1 . BE A GOOD TOURIST

Tourism can be both good and bad. Yes, it brings in money for the local economy and creates lots of jobs for locals.    1

2     Tourists have used paint, rocks, or oven keys to write on the Luxor Temple in Egypt, the Colosseum in Rome, Stonehenge in the UK, memorial stones at the bottom of Qomolangma, and many, many other places. Thousands of tourists sites are being destroyed by tourists who “love them to death”.    3     If you want to leave a mark on the world, do it by changing someone’s life with kindness and love. Pass kindness along to future generations, not destruction.

Another big problem in some places has been tourists disturbing the local people and life. Some tourists wander around and take pictures of local people without asking for their permission. For example, Chiang Mai University in Thailand and Yonsei University in South Korea have great numbers of tourists visiting their campuses and walking through their libraries and other public areas, taking pictures of students and disturbing their studies. I have three words for tourists like this: please be considerate.    4

The number of problems from tourists is endless: walking in large groups without considering others who need to walk by, crossing roads without observing local traffic laws, and many more. The only way to solve the issue of the terrible tourist is to make sure that you are not one!    5     Remember, whenever you step outside your country’s borders, you are representing your country to the rest of the world.

A.Just think from other aspects.
B.Have fun in a way that does not disturb others.
C.But it may also bring some problems.
D.Be the best, kindest, most polite tourist possible.
E.I have three words for people like this: please stop it.
F.One growing problem is tourists who want to prove that they have visited someplace.
G.Pass kindness along to future generations.

2 . In so many ways, cyberspace (网络空间) mirrors the real world. People ask for information, play games, and share hobby tips. Others buy and sell products. Still others look for friendship, or even love.

Unlike the real world, however, your knowledge about a person is limited to words on a computer screen. Identity (身份) and appearance mean very little in cyberspace. Rather, a person’s thoughts—or at least the thoughts they type—are what really count. So even the shyest person can become a chat-room star.

Usually, this “faceless” communication doesn’t create problems. Identity doesn’t really matter when you’re in a chat room discussing politics or hobbies. In fact, this stress on the ideas themselves makes the Internet a great place for exciting conversation. Where else can so many people come together to chat?

But some Internet users want more than just someone to chat with. They’re looking for serious love relationships. Is cyberspace a good place to find love? That answer depends on whom you ask. Some of these relationships actually succeed. Others fail.

Supporters say that the Internet allows couples lo gel lo know each other intellectually (智力地) first. Personal appearance doesn’t get in the way. Bill others argue that no one can truly know another person in cyberspace. Why? Because the Internet gives users a lot of control over how others view them. Internet users can carefully change their words to fit whatever image (形象) they want to give. In a sense, they’re not really themselves.

All of this may be fine if the relationship stays in cyberspace. But not knowing a person is a big problem in a love relationship. With so many unknowns, it’s easy to let one’s imagination “fill in the blanks.” This unavoidably leads to disappointment when couples meet in person. How someone imagines an online friend is often quite different than the real person.

So, before looking for love in cyberspace, remember the advice of Clifford Stoll: “Life in the real world is far richer than anything you’ll find on a computer screen.”

1. Which of the following is not true according to the passage?
A.It is possible that people can’t find true love online.
B.Appearance and identity is of little importance for relationship online.
C.A shy person will surely become talkative online.
D.Internet users are encouraged to create images in cyberspace.
2. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 5?
A.Cyberspace mirrors the real world.
B.Don’t judge a book by its cover.
C.Inner beauty is more important than appearance.
D.Things are not always what they seem.
3. What does “this” in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A.The online friend.B.One’s imagination.
C.Love relationship.D.The real friend.
4. What is the author’s attitude towards looking for love cyberspace?
A.He is against it.B.He supports it.
C.He cares little about it.D.He is interested in it.

3 . Most people are hoping the recent stranding (搁浅) of the 1,300-foot, 220,000-ton Ever Given container ship (集装箱货运船) in the Suez Canal was a one-off---just a case of a very big ship getting stuck in a narrow waterway. However, more than 100 ships of similar size are passing through the world’s waterways, and even bigger ones are being built.

