文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍一项实验表明,愤怒是人们实现人生中具有挑战性目标的强大动力。

1 . While often seen as a negative (消极的) emotion, anger can also be a powerful motivator (促进因素) for people to achieve challenging goals in their lives, according to research published by the American Psychological Association.

“People often believe that a state of happiness is perfect,” said lead author Heather Lench, PhD, a professor in the department of psychologcal and brain sciences at Texas A & M University, “but previous research suggests that a mix of emotions, including negative emotions like anger, results in good outcomes.”

The functionalist theory of emotion suggests that all emotions, good or bad, are reactions to events within a person’s environment and help that person to make proper actions, according to Lench. For example, sadness may suggest that a person needs to seek help or emotional support, while anger may indicate a person needs to take action to overcome an obstacle (障碍).

To better understand the role of anger in achieving goals, researchers conducted a series of experiments involving more than 1,000 participants and analyzed survey data from more than 1,400 respondents. In each experiment, participants either had an emotional response (such as anger, amusement, desire or sadness) or a neutral (中性的) emotional state, and then were presented with a challenging goal. Across all the experiments, anger improved people’s ability to reach their goals compared with a neutral condition in a variety of challenging situations.

“Our research adds to the growing evidence that a mix of positive and negative emotions promotes well-being, and that using negative emotions as tools can be particularly effective in some situations,” Lench said.

1. What is commonly believed concerning people’s emotions?
A.It is believed that a state of joy is great.
B.A feeling of sadness leads to poor effect.
C.Anger is actually a positive emotion.
D.Pride acts as an obstacle to success.
2. Why did researchers do a seres of experiments?
A.They hoped to overturn the previous findings.
B.They hoped to prove that a state of happiness is ideal.
C.They hoped to find the relationship between positive and negative emotions.
D.They hoped to have a better understanding of the role of anger in attaining goals.
3. What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The problem of the research.B.The background of the research.
C.The process of the research.D.The significance of the research.
4. What’s Lench’s attitude to their research?
A.Skeptical.B.Favorable.C.Uncaring.D.Critical.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讨论生活中人们感到身心疲惫和真正懒惰之间的区别。

2 . Are you someone who easily gets tired and doesn’t feel like doing anything? Do you label this kind of behavior as mere laziness?     1

Feel disconnected from everything.

People experiencing exhaustion most commonly don’t feel like themselves anymore, don’t feel engaged by anything and constantly struggle with the sense of helplessness and inability to take back control of their lives.

Used to be motivated and passionate.

A clear difference between someone who’s worn out and someone who’s lazy is that the tired people used to have things they were passionate about.     2     And even hate doing anything because of how much they overworked themselves.

Become moody and annoyed.

Do you suddenly find yourself easily angry?     3     If you start to have trouble controlling your emotions, especially when it never used to be a problem for you, this might be the reason why.

    4

One of the warning signs is that you start neglecting your self-care and socially keep away from others. You stop making an effort to dress up yourself or look good and you tend to spend most of your time by yourself doing nothing.

Changes happen gradually.

Studies show that exhaustion develops in five major stages, according to degrees of severity. The honeymoon phase, the onset of stress, chronic stress, exhaustion and habitual exhaustion. By the time you reach the final stage, exhaustion will make you suffer from depression and anxiety.     5

A.Ignore your self-care.
B.Focus on warning signs.
C.Do you often feel emotionally out of control?
D.So it’s important to raise awareness about exhaustion.
E.But the lazy people don’t ever devote themselves to things.
F.However, they may now be struggling to find interest in anything.
G.Here are five signs to show you’re experiencing exhaustion rather than laziness.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述的是在疫情期间,在Montclair 的一位母亲Peralte发起一项名为“旅行日记”的活动,吸引了很多女性参加。

4 . Kyra Peralte thought keeping a diary during the pandemic (流行病) might help her sort out her feelings. In April 2020, the mother of two in Montclair, New Jersey, now 46, started writing about the challenges of work, marriage and motherhood during a global crisis. She invited women from near and far to fill the notebook with their own pandemic tales. She named the project The Traveling Diary.

