7 . What are your favorite stories you learned as a child? What stories do you hope your loved ones will tell about you when you aren’t around?
Storytellers were once known as “liars”. This was not to say their stories weren’t true. But they were often exaggerated in colorful ways that brought a story to life.
I grew up in a family of “liars”. They all told stories. And I grew up to earn my living by writing stories. The stories I write about my family are always true. But I can’t always be sure of every detail, so I rely on imagination to fill in the gaps.
My grandmother’s stories changed a bit each time she told them, and I smiled at how her changes made a story better. I loved hearing her stories. And my grandchildren seem to love hearing mine.
“Tell it again, Nana!” they say. I do, and they start laughing before I get to the funny part. Recently, they begged to hear a Halloween story I’ve told countless times. Here it is:
Once upon a time, when I was 10, my mother told me to make costumes (服装) and take my brothers to go trick-or-treating. Denton was 4. He looked like a monkey. Joe was 6 and totally blind. I threw a sheet over his head but forgot to tell him he was a ghost (鬼).
We knocked on the first door and waited. The door flew open, and we all shouted, “Trick-or-treat!” Mrs. Fisher patted Joe’s head through the sheet and said, “What a cute little ghost!”
And Joe yelled (叫喊), “I am not a ghost!”
True story. My grandchildren love it. They beg me to tell it again and again.
I hope to tell them more stories as they grow older. I want them to remember me and the big, crazy family I grew up in. Stories are the unbreakable threads that bind generations together, tell us who we are and give us hope.
My grandchildren have never met their “Great Uncle Joe”, but they won’t soon forget him. To them, he will always be, not a ghost, but very lovable.

8 . My mom and my grandpa have been making jam(果酱)every summer for more than 20 years. The jam is sweet ,made from local Okanagan fruit. Not only is it delicious but it also helps me remember my childhood. As kids, we traveled to Salmon Arm, B. C. ,every summer to spend it with my grandpa and grandma. Memories of house-boating, fishing, countless hours in the lake, and of course jam-making remain in all our hearts.
We were never part of making jam, but I remember watching my mom and grandpa carry in fresh berries from the car, and then measure and cook. Only breaking to sleep and eat, they would show up two days later tired, sometimes covered with burns, and proud faces. Although at that time I couldn't tell you how the jam was made, I knew that each jar(瓶)was made with love and care. They never sold the jam at any local markets; they kept some for themselves and the rest was given away to friends and family.
One summer, for some reason, they weren't able to make jam. I remember my mom being really sad and I didn't understand till some years later that making jam with her dad wasn't really about the jam at all. It was an occasion (场合),where she had his undivided attention and he, hers. I don't know what they talked about for all those hours, or if they even talked at all, but any silence was filled with feelings of love and happiness.
Now in my mid-30s, my brother, sister and I have our own children to bring to Salmon Arm every summer, it only for a few days. Much has changed but one thing that has not is the jam. Mom and Grandpa disappear for a couple of days to make it. I feel joy watching my mom and grandpa share this time together. It's a tradition that one day my mom will carry forward with me, and many years from now, I will carry forward with my daughter.

9 . I was sitting at my kitchen table the other day with a pen, notebook, calculator and a pile of bills. I was doing my monthly budget. There were bills for electric water, rent, insurance, the car payment, the phone bill, and the cable bill. Plus money needed to be set aside for food, gas, clothes and hopefully a little left over to save for those unexpected bills that always seemed to show up. When I was done, I shook my head, closed my eyes and thought of a time long ago when I would regularly get treasures.
When I was a boy, we lived across the road from Camp Caesar. It held week long camps all through the summer and my grandma who I lovingly called “Nanny” worked in her big kitchen. I remember slipping there getting a smile, a hug, a kiss and a hot roll from Nanny. Then she would always take deep in her pockets and pull out a treasure, a shiny quarter. She would give it to me and I would run down the hill to either get an ice cold can of coke from the pop machine or I would head to the camp’s swimming pool where I could buy a warm cup of cherry coke for 15 cents and a tiny 10 cent bag of chips from a stand. I took my time because it was always a big decision. It was nice too feeling so rich for a few minutes.
Looking back now I can see that the real treasure was not the quarter at all. It was the love with which Nanny gave it to me. I would have still visited her at work every day if I had never gotten a single quarter. It was her smile, hugs, and kisses that were priceless in my heart then and now.
The old saying is true, “With your work you can make a living, but it is with your love that you make a life.” You can always welcome love into your heart, soul and mind. And you can always share your love with others. It is that one treasure that lasts forever.
