Janet went down the long set of     1     (stair), surrounded by people. She held onto the rail, anxiety growing gradually for this was her first time taking the subway.     2     everyone seemed to think it was normal. Soon she reached the platform     3     other passengers stood and waited. A bell     4     (ring) a couple minutes later, and a voice came over the loudspeaker, saying that they should step back and wait. The lights of the approaching train rapidly grew     5     (close). Things were getting interesting.

The train whistled past the passengers, slowing to a stop     6     the end of the platform. The doors slid open, and a crowd of people exited. With those people     7     (rush) out, the new passengers hurried onto the train. Janet went with them. The doors shut moments later, and the     8     (friend) voice came over the loudspeaker inside the train, warning them     9     (stand) back from doors. Janet grabbed onto the nearest pole, since there were no seats for her.

She looked around the crowded train and supported     10     (she) as the train began to move along. After a few minutes, she smiled, enjoying the ride. It was actually pretty fun after all!
