taylor said. “I'm so sorry.”

“I know you are.” Mama sighed and gave Taylor a hug. “You learned an important lesson today.”

Taylor's heart was heavy as she went back into the house. She had to think of a way to make it up to her mother.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I had a deadline for a huge project at work. Since my husband was on business, I hurried to buy a rotisserie chicken(烤鸡) for dinner. I figured that would buy me an extra hour to work on my project since I wouldn't have to cook that night.

Now, it was 6:00 pm, and I was typing away, making good progress. My kids were downstairs watching TV. My eleven-year-old son, Nathan, came in and said, "Mom, I'm hungry. Can you warm up the chicken now?"

In a little bit," I answered without looking up from the computer. "I'm trying to work."

Ten minutes later, my older son, Jordan, came in to tell me that he was hungry too, and I needed to warm up the chicken. "I'll do it as soon as I'm at a stopping point," I said.

Fifteen minutes after that, my eighteen-year-old daughter, Julia? made the same request.

I exploded. "You're all old enough to put the rotisserie chicken in the microwave," I nearly shouted. "You guys are watching TV while I'm working on something important. You should just take some responsibility."

Twenty minutes later, a paper plate filled with chicken appeared on the desk next to my computer. I smiled at the kids, "Sorry I yelled at you guys. I'm just so tired of being ATF around here."

ATF?"

All Things Food. It's my responsibility to plan the meals, shop for the food, cook the food, and then clean up the dishes afterward. If it's food-related, it automatically falls to me. I don't want to yell at you guys again, but I'm overwhelmed(压倒的)right now."

Julia nodded, "We understand, Mom. When's your deadline?"

In two days, and I don't know how I'm going to finish." Tears threatened as I thought about how much work I still had to do.

Julia looked at her brothers. "For the next two days, the three of us are ATF. Let's leave Mom alone and go to make a plan."

9 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

“OK, everybody. It's that time of year,” said my science teacher, Mr. Beal. “This Friday we'll have the annual Egg Drop Challenge. Bring your best containers to class. You can work alone or work together.”

Mr. Beal's fifth-grade Egg Drop Challenge was an institution at my school. The goal of the Challenge was simple-you had to build a protective container to keep an egg from breaking when dropped over the stadium wall.

My best friend, Cassie, and I grinned each other. We always worked on projects together. She's brainy; I'm creative. We're the perfect combination, like peanut butter and marshmallow cream, which happens to be my favorite kind of sandwich.

I made my favorite sandwich that afternoon while waiting for Cassie to come over and work on the container. Spreading the fluffy marshmallow cream gave me an idea.

“I have a brilliant design for our egg container!” I said when Cassie arrived. She looked at me eagerly. “We can cushion it with some marshmallow cream. You know, to absorb the shock of the impact,” I explained. “You've got to be kidding, Laura.” Cassie exclaimed. “You have a better idea?” Cassie pointed to a sketch in her notebook. “Actually, I do. We put the egg in a basket with parachute attached. It will simply float to safety.” “It's too easy for something to go wrong. It will never work!” I said. Cassie rolled her eyes, “The parachute is better than that stupid idea.”

I couldn't believe it. Of course we'd had our little fights in the past, but this was different. She'd never called any of my ideas “stupid" before. “Then I'll build mine and you build yours, and we'll just see whose is better.” “Fine!” Cassie threw her notebook into her backpack and stormed out. And just like that, our friendship was broken. Like an egg dropped from the top of a stadium without marshmallow cream to protect it.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Mo was waiting in the corridor outside her class. She was feeling sick. She had two exams that day and physics was first. She really hated physics. It was her worst subject. Terry looked back at her from the front of the line, and then looked away quickly. Mo thought she looked guilty. She didn’t have a problem with physics she didn’t have a problem with anything ... Miss Perfect!

“Hi, Mo, it’s your favorite exam today,” said Nima, laughing as she joined the line. Terry was looking at Mo again. “So, what’s wrong with her?” asked Nima. “I thought you were friends.” “Yes, so did I,” said Mo. “But she hasn’t spoken to me for two weeks now. She promised to help me review for the physics exam too, but then she’s ignored all my calls and texts. She’s forgotten who her friends are!” said Mo angrily. Mr. Reed was talking to the class and the other students were going into the exam room. Mo gave Nima a worried look and followed them.

Mo couldn’t answer question number five. She looked up and saw Terry sitting two rows in front of her. Mo couldn’t believe it! Terry was holding her phone on her knee under the table and reading from it. Is that how Terry always got such good grades? She felt really angry at Terry, but she didn’t know what to do. She thought about telling the teacher, but what would everyone else think of her? “Stop writing and put your pens down.” said Mr. Reed as he started to collect the exam papers. Oh no, Mo hadn’t answered two of the questions. She was going to fail again!

Mo wanted to talk to Terry at lunch time, but she couldn’t find her anywhere. The next exam was history. That was Mo’s favorite subject but she wasn’t feeling good. Mo went to the library to study, but she couldn’t concentrate. She didn’t know what to do about Terry. She thought about telling a teacher, but everyone would hate her if she did that. “It wasn’t fair!” she thought. “Terry was getting good grades by cheating all that time.” thought Mo. Just then, Mr. Reed walked past her table. “Mr. Reed.”

Mo was sitting behind Terry again in the history exam that afternoon. Mo was feeling terrible. Why had she told Mr. Reed? But it was too late now. And anyway, Terry didn’t want to be her friend! Mr. Reed wanted her to look at him and nod if she saw that Terry was cheating in the exam. She was working on the last question when she saw that Terry had her phone under the table.