Peralte created a website for people to add their names to the queue. Each person gets to keep the diary for three days and fill as many pages as she wishes. Then she is responsible for mailing it to the next person, whose address Peralte provides. So far, more than 2, 000 women from 30 countries have joined in.

The diary reached Colleen Martin in Florham Park, New Jersey, in November 2020. “I had just recently lost my brother. By the time I actually got it and wrote in it, it was much more of a relief,” she says. Martin shipped off the diary to the next person, and Dior Sarr, 35, received it at her home in Toronto just before the new year. “I wrote about my ambitions(抱负), my goals and how I wanted to step into the new year, ” she says, “It felt meaningful to pass on something so personal. It felt like these were women that I had known even though I didn’t know them at all.”

Like many of the women who wrote in her diary, Peralte feels a strong bond with the people who filled its pages, none of whom she would have otherwise known. Her idea, Peralte says, has had a great effect on her and, she hopes, the other women who were part of it.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了四种管理消极想法的策略。

5 . Most of us spend a lot of time inside our own mind—worrying about the future and focusing on the parts of life that leave us dissatisfied. Although they are common, negative or unwanted thoughts can prevent you from enjoying experiences, distract you from focusing on what’s important, and drain your energy.     1     The good news is that with practice, you can replace negative thinking patterns with helpful thoughts. Try these four ways to manage your negative thoughts:

2     Our minds may convince us of something that isn’t really true. These misleading thoughts intensify negative thinking. If you can recognize them, you can learn to challenge them.

Take a break from negative thoughts. It is possible to learn how to separate from negative thoughts.     3     Then take a break from focusing on them and move on with your day.

Release judgment. We all judge ourselves and others, usually unconsciously. Constantly doing those leads to dissatisfaction. Be able to let go of judgment, and you will feel more relieved. Some ways to decrease judgmental thoughts include recognizing your own reaction, observing it, and then letting it go. Another helpful technique is to “positive judge.”     4

Focus on your strengths.     5     If you find yourself trapped with negativity, take a moment to smile and think about something you like about yourself.

A.They can also make you feel anxious and depressed.
B.The more you can focus on your strengths, the easier it will be to feel positive about yourself.
C.Recognize inaccurate thoughts.
D.Always give others positive comments.
E.When noticing you are negatively judging a person or yourself, observe positive qualities, too.
F.One way to do this is to allow yourself a certain amount of time with the thoughts.
G.Taking a break from negative thoughts is a little difficult.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was in 7th grade when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was very sudden and unexpected for our family and obviously I was beaten. I tried my best to balance my first year of middle school and my home life, even if I knew this was impossible. I hated coming home from school every day for fear of what I would see when I got home. I hated seeing my mom sick all the time; she was not herself and all I wanted was for her to stop treatment and get better. Luckily, I had lots of support from my family, friends, and teachers during this hard time to help get me through it.

At the beginning of the year, I was determined to stay on track with my homework and studying and get through my first year at middle school successfully. Slowly, I started to become more distracted while at home with taking care of my mom, cleaning the house and helping my grandma cook our meals. While I was at school, I could escape and put my mom’s sickness in the back of my mind while I hung out with my friends and enjoyed playing. I noticed that my quiz and test grades were increasingly getting worse, but I never brought this to the attention of my mom because I did not want to worry her. Eventually, all of my grades were lower than C’s.

I knew that I was not doing well at school, and I needed to get my grades back up. I knew that a lot of my teachers were cutting me some unimportant work because they knew what was happening at home. Ms. Zazoski, my English teacher was the most supportive teacher that I have ever had and I am so glad that I was in her class that year.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要讲述了拖延在工作和生活中会造成的不好的后果;拖延并不是因为懒惰,它是心态的问题。

7 . Procrastination is the act of putting off tasks until the last minute, or past their deadline.

For many students, getting a task that is due in two months is a great thing. They have two months to slowly work on the task, making necessary improvements all along the way.     1     Some students plan to get to work on that task, but they never get around to it. Then, the due date rolls around and those students have to work all night to meet the deadline the next morning.

