文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了苏格兰邓迪大学的研究表明当人们处于饥饿状态时,他们更倾向于立刻选择小的奖励,而不是稍后获得更大的回报。

3 . Taking a trip to the grocery store with an empty belly is a risky business, as anyone who ever went to the market on an empty stomach and exited with a cart (手推车) full of chips and cookies can prove. We wonder how our brain works when making bigger decisions. A study conducted by researchers from the University of Dundee shows why we may want to have a small bite before making a big decision.

Benjamin Vincent from the University of Dundee’s Psychology department and his co-author Jordan Skyrnka tested 50 people two times: once when they followed their normal eating patterns and once when they did not eat anything during the day. Using three different types of rewards (food, money, and song downloads), the team discovered that when people were hungry they would choose a smaller reward immediately rather than a larger one in the future. In fact, the team noted that when presented with the option of receiving the reward now versus (与……相对) double the award at some point in the future, participants would usually volunteer to wait for 35 days to earn a double bonus, but when they were hungry, they said they would only wait three days.

“We wanted to know whether being in a state of hunger had a specific effect on how you make decisions only relating to food or if it had broader effects, and this research suggests decision-making gets more present-focused when people are hungry,” Vincent said in a story about the study on the university’s website.

In an earlier study of the subject by a team at Cambridge University in England, the researchers noted that serotonin (血清素) plays an important role in the decision-making process. “Since the raw material for making serotonin — an amino acid (氨基酸) called tryptophan — only comes from diet, levels of the chemical decline between meals,” reports a piece in the Telegraph about the study. “This can lead to decision-making resistance and thoughtlessness,” say the team. “Some foods are particularly rich in the amino acid, notably chicken soup and chocolate. Red meat, dairy products, nuts, seeds, bananas, tuna, shellfish, and soy products are also good sources.” Consequently, being in a state of hunger can throw your decision-making off balance. It’s best to grab a snack and refuel before making any important choice.

1. What could a hungry customer do at a grocery store?
A.Purchase too many snacks.B.Eat more food than usual.
C.Wander longer than before.D.Buy many small necessities.
2. What did Vincent discover in the study?
A.Hunger may have no effect on decision-making.
B.Hunger may cause people to choose an instant prize.
C.Hungry people prefer future rewards to present ones.
D.Hungry people are more patient than non-hungry people.
3. What can a decline in serotonin levels lead to?
A.Positive influences.B.Negative results.
C.Energetic behaviors.D.Favorable responses.
4. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.How to make a diet plan before a dinnerB.Where to pick up food when shopping
C.Why not choose snacks when in hungerD.What to eat before making a big decision

6 . Have you ever escaped taking on a role or opportunity because you didn’t feel confident enough? Perhaps the voice in your head asked: “Why me? I am not yet ready, not capable enough, or don’t have enough experience.”

If you can relate, you’re among the majority of women with whom I’ve worked. I recently asked more than 120 women, from areas including the U.S., UK, Australia, Georgia, Italy, India, Jamaica, and Bermuda: If you’ve ever avoided risks, what factors and reasons contributed to this? More than 70% reported that selfdoubt, or not having enough belief in themselves, their capabilities, or their skills, was a driving factor.

As one wellknown executive told me: “Every day I doubt myself. I doubt that I am good enough to be where I am.”

This shouldn’t come as a surprise. We know selfdoubt is a pervasive and often paralyzing concern, particularly for women. A study by psychologists at Cornell and Washington State highlighted higher levels of selfdoubt in women. Research has also shown that women will apply for a job only if they meet all of the qualifications, while men will apply when they fulfill only 60%. Another recent study identified a considerable gender gap when it comes to selfpromotion, with women providing less favorable assessments of their own past performance and potential future ability. Ultimately, men take more chances on themselves, and that pays dividends in the long run.

While this pattern of selfdoubt emerged again and again in studies, my interactions, and my client work, I also noticed another commonality: These women’s selfdoubts weren’t sabotaging their success. The vast majority of successful women leaders I’ve interviewed and coached have built exciting and satisfying careers even while facing selfdoubt.

What these women also had in common is courage in the absence of confidence—a trait that is often weaponized against women and used to explain why they fail to achieve career goals. My work has found that successful women take decisive action to move forward even while grappling with fears and doubts and questioning their own “readiness”.

“As women, we often feel like we have to be 100% ready in order to move forward. But, if you are 50% or 75% there, jump. Just do it,” said Megan Costello, former executive director of the Boston Mayor’s Office for Women’s Advancement.

1. What is the real factor for women to escape taking on a role?
A.Higher risks.B.Different beliefs.C.Inner feelings.D.Related experiences.
2. What is typical of women in terms of selfpromotion?
A.They tend to be less optimistic.B.They prefer to be well qualified.
C.They try to be favorably assessed.D.They hope to be clearly identified.
3. Which can best replace the underlined word “sabotaging” in Paragraph 5?
A.Promoting.B.Weakening.C.Achieving.D.Balancing.
4. How do women with selfdoubts succeed?
A.They should be courageous and decisive.B.They should keep themselves unprepared.
C.They should stop questioning their careers.D.They should learn from famous executives.

8 . Many regions in China have introduced COVID-19 vaccination (接种疫苗) among children aged 3 to 11. Kids are encouraged to take it and the project is progressing, which might be important to stopping the spread of the coronavirus.     1

Why do children get the same dosage (剂量) as adults?

When children get sick, they are generally given a reduced dosage. Many parents are worried that the same COVID-19 vaccine dosage will be a burden on the small body. So there is need for proper dose in children.     2    . The process of vaccines taking effect has no relation with the weight and body surface area of the receiver. In fact, for the majority of vaccines, the recommended doses for both babies and adults are the same.

