1 . Like all big cities, Paris has a traffic problem: lots of cars, lots of traffic jams and lots of pollution from exhaust fumes (废气). So the city began a scheme (计划) to improve the situation.
Under the Velib project ('Velib' comes from vélo liberté, or 'bicycle freedom') people can take a bicycle, use it for as long as they want, and then leave it at the same or another bicycle station. The first half-hour on the bike is free, but if you don't return it after 30 minutes, you have to pay. But it's only €1 a day or €29 a year! The bicycles are heavy (25 kg), and they are all grey and have baskets. There are about 20,000 of them in the city, and around 1,450 bicycle stations. So there are a lot more Velib stations than the 298 subway stations!
Paris is not the first city to have a project like this. But not everybody thinks it's a great idea. One Parisian said, "These bicycles are only for short journeys. If people want to travel across the city, they won't use a bicycle — they'll still use their cars."
A city spokesman said, 'The bicycle project won't solve all our traffic problems, of course. But it might help reduce air pollution. Traffic, together with factory fumes, is a big problem. There aren't any simple answers to traffic problems and pollution in cities. But unless we do something now, there will be more traffic jams and temperatures will continue to rise, so the problems in our environment will get worse. The bikes might help people to lead a healthier life, too.'

6 . You Can Fly More Frequently
When traveling, airfare can take up a large part of your travel budget. What if you could fly practically for free? If it were possible, then you would probably travel more, right?
Sign up for mileage (里程) programs. You can’t gain miles if you don’t sign up.
Buy gifts and have dinner out. Most mileage programs have a business list where you can register several credit or debit cards and then earn miles for each purchase you make through their participating shops or meal you have at restaurant partners.
Use your credit card. Look for a card that gives you rewards. There are a ton of credit card companies that offer mileage cards that give you miles for each dollar you spend. Use it for bills, groceries, gas and anything else you would normally use your bank account for and then pay it off at the end of the month.
Rent a car. Whenever you rent a car, you have the choice to include your frequent flyer member number.
A.Some will charge a fee |
B.With frequent flyer programs, you can |
C.You’re probably doing these things anyway |
D.It’s an easy way to accumulate miles and can add up really fast |
E.In fact, you can get a free plane ticket just focusing on certain ones |
F.Join frequent flyer programs, so you can start accumulating those miles |

8 . Self-driving vehicles will rely on cameras, sensors and artificial intelligence(AI)to recognize and respond to road and traffic conditions, but sensing is the most effective for objects and movement in the neighborhood of the vehicle. Not everything important in a car’s environment will be caught by the vehicle’s camera. Another vehicle approaching at high speed on a collision (碰撞) track might not be visible until it’s too late. This is why vehicle-to-vehicle communication is undergoing rapid development. Our research shows that cars will need to be able to chat and cooperate on the road, although the technical challenges are considerable.
Applications for vehicle-to-vehicle communication range from vehicles driving together in a row, to safety messages about nearby emergency vehicles. Vehicles could alert each other to avoid collisions or share notices about passers-by and bicycles.
From as far as several hundred meters away, vehicles could exchange messages with one another or receive information from roadside unit’s(RSUs)about nearby incidents or dangerous road conditions through 4G network.
A high level of AI seems required for such vehicles, not only to self -drive from A to B, but also to react intelligently to messages received. Vehicles will need to plan, reason, strategize and adapt in the light of information received in real time and to carry out cooperative behaviors. For example, a group of autonomous vehicles might avoid a route together because of potential risks, or a vehicle could decide to drop someone off earlier due to messages received, a foreseen crow ding ahead.
Further applications of vehicle-to-vehicle communication are still being researched, including how to perform cooperative behavior.

9 . Driving in a foreign country is always different in at least some ways from driving in your own country. Here are some general points regarding driving in New Zealand.
● Visitors wishing to drive in New Zealand do not require an international driver's licenses but are required to carry their local driver's license whenever driving.
● Vehicles drive on the left-hand side of the road as they do in Britain, Australia, and Japan. Most rental vehicles will have a sticker reminding you of this important fact.
● When the traffic light is red, you must stop. There is no left turn rule as in North America.
● New Zealand road rules follow international standards but please note that in New Zealand vehicles turning left must give way to traffic turning right.
● In general, if you are turning left (where there are give-way signs or no signs), give way to vehicles that not turning. In all other situations, give way to vehicles crossing or coming from your right.
● Seat belts must be worn at all times while driving in New Zealand. This stands for the driver and passengers. The driver is responsible for ensuring all passengers are wearing their seatbelts.
● Do not drink alcohol before driving in New Zealand-drinking and driving laws are strictly enforced.
● Speed limits are in kilometers per hour (kph), not miles per hour (mph).
Speed conversion: 1 kph equals 0.621mph; 1 mph equals 1.61 kph.
● The speed limit on the open road is 100km/h. In towns and cities the speed limit is 50km/h. Be sure to obey all school crossing speed reductions as speed cameras operate regularly throughout New Zealand.

Dear Tom,
I’m very glad to learn from your e-mail that you and your parents will come to Shanghai and call on me in April 30th. But I’m terrible sorry that I can’t meet with you at Shanghai Pudong International Airport because I have to attend a meeting in Beijing. Now let me tell you the way to your home. When you get out the airport, you can take Bus NO. 936 to Rainbow Hotel Shanghai. Walking across Xianxia Road to the west till you see the supermarket on your right. Turn to the left there and go straightly on. Then you can see a bank on your left. The apartment building I lived in is next to the bank. Find Room 601 that my mother will be waiting for you.
