Many are still playing a mobile game called Travel Frog. You play as the “mother” of a frog who lives alone and enjoys traveling.     1     you need to prepare are food and tools for his trips. The frog will send you postcards while he is away.

The game’s popularity may have something to do with     2     lonely people are these days. Many players have said    3     the lonely frog is just like them. But playing with the frog helps them forget their loneliness for a while.

It seems     4     loneliness is common today. About 40 percent of American adults say     5     they are lonely. And in the UK,about one in five people in the country is “always or often lonely”. This is     6     The Telegraph reported recently.

This might be     7     the UK government declared the country’s first “Minister of Loneliness” in January. The minister’s job is to find     8     we should help the UK citizens feel less lonely.

This loneliness problem may be partly due to     9     social media does. When we see pictures of friends having fun or posting selfies(自拍) without us, we may compare their “perfect” lives with our own and feel inferior(较差的) and lonely.

But we should remember     10     no one is bound(注定) to be lonely. As a poet once wrote, “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent(陆地), a part of the main.”

The rituals(仪式) of office work used to mean communication with colleagues was a given. Chats in the coffee room, communal birthday cakes or a shared walk to the car park at the end of the day provided brief moments to connect outside daily tasks.     1     people didn’t directly work together or weren’t on the same team, employees had at least some colleagues to exchange a few casual words with throughout the workday.

The switch to remote work     2     (change) that recently. Now, employees work via virtual channels: they interact with the people they share tasks with. For many, there is no work-related reason to seek out colleagues     3     aren’t connected to their roles and workloads, and many people’s work worlds have shrunk – no more ‘just because’ chats to the woman in IT or guy in accounts. Colleagues who used to be small – but important – parts of workers’ office lives are now effectively ghosts.

It’s clear this impacts workers; research shows many remote employees feel less connected to their teams and companies. Solving the problem is difficult – after all, Slacking or Zooming a co-worker you don’t know well, for no work-related reason, could feel decidedly odd. Yet finding ways    4     (restore) these post-pandemic work communities     5     be key to ongoing wellbeing at work.

A study by a team of US academics and Microsoft researchers analysed email data sent from 1.4 billion professional email accounts across thousands of organisations, including Microsoft, between July 2018 and November 2020, and identified similar results. Organisational silos (组织孤岛) became     6     (define) during the pandemic, and these silos also became less connected to each other     7     people talked mainly to their own team members. This trend persisted even as the silos themselves became unstable, for example when members left the company.

When the pandemic forced a sudden switch to full-time remote work, connections with colleagues were very different. The shift came as the company prepared for a global launch, meaning the workload was intense. Instead of being a joy, long virtual meetings with external contacts left Thomson     8     (drain). Interactions with colleagues were reduced to daily 15-minute check-ins, as opposed to the casual chats she used to have on and off all day.

“It was pretty productive,     9     there wasn’t any downtime at all,” she says. The opportunity to chat, to joke or to have conversations had been squeezed out. Contact with some of her indirect colleagues and work contacts stopped altogether,     10     (shrink) her social circle at work. “For those of us who are more extrovert, a lot was lost,” she says.

Beauty bias: We tend to think pretty people are morally superior

Humans have always associated beauty with goodness. The prevalence of the assumption that beautiful people are good     1     (study) for the past few decades, with extensive research on the subject going back to the 1970s.     2     you start thinking that you’d never judge somebody by how they look, the studies suggest that you likely do it all the time — very quickly and not fully aware of it.

This bias has real-world impacts. The attractive are     3     (likely) to be found guilty by simulated juries and more likely to get reduced punishments when they are. People tend to vote for more attractive politicians, promote better-looking underlings, and even give more attention to better-looking children than those with —     4     George Carlin put it — “severe appearance deficits”.

A study recently published in the Journal of Nonverbal Behavior shed new light on the bias. Different from previous studies,     5     not only looked to see whether people associate positive traits with good-looking people (we know they do), but also took a closer look at which traits are associated with appearance, with two tests respectively focused on purely moral traits, such as being fair, trustworthy, or honest, and positive but non-moral traits, such as being funny,     6     (organize), or calm.

Lining up with previous studies     7    (show) that people associate beauty with all manner of positive traits, the results of both tests also gave new insight into     8     traits are most affected by the “halo effects” that good looks provide. In both studies, moral traits were more likely to be associated with beauty than non-moral traits. The effect was particularly notable in the second study, in which beautiful people were 20% more likely to be considered     9    (have) these traits than the average person, compared to only a 10% increase in the perceived likelihood they would have the non-moral traits.

The authors of the study noted that they expect their findings to have real-world implications. Given how many previous studies demonstrate that there are serious consequences from this bias, their stance should not surprise us. They pointed out, however, that     10     the long history of science knowing that this bias exists, “there is no intervention available that may reduce prejudice toward or discrimination against unattractive individuals.”

American men were the worst off, with 2.2 years shaved off their life expectancy at birth. Men in Lithuania faced the second    5    (large) impact on their life expectancy, with a cut of 1.7 years.

Reductions in life expectancy overall    6    (occur) in 27 of the 29 countries analyzed by the study. Only men and women in Denmark and Norway and women in Finland managed to    7    (successful) avoid drops in life expectancy, the study said. Non-pharmaceutical interventions and strong healthcare systems in these countries were cited as    8    (factor) that could help explain this.

All the countries    9    life expectancy dropped had taken an average of 5、6 years    10    (achieve). Just a one year increase in life expectancy. The pandemic wiped out of this progress, the study said.
