1 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.

My uncle suggested that I do a work placement(实习) to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea.

I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel of how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easygoing work surroundings.

The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.

I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, but studying and training were difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.

Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I’d just returned from a beautiful autumn early-morning walk with my dog. At the front door, I dug around in my pockets for the keys. When I discovered I didn’t have them, I decided to return to the paths we’d taken. I would surely spot them in plain sight.

My little dog ran in circles of excitement that we would do a repeat of our just-finished outing. I spent an hour looking, brushing aside tall grasses, but the keys remained lost. I was beginning to get upset as I thought of the consequences of losing them, so I continued to retrace our steps, but without luck.

At home again, I pulled the backup key from its hiding place, let myself in the house, and fell on the couch tired. At my age, one hiking is usually plenty! I began to make a list of the keys. The house key wasn’t that important as I had an extra. The mail key was a big deal because getting a new one takes a lot of time. I had a spare car key, but it was sensitive, and the key chain would be expensive to replace. But the iron heart made by my grandfather was precious beyond measure. For some reason, thinking of it being gone forever made tears come to my eyes. I blamed myself for losing the keys and not being more careful. In my head, I retraced my steps again and again but finally gave up.

That night, it turned colder and we had a snow storm. I enjoyed a comfort-food dinner, played soft music, and settled into a peaceful evening. It was peaceful until I heard my car alarm coming from the garage. I rushed to the car, inserted the key in the door and finally opened it, and then moved it in the ignition (引擎) until the alarm stopped. I felt red-faced as I imagined my next door neighbors being annoyed. I went back in the house but it started again. I turned it off, went back inside, and the alarm sounded again. I repeated the process.

3 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My uncle is a successful businessman. One day, he invited me to have a dinner with one of his clients (客户) to discuss about future cooperation between them, during which he received a call. Then to everyone’s shock, he asked the waiter to check out and put an end to the trade with the client. I felt very confused. After all, it was a deal of one billion. When we got home together, he solved my doubt and told me a story about an expensive “school fee” he had paid for his dishonesty.

It was 15 years ago when he decided to return to his homeland to start a company after having got a PhD degree. Before leaving the country where he had studied for 5 years, he bought himself a Rolex watch with the savings made through years of part-time jobs and the scholarships he had got. At the airport, as was often the case, he had to accept the custom check. Of course, the watch on his wrist was on the list of things to be checked. Remembering that carrying things like this should pay some tax and worried about paying for his watch, he lied to the custom officer, “My watch is only a worthless fake (假货).”

“OK. I see.” said the custom officer and at the same time, in the presence of my uncle, he began to hit the watch heavily. “No!” Before my uncle woke up from his “smart”, the watch which cost nearly ¥100,000 had changed into pieces. “Why?” Shocked and not knowing the reason, my uncle was taken to the office for further examination.

Without finding any suspicious items, the officer let him go but warned, “Never use or carry the fake again, or you will be fined according to the law.”

My uncle continued, “Now, you see, my secretary called me saying the client used the fake to trade with X company one month ago. Such a dishonest man doesn’t have the qualification to cooperate with me.”

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容进行续写,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Shannon St. Onge, who is the director of finance at First Nations University of Canada, received a call about a check that needed her signature around 3 p.m. She rushed to the city of Regina, which is about 15 miles from her home in Pense, to get the job done. She finished her task quickly and began heading back home because she knew a huge snowstorm was coming.

However, the storm hit hours earlier than predicted, and before she knew it, she was driving straight through a snowstorm! The determined woman kept driving slowly. But eventually, as night fell, she was forced to stop the vehicle entirely.

“There was no visibility, and there was no way I was going any further, because it would have been far too dangerous,” she later said.

She called 911 for assistance, but the operator told her that because of the heavy snowstorm, many people needed help, and all the rescue workers had been sent out. What she could do was to wait on the spot. Hearing this, Shannon started to worry, “Would the gas tank last long? What if I fell asleep and the tailpipe was blocked?”

Looking around for clues about her location, Shannon made out a sign that said Bouvier Lane. She shared the location with her friends. As luck would have it, one of her friends recognized a farm near where Shannon was stuck, and said, “I know that family. I’ll contact them.”

While waiting for the rescue, Shannon saw two cars struggling on the road. She hurried forward and asked them to stop and wait.

Andre Bouvier Sr., an 80-year-old retired farmer, was enjoying a quiet evening with his 70-year-old wife when he got the call from Shannon’s friend. He didn’t hesitate before throwing on his bright yellow jacket and snow boots and headed out into the big storm, carrying an LED flashlight.

As Good As You

When Jenna’s taekwondo (跆拳道) instructor, Ms. Baroni, introduced Marti, Jenna’s best friend, to everyone, Jenna, was so excited that Marti would be taking lessons with her.

Class started with warm-up exercises, and then Ms. Baroni divided everyone into color-belt groups. Seeing Marti become red in face and play with the edge of her shirt, Ms. Baroni told the friends to work together, even though Jenna was a yellow belt and a level above Marti, making Marti less nervous on her first day. It suited Jenna fine. She couldn’t wait to demonstrate some basic kicks to Marti. Marti copied her kick as high as Jenna’s shoulder. “Great job, Marti!” said Ms. Baroni, who had walked up behind them. She then spent the next five minutes working with Marti, teaching her how to straighten her leg and snap her foot out to make the legs form a square. Jenna collapsed against the wall and watched Marti copy everything Ms. Baroni did.

The more Marti did, the more praise she earned from Ms. Baroni, and so the more half heartedly Jenna practiced. What if Marti became better than her? What if Marti became Ms. Baroni’s favorite student? “Watch your form!” Who is Ms. Baroni scolding? Jenna wondered. She turned and saw Ms. Baroni looking directly at her. Nothing could have been worse. “Jenna, your side kick could be better than that”, said Ms. Baroni with a slight frown, “You’ve memorized your form perfectly, but your moves are sloppy (马虎的). Make the legs fully extended, point the toes downward, and try again.”

