3 . It was a cold winter night and I was sleeping in my warm and cosy bed. My cousins had come to stay with me at my house. The sound of thunder could be heard in the distance, but getting closer by each passing minute.
I woke up and saw that my cousins were not sleeping in the spare beds in my room. They were gone! I had a thousand questions in my mind, “Where were they? Had someone kidnapped (绑架) them?”
This filled me with fear. I wondered if I should go and tell my parents, then I decided to check downstairs first to see if they were playing tricks with me or trying to pull my leg. I stepped out of the room and decided to go downstairs to investigate.
When I stepped on the top step, I slipped and rolled down the stairs like a ball. It was the most miserable experience rolling down the stairs! My legs were hurting and I had a bump (肿块) on my forehead.
When I entered the living room, the electricity went off, and because I couldn’t see anything, I accidentally bumped into the wall. This made me feel dizzy. When I looked beside me, I saw a figure but couldn’t make out what it was. The figure started to move here and there, and then I heard strange and frightening sounds.
I glanced back towards the direction of the figure, but there was no sign of it this time. This made me frightened. Again I could hear someone talking and jumping in the room. I stayed rooted where I was.
Suddenly the TV switched on by itself. I was totally scared now. Then I felt as if someone was patting my shoulder. I hurried in the direction of the electricity switch and turned it on. Suddenly a person appeared in front of me and turned off the lights. I froze with fright for a moment but managed to get enough courage to move away, only to trip over a rope.

“Ellie! Ellie! I can’t till your birthday, so here! Open it” 11-year-old Alana shouted on afternoon. She had brought her elder sister Ellie a gift-wrapped box a week before her birthday.
Ellie accepted the box with a smile. However, she asked her sister for help because her arms were too weak that day.
Ellie had cerebral palsy (脑瘫), and she was in a wheelchair. Sometimes, her arms and legs were too weak.
Alana helped her sister with the wrapping, showing a beautiful new Barbie that 12-year-old Ellie looked at closely. Suddenly, her eyes watered, and Alana hugged her tightly, thinking she was happy to receive the gift.
“Isn’t it cool? I saved all my pocket money for it,” Alana proudly said, holding her sister close.
“It’s just… she’s pretty, not like me! I’ll never look like that!” Ellie cried some more.
This was not uncommon. Ellie often cried over not looking like other girls, including her little sister, who was tall and getting more beautiful each day. Her family tried their best to comfort her as she complained about her situation.
“Ellie, think about Natalie. She’s the most beautiful girl ever, and she’s in a wheelchair, just like you!” Alana reminded her.
Natalie was an older girl in their local high school who worked as a model. She had been disabled at a young age, but was now an inspiration to their town.
Ellie and Alana loved Natalie. She was their idol, and their parents had even printed a few pictures off her Instagram so the girls could stick them on their walls.
“You’re right. I must think of Natalie and what she would say in this situation. What do you think she would say?” Ellie asked her little sister. “I think Natalie would encourage us to play with whatever dolls we wanted,” Alana said happily, making Ellie laugh. The tears stopped, and they went to Ellie’s room to play with their Barbies.
A week later, it was finally Elle’s birthday, and she received many amazing gifts. Many people and friends showed up.

Jack’s grandmother’s birthday was around the corner and all the family members were busy preparing a big party for her. It would be a special birthday party, because Grandma Sophie would turn 100 years old on the birthday. The family was filled with atmosphere of mystery and kind of excitement. Everyone was busy doing something secretly. Jack’s sister was knitting (编织) a woolen scarf for Grandma Sophie. She even brought the threads and weaving sticks to school and knitted between the class intervals. Jack’s brother would play the guitar of Grandma Sophie’s favorite song at the birthday party, so he practiced playing whenever he was free. And Jack’s parents were decorating the house and doing shopping.
However, little Jack, the 8-year-old boy, sitting with his favorite toy dinosaur, looked unhappy. He wanted to engage in the big event and to make his grandma happy, but he had no idea. He couldn’t knit as his sister did, nor could he play any musical instrument as his brother did. A birthday card with beautiful pictures would be a good choice. But he had no money to buy a card. What he possessed were lots of cards, which were from families and relatives for his birthday or Christmas and New Year. So little Jack turned to his mother for help.
Jack’s cards came from his friends and relatives all over the country. There were funny cards and serious cards. Some cards had beautiful pictures. Others had silly drawings. Jack saved them all. But his favorite card was from his grandma.
“Why don’t you recycle some of your old birthday and Christmas cards?” Jack’s mother suggested. “What does that mean?” asked Jack. “Recycle means’ to use again’,” said Jack’s mother. “You can create something new from things that have already been used.” “Recycling is a good idea,” said Jack. “I know. I’ll cut out pictures and poems from my old cards. Then I’ll make a big, new card to send to Grandma.”
