1 . Yang Xingyu, 23, took a liking to fried insects the first time she ate them while touring Lijiang, Yunnan province. “I ate fried locusts (蝗虫) and silkworm chrysalises (蚕蛹). Although they looked a little strange, they were crisp. Due to the protein they provide, I now eat them for nutrition,” she said to China Daily.

Like Yang, about two billion people around the world have added eatable insects such as beetles, caterpillars and bees into their diets, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). They can be fried, baked, braised with soup, mixed with dessert, or even eaten raw.

The reason why the global interest in eatable insects has increased is that it is imperative to develop new food sources that are safe to eat, according to Huang Dawei, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Zoology. A UN report in July showed the global population is expected to rise to 8.5 billion by 2030, 9.7 billion by 2050, and about 10.4 billion by the 2080s. Huang said that the global population is rising much faster than the availability of food. As such, developing new food sources — especially sources of protein — is extremely urgent.

Insects are rich in protein, vitamins and minerals, which are all good for human bodies. In addition to their nutritional value, raising and eating insects is also friendly toward the environment and ecological conservation. Compared with traditional food sources such as farm animals, insect farming needs less land and water for production. Plus, insect farming releases less greenhouse gases. For example, pigs produce 10 to 100 times more greenhouse gases per kilogram than mealworms.

Even so, Guo Jianjun, professor at Guizhou University, warns that not all insects can be eaten, adding that some are poisonous, and that some people may even be allergic to insect protein. Knowing this, it would be best for would-be eaters of insects to first learn about the features of insects and make sure they are eatable before eating them.

3 . E-sports describes the world of competitive, organized video gaming. Competitors from different leagues or teams compete in the same video games: Fortnite, League of Legends, Counter-Strike, Call of Duty, to name a few. These gamers are watched and followed by millions of their fans all over the world, who attend live events or watch on TV or online. Streaming services, like Twitch, allow viewers to watch their favorite gamers playing in real time.

According to a report from Newzoo, a market analytics (分析) company, 380 million people worldwide will watch e-sports this year. Most of these e-sports lovers will watch from North America, China and South Korea.

Colleges have even got in on the action. More than 50 colleges in America have e-sports programs, recognized by a governing body called the National Association of Collegiate E-sports. NACE tournaments (锦标赛) give out thousands of dollars in prize money, which is put to scholarships for the winners.

E-sports players, like traditional athletes, can make big money. Tournaments can provide millions of dollars in prize money, which is typically divided among the players on the winning teams. That means a world’s very tip-top player can easily earn up to seven figures of money in a year. Teams and event organizers also earn money from ticket sales for these competitions. The popular League of Legends Tournament from 2017 brought in $5.5 million in ticket sales.

At the end of 2018, 1.6 billion people had some knowledge of e-sports — that’s more than one fifth of the entire world’s population. E-sports will continue to grow as an industry in the foreseeable future. So if you haven’t heard much about e-sports yet, give it time. Its spread, both globally and culturally, is certain to happen.

5 . On the first day of school, all the excited students walked into the room expecting to start: everyone but David.

He had had a hard summer. His father was in jail (监狱). His mother had to work nights, so she wasn't at home in the evening and was sleeping when he woke up.

As the weeks went on, David slowly gave up doing his homework and staying on task, and began to get into more troubles out on the playground. He was going downhill quickly. It was clear that he was looking for any kind of attention—even if it was negative. I also knew that he was not getting much support at home. If David was going to pass the fifth grade, I need to come up with a plan.

One day, David and I sat in the library and just talked. I told him that I knew that he was not an “F” student and that I was not going to let him fail. It was my job to teach him, but his job was to try. We talked about home and what he did after school. He knew what I expected him to do and that I respected him as a person. As a result, his behavior in my room improved. From then on David and I periodically sat in the library and just talked. He told me that his goal was to pass the fifth grade and not be suspended (停学). Finally, the last day of school arrived. David had met his goal.

During Teacher Appreciation (感谢) Week, the students had written about any teacher they wanted. In my booklet, on a wrinkled piece of paper, it reads. “You never give up on me and focus on the silver lining because you know I am smart. And for that I not only appreciate you, but admire you”, signed David. After reading that, I sat down with tears rolling down my face. We, as teachers, never know when or how we affect our students. But it's the note like this that makes all we do worthwhile.

1. According to the passage, we know the writer is_____________.
A.talentedB.brainlessC.patientD.selfish
2. Why did David like to make troubles in school?
A.Because his father was put into prison.
B.Because he was disappointed to the society.
C.Because he was laughed at by classmates.
D.Because he wanted to attract attention.
3. Which of the following quotes can express the writer's feeling?
A.Teachers appreciate being appreciated, for teacher appreciation is their highest award. —William Prince
B.Teach the children so that it will not be necessary to teach the adults.—Abraham Lincoln
C.What the teacher is, is more important than what he teaches.—Karl Menninger
D.The very spring and root of honesty and virtue lie in good education.—Plutarch

7 . Have you ever thought of quitting your job when you feel exhausted? Maybe most of you would say “yes”. After a particularly busy period at work, I decided to get away from it all by going on a hike in the mountains in southern France.

Before I left, I read an interesting story in a magazine. It read, “Once, while I was riding on a crowded bus, the man sitting next to me threw his cell phone out of the window when his phone rang. I was surprised. He looked at me, shrugged (耸耸肩) and looked away. I had no idea whether it was his or stolen or whether he even knew what a cell phone was or not, but he clearly wanted to be free of it, because it clearly troubled him.”

Billions of people across the world use cell phones. Though cell phones are a wonderful way for communication, they often do the exact opposite. Using cell phones can increase stress within families and friends.

So when I recently returned home, I got rid of my cell phone. Now I go outside without taking my phone with me. I’ve noticed things in my neighborhood I never noticed before, such as gardens. I’ve met new people, started conversations with neighbors I didn’t speak to before and talked with some of my friends face to face instead of chatting over the phone.

Instead of keeping me off from the world, stopping using my cell phone has helped me get even closer to my family and friends.

A.are too expensive for many people

A.tell us not to let cell phones control our lives

C.share his experiences in France with us
