1 . When I saw the documentary ADHD (多动症): Not Just for Kids, I was in tears after 20 minutes — the stories being told sounded much like my own. I’m in my 40s, I had read everything there was in health and science and I had no idea that the symptoms (症状) I had experienced all of my life were anything but normal. How had I missed this? I called the doctor to get assessed. I must have sounded desperate on the phone; they took me right away.
Later, I researched everything I could about ADHD. It became clear that my misunderstanding and ignorance about the disorder had misled me. A million thoughts, a million regrets. Finally, I told myself I couldn’t change the past, but I could share the fact that ADHD can look much different from the super active child practicing back flips (后空翻) off of a chair.
As for me, things went another way around: I was a young girl, quietly sitting at my school desk, pretending to listen to the teacher. Meanwhile, I was watching and drawing the bird that landed in the tree outside. And I was rereading entire chapters of my textbooks and taking extensive notes because I couldn’t remember what I had just read because I was thinking of the bird I had seen earlier.
Later in life, I’d sit at the kitchen table, staring out the window. There’s no telling how long it will take. Thoughts rush in from yesterday, today and tomorrow. I need to make dinner, take the dog for a walk, the kids will be home soon... But I can’t move. I know that I should, but I can’t. Afterward, I berate myself, unable to understand why I didn’t get up, why I wasted so much precious time, so much of my life doing nothing, it seems.
Since being treated, I have an inner calmness that is new to me. Medication doesn’t organize my day; it doesn’t remind me to pick up the kids or walk the dog. However, it allows me to move when I’ve been staring out the window for too long.

5 . On the “healthy” section of any breakfast menu, you’re bound to spot an egg white omelet (煎蛋卷). With no fat and just a quarter of the calories in a whole egg, the whites look like the best choice at first glance. Not so fast, though new research shows a good reason why you might want to keep the yolk (蛋黄) in if you want to get fit. Plus, forget the bad impression that the cholesterol (胆固醇) in yolks has gotten in the past. The USDA removed limits on dietary cholesterol in its most recent dietary guidelines. It’s all because evidence doesn’t back up claims that the cholesterol you eat has much influence on blood cholesterol levels.
In a recent study, researchers had ten young men eat either whole eggs or egg whites after completing a strength-training workout. Both egg choices contained 18 grams of protein, and the eggs were developed with chemical markers. Thanks to them, the researchers tracked how the men’s bodies used amino acids (氨基酸) from the eggs and egg whites, and found some surprising results. About 65 to 70 percent of amino acids were available in the blood for both the whole egg and egg white groups suggesting they’d be equally useful in building muscles. But the rest of the results didn’t back up that conclusion.
When the researchers looked specifically at how much protein synthesis — the process that helps muscles repair and grow — occurred, one form of egg clearly did better than the other. “Having whole eggs immediately after exercise resulted in greater protein synthesis than just having egg whites,” says lead study author Nicholas Burd in a statement.
Although this study was too small I to be conclusive, its conclusion backs up whole egg benefits that nutritionists have been praising for years. From their point of view egg whites are high-protein, low-calorie, but the yolk contains nearly all of an egg’s vitamins. And one study found that adults who eat whole eggs in the morning lose more weight and body fat than those who get the same number of calories from a bread-based breakfast. While no large studies have looked into the weight-loss benefits of whole eggs vs egg whites, there’s also no evidence that the 140 calories in two whole large eggs should scare you away. Crack on, egg lovers.

9 . A new study conducted in China, and published by the medical journal Neurology, indicates people who sleep for a large amount of time up their stroke (中风) risks by 85 percent. In addition, those who take regular 90-minute naps (小睡) increase their risks of stroke by 25 percent, compared with brief-30 minute naps or avoiding naps entirely. Disturbed sleep also raised stroke risk by 29 percent, according to the study.
Researcher Dr. Xiaomin Zhang, head of the team, told the Associated Press, “People, especially middle-aged and older adults, should pay more attention to their time spent in bed attempting to sleep and midday napping, and sleep quality, because appropriate duration of sleep and nap and maintaining good sleep quality may complement other behavioral interventions for preventing stroke.” Dr. Zhang cautions that the study only shows an association between long periods of sleep and a stroke, but does not prove that naps and long periods of sleep cause strokes.
Other studies have pointed out a link between excessive (过度的) or poor sleep and obesity (肥胖), which leads to increased stroke risk. Those risks, including high blood pressure, were factored into Dr. Zhang's team's data.
Dr. Zhang's study collected data from 31,750 people living in China with a median age of 62. After six years of self-reported follow-ups and physical examinations, 1,500 of the participants were found to have suffered strokes during that ensuing period of time.
Dr. Zhang noted that the study is limited, since it was conducted mainly on elderly patients. The advice within it may apply only to the elderly.
Dr. Salman Azhar, director of stroke at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City said, “If you sleep so much, you're actually decreasing your activity and a reduction in activity leads to a number of things that increase your risk of obesity.” Activity seems to be the key, according to Azhar. If activity is limited and the amount of sleep increases, the stroke risk will increase.