Capt.Andrew Kinsey, a senior marine-risk consultant (海洋风险顾问) for a global financial services firm, says with heavy weather in the North Pacific Ocean over the past year, a lot of containers are going overboard (落水). Part of the problem is the way the ultra-large ships handle at sea with towering stacks (堆叠) of containers, especially in strong winds.

Alan Murphy, chief executive of a container-shipping research and advisory firm in Copenhagen, Denmark, says it’s difficult to know whether there has been an increase in the number of containers going overboard or if trans-Pacific container losses over the past year have just received more attention. In a November report, the World Shipping Council found the number of such incidents to be falling in recent years, although the report does not cover 2020. There is no central database for reporting container losses, so it’s not known exactly how many containers fall overboard, Murphy says.

Murphy says container ships are often fully loaded nowadays, as demand for consumer products has jumped during the corona virus pandemic. “In the past, these huge ships have never really sailed as fully loaded as they are now,” he says.“Obviously, the more the ship carries, the greater the risk of an incident happening.”

“The stranding of Ever Given in the Suez Canal is a warning,” Kinsey says.“We’ve been bring up the issue of size in our yearly safety and shipping review and in papers for over five years.”

Carrying more containers needs bigger and wider ships, which means it is harder for them to sail through narrow waterways like the Suez Canal and move when they get stuck.

1. What can we imply from paragraph 1?
A.It might be a tough task to build bigger ships.
B.Costs of overseas shipments might rise sharply.
C.There might be changes in the world’s waterways.
D.More accidents like the recent stranding might happen.
2. What did the World Shipping Council find in the November report?
A.No database for reporting container losses had been created.
B.Trans-Pacific container losses had received more attention.
C.The number of container losses had dropped in recent years before 2020.
D.More container losses happened in 2020 than in the past few years.
3. What leads to fully loaded container ships nowadays according to Murphy?
A.The extreme weather.B.The increasing size of ships
C.The slow transportation.D.The growing demand for consumer goods.
4. What do Kinsey’s words in the 5th paragraph show?
A.Warnings about the risks of stranding are given yearly.
B.Concern about larger ships has been voiced for some time.
C.Some container ships can carry as many goods as Ever Given.
D.Ships bigger than Ever Given won’t be allowed through the Suez Canal.

4 . Videos and livestreams with beauty tips are quite common nowadays. But if the tutor is just 5 years old, we should think twice about accepting the trend.

In an age where online celebrities and influencers control so many social platforms, chances are children are being exposed online to endless beauty products. There, child celebrities are pushing lipsticks, mascara, rouge and foundation in their makeup courses. “I just celebrated my 5th birthday, and now I am about to do this peach blossom makeup,” said a 5-year-old in a voiceover for her online video beauty tutorial.

Cosmetics for kids sends a negative message about self-worth by putting too much emphasis on outer beauty at too early an age. Sometimes, in some of the online beauty courses, makeup equals a hypersexualization which can have dangerous long-term effects. On the other hand, there are a great number of beauty products across many categories. It takes a lot of energy for kids to get familiar with using a certain type of cosmetics, depriving them of time better spent studying or playing outside. Moreover, in many cases, social media gets addictive. Exposing children early on to makeup and “online fame” could become an unhealthy indulgence.

Many online influencers often say, “Your kindergarten peers are using these products, so ask your mother to buy them for you as well.” Upon hearing such guidance, children as young as kindergarteners are quick to follow the fashion. Seeing beauty trends at such a young age also means youngsters face the anxiety and self-esteem issues surrounding body image far too early in life. Though reminding children they are beautiful just as they are can’t always compete with the attraction of the steady stream of marketers and influencers promising virtual perfection, parents and schools should still serve as guides for kids, teaching them a more multidimensional perspective that instead gets to the heart of what real beauty involves.

1. Why does the author say “we should think twice about accepting the trend” at the beginning?
A.We should be calm.B.We ought to be active.
C.We should think much.D.We ought to follow the trend.
2. What causes the young to value outer beauty according to the third paragraph?
A.Social media.B.Beauty courses.
C.Child celebrities.D.Cosmetics for kids.
3. Which of the following may be responsible for children surrounded by body image?
A.Kindergarten peers.B.Parents and schools.
C.Online influencers.D.Virtual perfection.
4. What can we infer about the author’s attitude to beauty trends at younger age from the text?
A.Active.B.Indifferent.C.Objective.D.Pessimistic.