At the end of the class, Jenna grabbed her bag and hurried outside to find her mom. She had planned to wait and say good-bye to Marti, but now she wanted to be alone. For the next several weeks, Marti continued to impress their teacher with her skills. And as Marti turned into a star student, Jenna became less and less excited about taekwondo.

How to Fix a Mistake

After many continuous days of steady downpour, the sun finally came out on a Sunday morning. My friend Allan and I decided to play catch in my yard. We were having fun throwing the ball back and forth.

“Run! Nice catch!” It had been days since we enjoyed ourselves. Then, I threw the ball too hard and Allan missed his catch. The ball flew like lightning, crossed the yard and hit my neighbor’s window. We heard the big sound. Crash! Smash! The window broke into many pieces.

Allan turned pale, and a look of panic crossed his face. He froze, too scared to move an inch. Without a second thought, I grabbed his hand, whispering, “Come with me!” We ran into my backyard and hid behind a stack of hay. It seemed to be a place of safety. However, my heart was still pounding hard, as if it were about to pop.

Mr. Jones, the neighbour, who was a seventy-year-old man, lived alone. Though he was poor, he was well loved in the neighborhood for he always helped those in need.

Obviously, he heard the big sound, too. He came out of his house, with a ball in his hands. It was exactly our ball! Did he recognize who the ball belonged to? With butterflies in my stomach, I breathed deeply. In the meantime, Mr. Jones looked around, trying to see who threw the ball. Of course, no one was outside. He gazed the window for a while, and then the ball. Finally, he went back into his house.

A few days later, I saw that Mr. Jones had repaired the broken glass. He was sitting outside. When he saw me, he waved at me. I felt ashamed as I waved back at him. I knew what I should do, but I was afraid to do it.

Later, my mom and I were talking and she told me about the broken window.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I grew up in a small town where primary school was a ten-minute walk from my house. When the noon bell rang, I would race breathlessly home. My mother would be home to greet me with a smile.

Our lunch time when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had painstakingly practiced my lines with me. But no matter how easily I delivered them at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained patiently that she needed a narrator and had written a narrator’s part to the play, and asked me to switch roles. Her words, kindly expressed, still hurt me, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.

I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my unease, and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard. It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine (藤) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) appearing unexpectedly through the grass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with small amounts of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the bushes. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling a blossom up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.” I immediately protested, “But I like dandelions. All flowers are beautiful—even dandelions.”

Brrrring! The bell rang as Sam tapped out a quick beat on his desk. “I’ve figured it out, finally!” He thought. He couldn’t wait to play it for Mia.

Sam and his neighbor Mia had been working for weeks on a song for Saturday’s band competition. Their song had a beautiful tune, but Sam and Mia had been struck on the ending. Just now, Sam worked it out! When Sam rushed out of the classroom, he noticed a familiar face jogging towards him down the hall. It was Mike, his best friend.

”Hey, buddy!” Mike greeted Sam with a bright smile as he always did. “Ready for some training after school? I’ve been working on my jumper.” He turned around swiftly and shot an imaginary ball into the air. Panic suddenly stroke Sam. Uh-Oh! He had forgotten all about the basketball. He was supposed to practice basketball in the court (球场) after school with Mike, which had been agreed the week before. He didn’t want to fail Mike, but he was dying to try out the new ending. Maybe if he had a reason to skip.

“Hey, Mike,” Sam said, “I don’t feel so great.” He covered his mouth with his hands and gave a small cough for effect. ”Perhaps, another time?” “Sure!” Mike said, with obvious disappointment. “Take care of yourself, OK?” Sam nodded and watched his friend dribble (运球) an invisible ball down the hallway.

“Lying was easier than I imagined,” Sam thought. “I can finish the song and Mikes feelings aren’t hurt.” The moment Sam returned home, he ran straight, towards the basement. Crash! The drum shook as Sam hit it a final time. “What do you think?” He looked at Mia hopefully. “Perfect!” She said excitedly.

“That sounded great, guys.” Mike stood on Sam’s basement steps with his eyebrows raised. “Are you feeling better now? I worried about you so much, so I brought your favorite movie to you.” Mike took out a small case.

Mary waited anxiously for her turn in the empty dressing room. Never had she been so nervous before. This competition was of vital importance to her comeback. “If I can win today,” she said to herself, “I can dance on the national stage next month.” Three months ago, her left arm was seriously injured in a car accident. After the medical treatment, she began to recover slowly. She practiced over and over again in order to regain her dancing skills.

“Hi, Mary,” in rushed her friend Jessica “How is your arm? Is it going to influence your performance?”

“I guess it can be tolerated for I am to win the match.” said Mary with a determined look.

“Admirable! But I hear that a girl called Linda is really gifted and strong. She can be your real well-matched competitor. Come on!”

After Jessica left, Mary decided to practice her most difficult spin. “If I don’t try harder, I won’t grasp this chance.” She thought. But her arm began to hurt, making her worried. “Mary, what makes you think you have a chance tonight?” she said to herself. After the pain was gone, she continued to warm up.

A slim girl hurried in and put down an equipment bag on the chair. Then, she took out her dance dress quickly and put it on skillfully. Seeing Mary, she smiled politely and said “Hi, I’m Linda. I am the next one!” Mary nodded in reply but felt uncomfortable. “This is just my competitor. Because of her, I may lose tonight.” Her mind was wandering when Linda let out a scream, “Oh, God, I can’t find my music tape!” Linda searched her bag but in vain. “It may be missing on the way.” With these words, she then rushed out.
