1 . One day I went to a store to get some needed items for my family.

I gathered up my goodies and headed for the checkout counter, only to be blocked in the narrow aisle (通道) by a young man who appeared to be about sixteen years old. I wasn’t in a hurry, so I patiently waited for the boy to realize that I was there. It was obvious now, he was mentally challenged and a little shocked as he turned and saw me standing so close to him, waiting to squeeze by. I said, "Hey Buddy, what's your name?"

“My name is Denny and I’m shopping with my Mommy,” he responded proudly.

"Wow.” I said, “that's a cool name; I wish my name was Denny, but my name is Steve. How old are you Denny?

“How old am I now, Mommy?” he asked his mother as she slowly came over from the next aisle. “You're fifteen years old, Denny”. Then he headed toward the toy section.

Denny’s mom thanked me for taking the time to talk with her son. She told me that most people wouldn’t even look at him, much less talk to him.

I told her that it was my pleasure and that there are plenty of red, yellow, and pink roses in God’s Garden; however, “Blue Roses” are very rare and should be appreciated for their beauty and distinctiveness.

You see. Denny is a Blue Rose and if someone doesn't stop and smell that rose with their heart and touch that rose with their kindness, then they’ve missed a blessing from God. So, the next time you see a BLUE ROSE, don’t turn your head and walk off. Take the time to smile and say Hello.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

Our house has been noisier since my new stepsister and stepmother — Jen and Mom — moved in. I called her Mom, but the word made me feel uncomfortable, like wearing a pair of shoes that pinched (夹脚). I didn’t remember my own mother; she died in an accident when I was a baby. It had always been just Dad and me. But so much changed. Sometimes I wished I had magic to change it back.

I heard Dad’s footsteps upstairs. “Do you want to take Jen skating?” he asked.

“I guess so.” I sighed, thinking about how Dad and I usually spent the weekends going fishing. That was my favorite activity. But this year, Dad was too busy helping Mom cook.

“Thanks,” Dad said and put his arm around my shoulders. “We’ll make a snowman later,” he promised.

“Yeah,” I agreed, not too sure we’d have time.

Mom handed us some homemade cookies with a smiling face as we grabbed our skates. I had to admit Mom came up with good ideas sometimes. Even though I liked that, I still couldn’t help but feel as if she were changing everything.

“No, thanks, I’m not hungry.” I said. “Ready?” I asked Jen. She nodded, and we headed out the front door.

The snow crunched (嘎吱作响) under our boots as we walked down the street. The silence was awkward. “Did you go skating a lot last year?” I asked, blurting out (脱口而出) the first thing that came to my mind.

Jen shook her head and looked at me. Finally she said, “On the weekends, Mom and I always went to visit some friends on a farm. I especially loved seeing the cute rabbits.”

Before that, I’d never even thought about how Jen may be feeling. She not only had a new stepfather and stepbrother, but also had a new town and home. Jen used to live near a lake, but had to move to the north with us. She had more changes than me.

4 . There is no misery so constant, so upsetting, and so intolerable to others, as that of having a character which is your master. There are corners at every turn in life, against which we may run, and at which we may break out in impatience, if we choose.

Look at Roger Sherman, who rose from a humble occupation to a seat in the first Congress of the United States, and whose judgment was received with great respect by that body of distinguished men. He made himself master of his temper and cultivated it as a great business in life. There are one or two instances which show this part of his character in a light that is beautiful.

One day, after having received his highest honors, he was sitting and reading in his sitting room. A student, in a room close by, held a looking-glass in such a position as to pour the reflected rays of the sun directly in Mr. Sherman’s face. He moved his chair, and the thing was repeated. A third time the chair was moved, but the looking-glass still reflected the sun in his eyes. He laid aside his book, went to the window, and many witnesses of the rude behavior expected to see the ungentlemanly student severely punished. He raised the window gently, and then --- shut the window blind!

I cannot help providing another instance of the power he had acquired over himself. He was naturally possessed of strong passions, but over these he finally obtained an extraordinary control. He became habitually calm and self-possessed. Mr. Sherman was one of those men who are not ashamed to maintain the forms of religion in their families. One morning he called all together as usual to lead them in prayer to God. The “old family Bible” was brought out and laid on the table.

Mr. Sherman took his seat and placed beside him one of his children, a child of his old age. The rest of the family were seated around the room, several of whom were now grown-ups. Besides these, some of the tutors of the college were boarders in the family and were present at the time. His aged mother occupied a corner of the room, opposite the place where the distinguished Judge sat.