5 . When Joanne Morton and Lydia Shaw came across the Boston Public Market, which features only New England businesspersons, they knew they had to stop in. The women, visiting from southeastern Connecticut, always try to buy local things. “We always try to support our local farmers and businessmen,” says Shaw. “We’re not into big companies,” adds Morton.

They aren’t alone. A great number of Americans choose “local” food, according to recent surveys from the International Food Information Council Foundation. But what does it mean to shop local things? For some, it is still a matter of geography or it is about supporting their local economy (经济). And for others, it is about knowing where their food comes from and how it is made, even if it is coffee shipped from a Costa Rican company.

Years earlier, Congress passed a bill that gave money to support local food. According to the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act, a product that can be considered local has to travel less than 400 miles.

But Lydia Zepeda, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has found the largest agreement about what can be called local: any product that comes from within an hour’s drive. “But is that with or without traffic?” she asks. “What if it crosses state lines?” adds John Hayes, a food science professor at Pennsylvania State University. “A customer might like to buy local things to help an old town,” he says. “Or maybe it’s just because local food tastes better,” says Kaitlin Bohon. “I taste a difference.” For Ms Bohon, buying local food is both about supporting New England business and knowing who grew and processed her food.

1. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.We won’t work in big companies.
B.Big companies don’t support local farmers.
C.Big companies are not good shopping places.
D.We’re not interested in the products of big companies.
2. What is one reason for shopping local things?
A.Lower price.B.After-sales service.
C.Local economy.D.Transportation costs.
3. What’s the purpose of the text?
A.To show what can be called local.
B.To make people produce more local things.
C.To discuss the meaning of buying local things.
D.To introduce the development of local things.
4. From which part of a magazine does the text come?
A.Life.B.Science.C.Health.D.Travel.

I am a senior high school student. In my opinion, the classroom is place for students to gain knowledges. So quietness is badly need for us to learn in the classroom. So recently some students have brought their mobile phones to the classroom and we often hear of the ring of mobile phones. Some of them even wasted precious time in class type short messages on the mobile phones. To keep the classroom quietly and make us focus more on their studies, I suggest that mobile phones shouldn’t be used in the classroom. At least, they shouldn’t be used where we are having a class.

Two years before, I traveled to Brazil and I rented for a car. Unfortunate, I had an accident and hit another car, and I needed to stay in a hospital for at least two week. I called my parents, so I did not tell them what had happened. I knew that they would be worried about myself because I was so farther away, and that my mother would not sleep if she knew. Therefore, I told them interested stories and how I am enjoying Brazil. As a result, nobody knew truth. I still think that it was the right thing to do.

8 . How To Teach Your Children Proper Manners

Do you think that proper manners are going the way of the dinosaur?    1    It’s not! Follow the steps below and you will have polite little citizens soon!

2    As soon as your children are able to talk, they can be taught proper manners. “Please” and “thank you” are the beginning steps, and the basics, and your child can learn them starting on day one. When your son hands you a toy, say, “thank you.” If you are asking your daughter to stop screeching, say “please”. You will soon find them repeating your example.

Model good manners. If you yawn or cough or sneeze without covering your mouth, how can you expect your child to do it? If you don’t say, “Excuse me” when you are interrupting a conversation, they will never learn to.    3

Teach phone manners.    4    “Hello, this is Suzie Q speaking.” When you are otherwise unwilling, teach them to say, “Mom is unavailable right now. May I take a message?” When you are available, teach them to say, “Yes, she is right here. Would you hold a moment please?” You will be so pleased when your friend or business associate calls and compliments you on the way your children answer the phone.

Teach eye contact. When your child is speaking to an adult, teach him to look the adult in the eye and speak clearly.    5    When an adult asks a question, the child should give a polite answer. Ignoring an adult, or anyone who speaks to a you, is rude and grounds for punishment.