2     Many jobs are lost because a worker did not get to the work in time. Deadlines are missed because a business plan wasn’t given enough consideration early on. These things cost businesses large amounts of money in lost productivity.

What is at the root of all of this procrastination? Some might say that it is laziness, but it is really just a problem with mindset (心态).     3

It is difficult to stop this terrible habit.     4     By doing that, you would be changing the way your mind processes work. As a hypnotherapist (催眠师), I have used hypnosis to stop people from smoking and keep them away from stress. I find that it is an effective solution for procrastination as well.

5     They think that it is just like the dull shows on television. That’s not what hypnosis is about, though. Hypnosis is really about changing a person’s basic senses so that their thinking is changed. This sounds like a perfect way to deal with procrastination, doesn’t it?

A.That is how it is supposed to be done.
B.For many people, it has become a habit.
C.It takes a long time to truly change your ways.
D.Procrastination is a problem that usually affects students.
E.Procrastination can be found in the working world as well.
F.If it does, you probably have a problem with procrastination.
G.Many people don’t even consider hypnosis as a treatment option.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。从三个方面就如何应对紧张焦虑提供一些建议。

8 . Everyone feels anxious or nervous at times. Feelings like these can surface when you face a challenge.     1     You might feel anxious when it’s your turn to speak in class. These feelings can be uncomfortable, but you can manage with the help of the following tips.

●Start with a growth mindset (思想倾向).

Some people have a fixed mindset. They might think, “This is how I am. I get anxious before speaking in class. So I don’t raise my hand.” With a fixed mindset, people don’t think things can change. But people with a growth mindset know they can get better at just about everything — with effort and practice.     2

●Notice what anxiety feels like for you.

Get to know the body feelings that are part of anxiety. When you’re anxious, do you feel “butterflies”? Shaky hands? A faster heartbeat? Know that these feelings are part of the body’s normal response to a challenge.     3     Next time they happen, try to notice the feelings without getting upset. Accept them and let them be there.

    4

When you’re anxious, it’s common to tell yourself things like, “I can’t do this.” Or “What if I mess this up?” Instead, tell yourself something that could help you face the moment with a bit of courage, “It’s OK to feel anxious. I can do this anyway.” It’s facing the anxiety that helps you manage it. This is called exposure.

Learning to cope with anxiety takes time and patience. Most of all, it takes practice and willingness to face it. It starts with one small step.     5

A.Give it all of your attention.
B.That includes dealing with anxiety.
C.Talk yourself through anxiety and face it.
D.They’re not harmful and they fade on their own.
E.It can help you “reset” and be ready to move forward.
F.For example, you might feel nervous before taking big exams.
G.The more you practice, the better you’ll get at managing anxiety.

10 . Everyone has their own way of dealing with heartbreak. Some turn to friends for support, some turn to TV streaming services and some turn to ice cream and sweets. But what if you could check yourself into a retreat for a long weekend of “therapy (心理治疗)” as well as scenic views, all with the purpose of healing your broken heart?

The Heartbreak Hotel, run by counseling psychologist Alice Haddon, is offering just that. Launched in late 2021, the residential retreats, specifically designed for women, are held at Barsham Barns, a private home located on the coast of UK county Norfolk.

The Heartbreak Hotel was dreamed up by Haddon, who had taken a break after the death of her mother, and found herself rethinking the way that therapy is conducted traditionally. Through her personal experience, Haddon realized that there were few services available for women struggling to overcome different types of heartbreak. She began exploring the possibility of a new concept in therapy that could provide what women really needed.

With her friends on board, Haddon put together the hotel with an all-female team. “This space is really a recovery and self-discovery away from the heartbreak and towards a fresh start.”

“We have a specialist working on helping our guests who need professional support,” Haddon adds. “We also encourage our guests with similar experiences to sit together and talk, which we call a group therapy session.”

Aside from that, those who check in to The Heartbreak Hotel will also benefit from a menu of plant-based, heart-healing nutritious and delicious meals, as well as fireside gatherings and walks along some of Norfolk’s beautiful beaches.

According to Haddon, every guest may hold a different story.