At last, he opened the Bible and began to read. The child who was seated beside him made some little disturbance, upon which Mr. Sherman paused and told it to be still. Again he continued but again he had to pause to scold the little offender, whose playful character would scarcely permit it to be still. At this time he gently tapped its ear. The blow, if blow it might be called, caught the attention of his aged mother, who now with some effort rose from the seat and tottered across the room. At last, she reached the chair of Mr. Sherman, and in a moment, most unexpectedly to him, she gave him a blow on the ear with all the force she could gather. “There,” said she, “you strike your child, and I strike mine.”

For a moment, the blood was seen mounting to the face of Mr. Sherman. But it was only for a moment and all was calm and mild as usual. He paused; he raised his glasses; he cast his eye upon his mother; again it fell upon the book from which he had been reading. Not a word escaped him; but again he calmly pursued the service, and soon sought in prayer an ability to set an example before his household which should be worthy of their imitation. Such a victory was worth more than the proudest one ever achieved on the field of battle.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A little girl whose parents had died lived with her grandmother and slept in an upstairs bedroom. One night there was a fire in the house and the grandmother died while trying to rescue the child. The fire spread quickly, and the situation was terrible.

Neighbours called the fire department, then stood helplessly by, unable to enter the house because flames blocked all the entrances. The little girl appeared at an upstairs window, crying for help, just as word spread among the crowd that the fire- fighters would be delayed a few minutes because they were all at another fire.

Suddenly, a man appeared with a ladder, put it up against the side of the house and disappeared inside. When he reappeared, he had the little girl in his arms. He delivered the child to the waiting arms below, then disappeared into the night.

An investigation revealed that the child had no living relatives, and weeks later a meeting was held in the town hall to determine who would take the child into their home and bring her up.

A teacher said she would like to raise the child. She pointed out that she could ensure her a good education. A farmer offered her an upbringing (教养) on his farm. He pointed out that living on a farm was healthy and satisfying. Others spoke, giving their reasons why it was to the child's advantage to live with them.

Finally, the town's richest resident rose and said, “I can give this child all the advantages that you have mentioned here, plus money and everything that money can buy.”

Throughout all this, the child remained silent, her eyes on the floor.

“Does anyone else want to speak?” asked the meeting chairman. A man came forward from the back of the hall. He walked slowly and appeared to be in pain.

My wife and the children and I moved from our rural home in Virginia so that I could be retrained for a new career. It meant that we must leave our best friend behind, Zachary, a six-year-old black dog. This was for his good because if he continued to stay with us, he would be miserably chained up in suburban Birmingham while we were away from home every day.We all agreed that he should remain free and explore the countryside. We found friends of friends, far across the county, over a mountain, beyond the highway to help raise him. They would be glad to give him a new home.He trembled beside me as I drove him there. And I left him tearfully, watching him standing at his new house’s door, disappearing in the distance of the rear view mirror (后视镜) as I drove away from him forever.

A year later, in our new home, we got a call from the people who bought our farmhouse and my wife took the phone. She was told that there was a strange black dog appearing there several days ago.The dog was right thin and his paws didn’t look so good.He just seemed sort of lost and confused. Our former neighbors down the road recognized that he was our old dog.

Hanging up the phone, my wife turned to me with tears of joy and regret, saying anxiously, “It must be Zachary and he found his way home. He’s looking for us.Fred, you have to go and get him.” “Yes, I will”, I comforted my wife. The next day, driven by forces beyond reason, my daughter and I drove ten hours to our old farmhouse, near which we found our best friend.Yes, it was Zachary for sure, though thinner than we had left.

10 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was January 24th. I had finally completed my last radiation treatment. It had been a long journey—eight months in total since my initial diagnosis of breast cancer—and I had been looking forward to this day for a very long time. My husband Casey, who was wearing a pink ribbon on his jacket, was waiting for me in the lobby at Sunnybrook hospital in Toronto. As a symbol to raise people’s awareness of breast cancer, the pink ribbon had become a part of our life. On the way back home, we reflected on the past months and discussed what lay ahead for our family.

We arrived home in time to have dinner with our three children—Tyler, elven, Brady, nine, and Eve, six. The kids greeted me with hugs that I think were a little bit tighter and lasted a little bit longer than usual.

We were heading to the skating rink (溜冰场) that night. My son Brady had a hockey game and if his Tiger team won, they would move onto the next round. As a typical Canadian hockey mom, I had always loved going to the rink to watch my kids play. But since my diagnosis, the rink and the Tiger players had come to mean even more to me: it was my happy time in those painful months.

When we arrived at the rink, we were greeted with warm hellos. You could tell it was a big game as there was a large crowd of Tiger parents gathering in the lobby outside the dressing room. About ten minutes before game time, Brady’s coach came out to the lobby and invited all the parents to come into the dressing room.
