Jenny was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she gave a sigh and had to leave. The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?” “Oh, yes, but I don’t have money on me.” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man “Come in.” The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently. “What is it?” asked the man kindly. “Nothing. Actually, I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!” Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?” Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock: she remembered her mother’s familiar face and weathered hands. “Why didn’t I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted. Why haven’t I thanked my mum for what she has done for me?” On the way home. Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

Jim liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp from his dad. He ran to the mailbox with his entry(参赛作品), “Mom will love having a shopping spree,” he thought.
Jim checked the mailbox every day for his prize. Days passed by, and then weeks. Soon it was the day before Mother’s Day. Jim still hadn’t heard anything about the contest.

A Great Monday
Monday started out well. I woke up on time, ate breakfast and did some last minute studying for my math test later that morning. I was confident of getting good grades. I left my house and ten minutes later, I sat with my friends on the school bus. We were busy chatting about how we spent our weekend. At the next stop, a student named Ryan got on the bus. He was in a rush and tripped (绊倒) over someone’s foot. There was a loud noise as he fell to the floor.
Every one of us on the bus laughed. Ryan got up, brushed his jacket and went to an empty seat. He tried to laugh with us, but his face was red with embarrassment. The rest of the morning went by quickly. I did well in my math test. I read two more chapters of To Kill a Mockingbird in English class. Soon we heard the lunch bell. I met my friends from the cheerleading team in the dining hall. I noticed Ryan a few tables away, sitting by himself. He caught me looking at him. I smiled at him quickly and looked away.
When we finished eating, we went to the courtyard to practice a cheer we would do at that night’s football game. After much practice, we finally managed to do the cheer perfectly. We decided to practice it again one last time. Just like the rest of my day so far, the cheer was going great. I raised my leg for one last toe touch. That was when I felt my jeans (牛仔裤) split (裂开) down the middle of my backside.
I froze. I had no idea what to do. I heard people burst out laughing and I saw them pointing at my torn jeans. I tried to cover myself with my hands, I tried to laugh too, but I felt tears begin to well up in my eyes.

“I’m sorry. Do I know you?” Eliza asked.
“I’m sorry, dear, but you remind me of my best friend,” the old woman replied. “She looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like yours.” Eliza listened carefully, with her eyes and mouth wide open. She had heard stories of her grandmother’s best friend and knew the meaning of the scarf. Could this woman be Betty, her grandmother’s childhood friend?

Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city.When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided(碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.
Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead.

“It sometimes changes a good man into a bad one,” said the tall man. “You’ve been under arrest (被捕) for ten minutes, ‘Silky’ Bob. The man from the West unfolded the little piece of paper handed him. His hand was steady when he began to read, but it trembled a little by the time he had finished. The note was rather short.
“Bob: I was at the appointed place on time. When you struck the match to light your cigar I saw it was the face of the man wanted (被通缉的) in Chicago. Somehow I couldn’t do it myself, so I went around and got a plain clothes man to do the job. ——JIMMY.”

From early spring through late autumn, the backyard exploded with colors. On the side of the yard grew a high magnolia tree. Besides being beautiful, it was perfect for climbing, but I didn’t dare to!
I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to get back down, or that I would get stuck high up in the tree. So I never tried. But I wanted to climb up the tree, especially when watching my friends climb it up and overlook the neighborhood. I wanted to conquer the tree and sit on top of the world too. And Grandpa knew it. He tried convincing me and even offered to climb up the tree with me—which always made me laugh! How could my Grandpa with gray hair know how to climb?
One early spring morning, Grandpa was standing in the doorway waiting for me when Grandma and Mom were busy in the kitchen. “Come over here”, he said excitedly, “The tree is blooming lollipops (棒棒糖) instead of flowers! ”
“What?” I exclaimed and ran across to the backyard to see the amazing sight. “No pink magnolia flowers this year,” he said sadly as he shook his head. “But this is the first year ever for our tree to bloom lollipops!” He glanced at me. “Do you think you could climb up the tree—just to the lowest branch—and gather one or two? “Just be careful, Marcy,” her mother warned. “The cliff side is pretty shaky. Be sure to hug the mountain side.” Fifteen minutes later Judy was still watching when suddenly she screamed. “Oh no! She went over the cliff, Momma! The Bronco and Marcy—they went over! We have to help her! Come on!”
Judy took off running. Ruth ran behind her, but Judy was quickly out of sight. Ruth raced down the steep hill, breathing hard. She ran on and on, down the hill, up the next, trying to catch up with her daughter. It was getting harder and harder to see anything at dusk.
Ruth stopped and looked around. She screamed into the darkness, “Judy, where are you?” Off to her immediate right and down the cliff she heard, “Down here, Mother! Don’t come near the edge! I slipped on loose rocks and fell over. I’m down about twenty feet.”
“Oh, dear God, Judy, what can I do?”
“Just stay back, Momma! I think I can crawl(爬) back up. I saw the white roof of the Bronco when I was falling, Momma, and I heard Marcy calling for help. She’s alive! But she’s way down there in the valley. You have to go back to the cabin and phone for help. Tell them to send a helicopter. We have to get Marcy out!!”
Ruth turned around and started running back the hill she’d just ran awkwardly down. Up the hill, down the next. She had one hill left to climb when she fell on her face. Chest pains took her breath away. She started to sob.

Grandpa’s Bee
A long time before I was born, my grandma and grandpa moved into the house on Beechwood Avenue. They had a young family of 4 little girls. On weekend they dug a garden to grow some of their own food.
Everybody worked to keep the garden growing. All summer long, the family ate food from the garden and enjoyed the beautiful flowers. Grandma put up strawberry jam, tomatoes, beans, peppers, pears and peaches in canning jam. They were good to eat through the long winter.
Grandchildren grow up, and grandparents grow older. It became harder for Grandma and Grandpa to keep up the garden. So they made it a little smaller. There was still plenty to eat from the garden and lovely flowers to enjoy.
Then one summer when Grandpa was eighty-nine years old, all he could do was watch from his lawn chair as the vegetables grew and the roses bloomed. Summer slowly faded, and Grandpa died before it was time to bring in the harvest.
It was a lonely winter for Grandma. She sat near the window, looking out at the yard and wondering if she could plant the garden in the spring. It would be hard to care for it by herself. When spring came, she planted only a little garden.
One sunny day in the early summer, Grandma heard a commotion(喧闹) in the front yard and looked out the window to see a frightening sight—a large group of bees filled the air between two tall trees. There was thousands of bees in the air, so many that the group reached the tree-tops! The buzzing sound was disturbing(令人烦恼的). Grandma watched as the bees made their way into a hole up in one of the trees. Before long, every one of those bees had disappeared into its new home.