These are just a few small ways to start your child down the path to good manners. Before you know it, they will be polite little ladies and gentlemen, and will have you to thank for a great start!

A.Start at the beginning.
B.Teach them to write thank-you notes.
C.Teach your child to answer the phone by introducing herself.
D.Do you think it’s too late to teach your children proper manners?
E.The best way to teach your child common manners is to model it yourself!
F.Mumbling or checking out his shoes is inappropriate and unacceptable.
G.They will learn that in order to get what they want, they will have to be polite.

9 . From skateboarding to Fleetwood Mac, TikTok users got creative in a pandemic (流行病) year with new songs, dances and shows in 60 seconds or less.

The social media video app on Wednesday shared its list of top 100 videos, creators and trends in America during 2020. “These videos brought joy and inspiration to millions of Americans in the rough year,” said Kudzi Chikumbu, director of creator community at TikTok.

The platform has been widely associated with Generation Z (people born after 1996), millennials (people born in the 1980s or 1990s) and influencers who have started careers based on the shared videos.

The Weeknd's Blinding Lights and Jason Derulo's Savage Love inspired TikTok dance challenges that made them among the top songs used on the app.

For some TikTok creators, the pandemic itself became inspiration to create a connection with other users. Comedian Caitlin Reilly used the app during quarantine (隔离) to make fun of those annoying coworkers for one of the top liked videos. And singer Curtis Roach made an song for the endless days at home with his song Bored in the House.

The second most popular video was an Idaho man named Nathan Apodaca who shot to fame after coolly singing Dreams by Fleetwood Mac, while skateboarding on a highway.

But the most liked TikTok video was awarded to Bella Poarch with 45 million followers, who created a simple but interesting video with a few seconds of well-timed head nods and eye rolls.

While the app might be designed for youth, Chikumbu said that the growth of TikTok this year has pushed it more into mainstream culture. “You're seeing everyone from the teenager to the college students with their parents and then their grandparents all making videos,” said Chikumbu. “And now TikTok truly transcends generations, particularly in this year when people had a lot of time to dig in and not only watch, but try.”

1. What do we know about The Weeknd?

B.He started a career based on shared videos.

10 . Many teens may feel anxious sometimes. It's the kind of nervousness that makes you bite your fingers before a big test. We spend more time online than we should. We feel good about ourselves or bad based on how many Likes and Followers we get on social media. Young people are developing a wrong view of life.

On the screen, we see what people want to show us. People usually only post photos where they are looking at their best. They meet friends around them and seem that they are having a great time. No one seems sad or lonely. In short, life is wonderful. But sooner or later, our young people compare their real life to it. They find that theirs doesn't seem as fun or exciting and grow worried that they may be missing out.

No wonder teachers are reporting more anxious students. It's reported that a lot more college students feel —too much anxiety. The percentage jumped from 50% in 2016 to 62% in 2021. Anxiety is now the most common mental-health problem in my country. It affects nearly one-third of teens and adults.

Certainly, we can't blame (责备)it on social media alone. We expect too much from our children and a lot of these expectations aren't reasonable. Their plans are packed with sports, clubs and homework. They don't have enough free time. We want our children to succeed, and we don't care how much it costs.

As parents, we must have more balance. On one hand, we push too hard, and on the other hand, we make life too easy for children. We shouldn't and can't promise our children that they will always be happy. We shouldn't try to protect them from the problems of everyday life. Let them solve the problems in person.

1. What does the underlined word “theirs” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Young people's life.B.Young people's friends.
C.Young people's photos.D.Young people's parents.
2. What does the fourth paragraph concentrate on?
A.The cost from parents.B.The duty of social media.
C.The hobbies of young people.D.The expectations from parents.
3. What does the writer suggest parents do in the last paragraph?
A.Try to meet teens' expectations.B.Help teens with their homework.
C.Give teens more free time to play sports.D.Allow teens to solve their own problems in life.
4. Which is the best title for the text?
A.What Causes Teens' NervousnessB.How to Deal with Teens' Anxiety
C.How to Treat Social Media SuitablyD.What a View of Life Means to People
