2 . On a trip to California, my family stopped for lunch. As we walked toward the entrance to the restaurant, a man, with a messy beard and dirty hair, jumped up from a bench and opened the door for us. Regardless of his _________, he greeted us in a _________ way.

Once inside, my daughters whispered, “Mom, he smells.” After we ordered our lunch, I explained, telling the kids to look _________ the dirt. We then watched other customers approach the restaurant but many ignored him. Seeing this rudeness truly upset me. The day I became a mother, I had decided to set a good example for my children. Yet sometimes when things didn’t go right, being a good example was _________. When our meal arrived, it suddenly _________ to me that I had left the car-sick pills in the truck. With the windiest trip ahead, the kids needed them, so I excused myself from the meal and went to get them.

Just then, the “doorman” was opening the door for a couple. They rushed past him without even acknowledging his _________. Letting them in first, I said a loud “thank you” to him as I went out.

When I returned, we talked a bit. He said he was not allowed inside _________ he purchased food. I went back and told my family his story. Then I asked our waitress to add one soup and sandwich. The kids looked _________ as we had already eaten, but when I said the order was for the “doorman” they smiled. When it was time to _________ our trip, I noticed the “doorman” enjoying his meal. Upon seeing me, he stood up and thanked me heartily. He then extended his hand for a handshake and I gratefully accepted. I suddenly noticed the tears in his eyes—tears of __________. What happened next drew great astonishment: I gave the “doorman” a hug. He pulled away, with tears breaking down his face.

Back in truck, I fell into deep thought. While we can’t choose many things in life, we can choose when to show gratitude. I said thanks to a man who had simply held open a door for me, and also said thanks for that chance to teach my children by example.

3 . I was blind, but I was ashamed of it if it was known. I refused to use a white stick and hated asking for help. After all, I was a teenager girl, and I couldn’t bear people to look at me and think I was not like them. I must have been a terrible danger on the roads. Coming across me wandering through the traffic, motorists probably would have to step rapidly on their brakes. Apart from that, there were all sorts of disasters that used to occur on the way to and from work.

One evening, I got off the bus about halfway home where I had to change buses, and as usual I ran into something, “I’m awfully sorry,” I said and stepped forward only to run into it again. When it happened a third time, I realized I had been apologizing to a lamppost. This was just one of the stupid things that constantly happened to me. So I carried on and found the bus stop, which was a request stop, where the bus wouldn’t stop unless passengers wanted to get on or off. No one else was there and I had to try to guess if the bus had arrived.

Generally in this situation, because I hated showing I was blind by asking for help, I tried to guess at the sound. Sometimes I would stop a big lorry and stand there feeling stupid as it drew away. In the end, I usually managed to swallow my pride and ask someone at the stop for help.

But on this particular evening no one joined me at the stop. It seemed that everyone had suddenly decided not to travel by bus. Of course I heard plenty of buses pass or I thought I did. But because l had given up stopping them for fear of making a fool of myself, I let them all go by, I stood there alone for half an hour without stopping one. Then I gave up. I decided to walk on to the next stop.

Getting their fishing gear (装备), Francesco and Brian rode to the abandoned quarry (采石场). They settled down at the edge of the bank, cast their lines, and waited patiently for a bite.

They spent hours searching for unusual rocks to add to their collection for Miss Bailey’s rock project. Suddenly, Francesco saw something unusual. “Look at that rock,” he said as he reached for it. “It looks like the trilobite (三叶虫) in Miss Bailey’s fossil book.”

Brian took a look and saw that it was a trilobite.

“We could donate it to the museum, and we’ll be on the news! We’ll be famous,” said Francesco.

Just then, they heard Emily and Anna coming.

“Quick, hide it,” whispered Francesco. “If they see it, they’ll tell everyone.” Francesco placed the stone in some tall grass on the bank. Then the boys went back to their fishing. “Let’s leave it there for now,” Brian said. “We’ll come back and get it after supper. Then we’ll decide what to do with it.”

Francesco agreed. They picked up their fishing gear and headed back.

When their paths parted, and Francesco was riding home, he thought, “I want that fossil. I saw it first. It’s mine.” He immediately turned around, rode back, picked up the rock, and put it in his pocket. He felt good riding home.

Brian could hardly eat his supper, thinking, “I want it for myself. I’m going back for it before Francesco does.” After supper, he rushed out. Arriving at the spot, he searched and searched, but the fossil wasn’t there. He knew the girls didn’t take it; they were too far away to see it. “It’s gone! Did Francesco beat me to it?” He thought angrily.

