1 . Friendship needs care and attention to keep it in good health. Here are five ways to sustain (保持) long-distance friendships.
·Set a regular dateLong-lasting friendships share the characteristic that both sides equally contact (联系) and share with one another. With busy schedules, squeezing in phone calls can be a challenge.
Make sure you have communicated with your friend about how frequently each of you wants to be contacted and what method works best for you both.
Anniversaries and birthdays carry even more weight in long-distance friendships. Although technology might make day-to-day communication possible, extra effort goes a long way on special days. Simply keeping a diary that keeps track of friends’ birthdays and other important dates will make sure nothing slips by you.
·Don’t rely on technology aloneA.Remember important dates |
B.Compensate by writing letters |
C.It is also helpful for you to be a friendship keeper |
D.Try to find a time that works for both of you and stick to it |
E.Friends need to talk about their preferred methods of communication |
F.It is easy to have a sense of connectedness through social media |
G.You may be the friend who left or the one who was left behind |
A.Mr. Jones is busy now. |
B.Mr. Smith has taken over Mr. Jones's work. |
C.The man mistook Mr. Smith for Mr. Jones. |
3 . We may think that communication is as simple as our words. This is not the case. The fact is that we receive far more information than what we say.
Let people see your hands.

We all can work on these things above. But the receiver of our message is the judge. Their perception (感知)of our body language rules the day. When we apply the ideas above, we will increase the chances that their perception is positive.

4 . Mark, a professor at Stanford University, published a paper named The Strength of Weak Ties. Until then scholars had agreed that a person’s happiness depended mainly on the quality of relationships with close friends and family.
Weak ties or strong ones, which are more important?
One way to think about any person’s social world is that you have an inner circle of people whom you often talk to and feel close, and an outer circle of people whom you see infrequently or just for a short time. Mark named these “strong ties” and “weak ties”.
Someone people knew may bring more opportunities.
Mark studied 282 Boston-based workers and found that most of them got their jobs through someone they knew.
Sandstrom, a senior lecturer in psychology, found that people with larger networks of weak ties tended to be happier in general, and that on days when a participant had a greater number of casual interactions(互动) with weak ties — a neighbour, a member of yoga class — they experienced more happiness.
When do weak-tie interactions happen?
A.Mark showed that quantity(数量) matters, too |
B.Only the people with strong ties can feel it |
C.Weak-tie interactions happen when we are out |
D.People get happiness from weak-tie relationships |
E.Mark even went to interview these people in person |
F.But only a minority got the job through a close friend |
G.He stressed weak ties are more important to us than strong ones |
A.Friends. | B.Salesman and customer. | C.Boss and employee. |
6 . The world is designed for right-handed people, but why does a tenth of the population prefer the left?
The answer to it remains a bit of a mystery. Since scientists have noticed that left-handedness tends to run in families, it’s assumed that left-handedness has a genetic(基因的) component to it.
Historically, the left side and left-handedness have been considered a negative thing by many cultures.
A.In other words, left-handers are born that way. |
B.Left-handedness used to be regarded as a disability. |
C.The unfavorable associations of the use of the left hand among cultures are varied. |
D.Why do they prefer to use their left hand rather than their right hand for routine activities? |
E.Why do some parents force their left-handed children to become right-handed when writing? |
F.In Ghana, pointing, gesturing, giving or receiving items with the left hand is considered rude. |
G.Fortunately, nowadays most societies and cultures no longer reject left-handedness like before. |
7 . You may not realize it, but you are doing more than just studying when you are at school. The school is also the place where you learn how to get along well with others.
If you discover that you have problems getting along with your classmates or friends, the most important thing to learn is tolerance(宽容).
You need to remember an old saying, “Treat others how you want to be treated.” You would like to be treated kindly by your classmates, so it is important to treat them kindly too. If you tolerate something, it does not mean that you have to like it. No one is asking you to change who you are or what you believe in.
It is important to practice tolerance because it will make everyone’s life easier.
A.Learn to accept people for their different abilities and interests. |
B.Tolerance will make everyone get on better with each other. |
C.So it is important to learn to get on well with others. |
D.Tolerance is the ability to realize and respect the differences in others. |
E.Tolerance is a useful tool in everyday communication. |
F.But this is not always easy. |
G.Tolerance just means that you should respect the differences in others and not try to make them change. |
