3 . In 1948, Ladies Home Journal selected our family for its “How America Lives” feature. The reporter and photographer arrived at the end of May and followed all of us (Mom, Dad, my brother, sister and me) for a week, recording our every move. Everyone was pretty excited about it, especially in our town of 6,000, where things like this just didn’t happen.
Since the article would be published in early December, we had to pretend it was already autumn. The reporter asked mom to cook and serve a complete Thanksgiving meal. She told Mom to “go all out” and use her best holiday dishes for the feast.
Mom’s face fell. She didn’t want to admit that our best dishes weren’t exactly the best, let alone suitable for a national magazine. While the reporter continued with her interview, the photographer quietly excused himself and slipped away for over an hour. When he came back, he had a large box, which he placed on the floor, telling Mom to open it.
Her mouth wide open, her face lit up as if it was Christmas. Inside was a beautiful set of 12 dishes, each painted with patterns of flowers and golden brims (金边), made by the Homer Laughlin China Co. There was even a soup bowl, something we kids had never seen before. Mom was near tears as she lovingly handled each piece.
When it came time to serve dinner, Mom walked slowly from the kitchen with the lovely new plate, which contained a small “turkey” (in reality, a large chicken).
From that day on, Mom made sure they never saw the light of day unless it was a major event, though they were a must at every Thanksgiving.
I carry on the tradition, using the dishes for our Thanksgiving feast. But I serve a real turkey, and I serve it on the real Thanksgiving Day.

The Fruit of Lost Labor
On an island in the Caribbean Sea lived a man known to all as Papa Lorne, and he was friendly to everyone. The children loved Papa Lorne. They thought he must be as old as the ocean. They loved his long gray curls and the deep lines in his face. They loved especially to watch Papa Lorne’s work.
Every year Papa Lorne walked the length and breadth of the beach, carrying great baskets. In the baskets, he collected sticks, stones, shells and anything else he could find. He walked for miles filling those baskets. And then he set to work, piling all that he found. In this way, every year, Papa Lorne built a seawall.
The children called him Master Builder, for he never stopped working, and the children, especially a girl called Ruth, loved to watch as the wall grew taller and stronger and longer. “A seawall is a precious thing,” he said to the children. “It protects our beach from being washed away too quickly. This seawall is our salute to the sea. It shows the sea that we, too, are strong and firm.” And sure enough, every year Papa Lorne would complete his seawall and it would stand facing the ocean.
“It’s beautiful,” the children clapped, but the grown-ups from the village shook their heads. “It’s a beautiful folly(荒唐事),” the women said. The men sighed. “Lost labor,” they said. “You know what’s going to happen to Papa Lorne’s wall, don’t you?” Ruth’s father asked every year, but Ruth plugged her ears. She did not want to hear his predictions.
Every year the late summer storms rolled in and the waves rose up taller than 10 men, and every time those stormy waves broke Papa Lorne’s wall. Then Papa Lorne would start again.
This year, Ruth raced to the beach during a summer storm to see the wall washed away. However, Ruth saw a tear in Papa Lorne’s eye. “Why are you sad, Papa Lorne?” she asked. After a while, Papa Lorne’s wrinkled cheeks were wet with tears. “My child, I’m too old now to build another wall. Your parents were right to call this a folly.”

6 . Jennifer Keelan was a young girl who had dreams of one day attending college and living a satisfactory life. At age 2, Jennifer was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (脑瘫), leaving her using a wheelchair. Jennifer was a bright and courageous girl, but when she attempted to attend school with her friends, she was sent to separate classes for students with disabilities, regardless of talent. She found herself unable to attend some school functions, use transit systems and access government buildings. Jennifer accepted the limitations of her physical life, but not the limitations of the physical world around her.
Jennifer became active in campaigning for the Americans with Disabilities Act. She engaged in peaceful protests and, at age 7, was arrested in Montreal, a moment in history that shocked North America.
At age 8, Jennifer traveled to Washington, D.C. The shy, yet determined little girl caught the attention of the country when she climbed up the Capitol steps. It worked. Jennifer met with Congress, and President George H. W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act into law.
Jennifer remains an activist today, making sure all people with disabilities are treated fairly and have equal access to public places, schools and businesses. The only barriers that remain are those of view.
Jennifer wants all of us to know that physical disabilities are not a barrier to friendship, career opportunities or love. She graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in family and human development. She is now 39 years old and still sharing the message of inclusivity (包容性) . Ballet (芭蕾) was a way of life in Kelly’s family. Her elder sister Serena was now dancing at a top college. Though Kelly’s mom always wanted her to follow in her sister’s footsteps and Kelly herself was good at ballet, her love for ballet had faded years before and she was eager for a new challenge. One day at school, as Kelly left the dance studio she walked past the gym, fascinated by boxers (拳击手) training inside the boxing ring. She was deeply impressed by how hard they hit and how fast they moved. In fact she had long been attracted to boxing.
She pulled a piece of paper from her backpack. The big title Boxing Club Tryout (选拔) caught her eyes. That was what Kelly really wanted to do. She knew her mom had high expectations for her when it came to ballet. Tired of trying to keep up with her sister, Kelly was ready to create her own way.
The next day, she gathered her courage and told Serena about her new passion. At first Serena didn’t understand and thought she was just joking. But when she saw Kelly was serious, she replied, “You know Mom wants you to be a ballet dancer, right? Besides, boxing is only for boys, and you’re so good at ballet. Lean into your strength, Kelly.”
“But this is where I want to put my strength,” Kelly insisted, “and what exactly does ‘only for boys’ mean, anyway? Boxing is a sport for everyone!”
Gradually, touched by her determination and passion. Serena began to understand and support her. Kelly could feel it. Her sister was going to respect her decision no matter what. But that was nothing compared to the preparations for the tryout, where she was required to show her footwork and punching (击打) abilities with other candidates. Kelly wasn’t naturally good at boxing, but she had made up her mind to stick to her choice.