As soon as Brian saw his friend riding up the path, he shouted, “You took the fossil! YOU STOLE IT!” “So what?” Francesco said. “I found it ... it’s mine! I knew you were going to come back for it.” Francesco gave Brian a hard push. Brian stumbled over (被……绊倒) some rocks, and then fell backwards into the quarry.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章以幽默的笔调赞扬了母亲对孩子们的严格要求。

8 . I had the meanest mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal eggs and toast. Others had Cokes and candy for lunch, while I had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different from the other kids. But at least I was not alone in my suffering. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.

My mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and what we were doing. We had to wear clean clothes every day. Other kids always wore their clothes for days. We felt embarrassed because she made our clothes herself, just to save money.

The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by 9: 00 each night and up at 7: 45 the next morning. So while my friends slept, my mother actually had the courage to break the Child Labor Law. She made us work. I believed she lay awake all night thinking up mean things to do to us.

Through the years, our friends’ report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, however, would only be content with the black marks. None of us was allowed the pleasure of being a dropout.

She forced us to grow up into educated and honest adults. Using this as a background, I’m now trying to bring up my three children. I’m filled with pride when my children think I’m mean because now I thank the meanest mother in the world every day.

9 . Olly Neal grew up in Arkansas. He didn’t care much for high school. One day during his senior year, he cut class and walked into the school library. He discovered a book written by Frank Yerby. The book was The Treasure of Pleasant Valley and it attracted Neal’s attention. But there was one problem — if Neal took the book to the check out counter (收银台), his friends would know he was reading books.

“Then my fame (名誉) would be down,” Neal said. “I wanted them to know that all I could do was fight and cuss (咒骂).” Finally, Neal decided to steal the book.

A week later, Neal had finished the book. He brought it back to the library. But when he put it back, there was another book by Yerby. He took it as well. The same thing happened again. He read four of Yerby’s books that term — checking out none of them.

But Neal’s sneaky action turned out not to have been so sneaky after all. Attending his 13-year high school get-together, Neal met the school’s librarian, Mildred Grady. She saw Neal take that book. She said, “My first thought was to call him out, and then I realized what his situation was. So I decided that if Neal was showing an interest in books, I would find another one for him and put it in the same place where the one he had taken was.”

This was not an easy matter, because Frank Yerby’s books were not especially available. But the woman’s efforts paid off: Neal went on to attend law school and later became a great judge. When Grady died, Neal told the story and he said, “I thank Mrs. Grady for helping me get into the habit of enjoying reading, so that I was able to go to law school and survive.”

1. Why did Neal steal the book instead of checking it out?
A.To prove he was a skillful thief.
B.To show the book to his friends.
C.To keep being known as a troublemaker.
D.To avoid communicating with the librarian.
2. What does the underlined word “sneaky” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

C.She encouraged Neal to study law.

A.Reading changes people’s life

C.A senior student became a judge
D.Frank Yerby’s books attracted a boy

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

We have all heard the expression: “Remember to stop and smell the roses.” But, how often do we really take time out of our busy fast-paced lives to notice the world around us? I have reflected back on one situation many times since it happened and have learned several powerful lessons from it.

I’m as guilty as anyone of ignoring the world around in this manner, especially when I am driving on California’s overcrowded streets. A short time ago, however, I witnessed an event that showed me how being wrapped up in my own little world has kept me from being fully aware of the bigger world picture around me.

I was driving to a business appointment and, as usual, I was planning in my mind what I was going to say. I came to a very busy crossroads where the stoplight had just turned red. “All right,” I thought to myself, “I can beat the next light if I race ahead of the pack. ”My mind and car were in auto pilot, ready to go when suddenly my absent-minded state was broken by an unforgettable sight.

A young couple, both blind, was walking arm-in-arm across this busy crossroads with cars whizzing by in every direction. The woman was holding something tightly in her hands that sling to her chest, obviously carrying a child. Both of them had a white walking stick extended, searching for clues to direct them across the crossroads.

Initially I was moved. They were overcoming what I felt was one of the most feared handicaps — blindness. “Wouldn’t it be terrible to be blind?” I thought. Without realizing the danger they were in, they were walking right the path of oncoming cars. I was frightened for them because I didn’t know if the other drivers understood what was happening.

However, as I watched from the front line of traffic, I saw a miracle unfold before my eyes.