Can children have full immunity (免疫力) after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine?

Some parents doubt whether vaccinating children aged 3 to 11 can produce the due immune effect as their immune systems are still developing. Actually, vaccines can work exactly the same in both children and adults. The vaccine will produce a near 100 percent immune response in children.    3     So the same vaccination strategy has been adopted for all age groups in China.

    4

A vaccine has to go through a strict procedure before being widely used in a specific age group. Enough data need to be collected to get emergency use or come onto the market. So the medical experiments have to be considered in advance. China has carried out a series of such studies. Based on research resnlts, the risk of negative reactions in children is no higher than that of adults.

5    . So far the most frequently reported three negative reactions are fever, pain and tiredness. At present, the government is planning to study children as young as 6 months old in the future.

A.Will the vaccine work on children forever?
B.Is the COVID-19 vaccine safe for children?
C.The virus was either carried by a person or with goods.
D.However, the way the vaccines work differs from that of other drugs.
E.Some parents find themselves having questions about the vaccination.
F.This has also been proved true in medical experiments on different age groups.
G.The COVID-19 vaccination for children aged 3 to 11 has been in progress for some time.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。阐述了教育技术面临的挑战和解决方法。

9 . Supporters of education technology have made big promises over the past two decades: that by 2019, half of all secondary school courses would be online; that videos and practice problems can let students learn mathematics at their own speed; or that typical students left alone with internet-connected computers can learn anything without the help of schools or teachers.

Then in 2020, people around the world were forced to turn to online learning as COVID-19 shut down schools. It was education technology’s big moment, but for many students and families, remote learning has been a disappointment. When the world needs it most, why has education technology seemed so unsatisfactory?

Educational software has a long history, but there have been two major challenges. The first is that most people depend on human connection to maintain their motivation (动力). When a student closes his computer while having a class, nobody can see it and respond accordingly.

The second challenge is that assessments are especially tough. We can ask students to work out how far a tectonic plate (地壳板块) might move and computers can immediately tell whether the answer is right. But if we ask them to write a paragraph that explains how the tectonic plate works, computers can’t identify correct, partially correct and incorrect responses.

Education technology has long promised to transform (彻底改变) education, but at best, the field has developed individual tools for the curriculum (课程). For school learning, we don’t have online tools or resources that are any better than a printed textbook.

Every technological solution is also a human capital problem: learning with technologies requires giving teachers and students time to play with and get used to new tools and routines. For most teachers, the road to more effective teaching with technology looks less like a transformation, and more like tinkering: a slow and steady process towards finding the right tool or approach for particular students.

1. What's the purpose of paragraph 1?
A.To show off the fruitful past.
B.To lead in the unsatisfactory reality.
C.To prove the efficiency of online learning.
D.To explore the potential of educational software.
2. According to the text, education technology fails to________.
A.give students immediate responses
B.provide students with correct answers
C.remind students to keep focused in class
D.equip students with communication skills
3. The author’s attitude towards education technology can be described as________.
A.doubtfulB.confusedC.supportiveD.hopeful
4. What should teachers do according to the last paragraph?
A.Seek new technological tools for education.
B.Guard against the popularity of online education.
C.Use education technology based on students’ needs.
D.Make thorough changes to their technology teaching.

10 . New Zealand has announced it will ban (禁止) smoking for the next generation, so that those who are aged 14 and under today will never be legally (合法) able to buy tobacco.

“The new law means the legal smoking age will increase every year to create a smoke-free generation of New Zealanders,” associate health minister Dr Ayesha Verrall said on Thursday.

The government announced the rising age alongside other measures to make smoking unaffordable and difficult to reach, trying to realize its goal of making the country entirely smoke-free with in the next four years. Other measures include reducing the legal amount of nicotine in tobacco products to very low levels, cutting down the shops where cigarettes could legally be sold, and providing services for smokers to give up smoking. The new law will not limit vape (电子烟) sales.

“We want to make sure young people never start smoking so we will make it illegal to sell or supply smoked tobacco products to teenagers. People aged 14 when the law comes into effect will never be able to legally buy tobacco,” Verrall said.

New Zealand’s daily smoking rates have been dropping over time—down to 11.6% in 2018, from 18% a decade earlier. But smoking rates for Maori and Pacifika were far higher—29% for Maori and 18% for Pasifika. “If nothing changes, it would be decades till Maori smoking rates fall below 5%,” Verrall said. She said banning smoking in the next four years was within reach: “I believe it is. The issue is, though, if we don’t change what we’re doing, we won’t make it for Maori—and that’s what the law is really focused on”.

1. All of the following are measures to cut down on smoking in New Zealand EXCEPT ________.
A.Raising the cost of cigarettes.B.Preventing the sale of vapes.
C.Helping people give up smokingD.Reducing tobacco-selling shops.
2. Which might be New Zealand’s daily smoking rate in 2008?
A.5%.B.11.6%.C.18%.D.29%.
3. What is the real focus of the law according to Verrall?
A.Cutting smoking rates to 5% in New Zealand.
B.Helping to lower the smoking rates for Maori faster.
C.Making it illegal for teenagers to buy tobacco products.
D.Banning teenage smoking completely in the next four years.
4. What’s the text mainly about?
A.Satisfying results of the new law in New Zealand.B.People’s responses to the new law in New Zealand.
C.New Zealand’s ban on smoking for next generation.D.New Zealand’s serious situation of teenage smoking.
