1 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的短文。

A Little Boy

A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people rarely visited. The house was very old and shabby and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out, he would not say hello to his neighbors or passers-by but simply just glared at them.

The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy’s parents told him to stay away from the house, and a lot of other neighborhood children were told the same thing from their parents.

Dusk found the boy lingering on and hesitating what to do. As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. “What do you want?” the old man said impatiently. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota (定额) to meet for school with selling the magazines. So he got up the courage and said, “Uh, Sir, I am selling these magazines and, uh, I was wondering if you would like to buy one from me.”

The old man just stared at the boy without a word. The boy could see inside the old man’s house and saw that he had dog figurines (小雕像) on the fireplace mantle. “Do you collect dogs?” The little boy asked. “Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here and they are all I have.” The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul.

“Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much.” The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, “No, boy. I don’t need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye.”

The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family.

2 . Sue and Johnsy had their art studio in Greenwich Village. In November,an unknown disease struck this village and Johnsy was seriously sick with it. The doctor took Sue aside and claimed, “She has one chance in ten. And that chance is for her to want to live.”

Sue came into Johnsy’s room, only to find Johnsy’s eyes were open, but they weren’t watching her.Instead, she stared out the window and counted backwards: “Ten, nine, eight, seven... ”

“What are you counting, dear?” asked Sue. “They’re falling faster now,” replied Johnsy. “Three days ago there were almost a hundred. But now there are only five left. When the last one falls, I must go, too. Didn’t the doctor tell you? ”

“Oh, I never heard of such nonsense. Now, try to take some broth(肉汤),and let yourself relax,” quickly replied Sue. But Johnsy’s mind was made up. “I don’t want any broth. I just want to see the last leaf fall.”

“Try to sleep,” said Sue. Then she went to fetch her neighbour Mr Behrman, a failed painter, to be a model for her drawing. In 40 years he had never produced the masterpiece he longed to paint. Sue told him about Johnsy’s longing to slip away like the leaves. Behrman cried with disbelief, “Such a foolish idea! This is not a place in which Miss Johnsy shall lie sick. Someday I will create a masterpiece, and we shall all go away.”

Behrman and Sue looked out of the window at the vine(藤蔓)and noticed that there was just one remaining leaf. Then they looked at each other for a moment without speaking as if thinking of something artistic. What’s more, a cold rain was falling, mixed with snow.

The next morning, Johnsy woke and asked for the curtains to be opened. One leaf remained on the vine, bravely holding on in the wind and rain. ‘‘It will fall today, for sure. And I will die with it.

That day in the afternoon, the doctor came, not for Johnsy, but for Mr Behrman, who was found lying in bed helplessly with pain, his shoes and clothing wet through and icy cold, and some brushes, paints, a lantern and a ladder on the ground.

The following day, Johnsy commanded that the curtain be raised again.

I was twenty when living away from home alone. I kept a gentle dog named Beaufort who weighed more than me and had a mouthful of sharp teeth. I felt safe going anywhere with Beaufort. In order to be free to walk Beaufort in the park during daytime, I worked the four-to-midnight shift in downtown. The only disadvantage was that I had to ride the last subway home late at night. As time passed, I developed a way to keep to myself like other passengers—avoiding eye contact and keeping reading while I rode.

One night, the station was quiet as usual. I walked over to the collector’s booth (售票亭) and pulled out a dollar. “One token (乘车币), please.” As the collector slid the token and my change under the window, he spoke, “Would you like a dog?” I looked at him in surprise, not sure whether I had heard him correctly. “Would you like a dog?” he repeated.

He picked up a little dog and set it on the counter. I bent over and it was only then that I saw the subject of his inquiry. The dog appeared to be trembling (颤抖). I was surprised. “Where’d it come from?” I asked. “She showed up this morning and has been here ever since. No one has come for her. I’ve asked everyone coming here if he wanted her. Nobody would take her.” “What about you?” He smiled, “Me? No. My wife would be angry.” I couldn’t take my eyes off the dog. The collector continued: “If you don’t take her, I’ll have to let her go when I leave.” I couldn’t believe it! He explained that it was almost closing time, he couldn’t leave her in the booth, neither could he bring her home. I, in other words, was the dog’s last hope.

“Okay, I will take her. I’d name her Phyllis”. With excitement, the collector walked out of the booth and handed me my new pet. “Thank you so much.”

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The birds were singing, and a slight breeze was blowing as I walked out onto the front yard of the house we lived in on Stuart s Lane, near Eureka, Missouri. It was a cool fall morning, and I was a St. Louis County Police Officer. My family and I lived in a house owned by my friend Dr. Wallace Stuart. He had built a stone castle near the house many years earlier and had later moved away. People continually trespassed(擅自进入)on the property and broke into the castle, so he gave me free rent to watch over it.

If anyone went up to the castle at night, our dog Samoa would begin to howl (嗥叫) like a wolf, and I would get dressed, get my gun, badge, ID, and a flashlight, and she and I would go to the dark castle. I trusted Samoa completely, and she would not make a sound until we were in a room with the trespassers. As I turned my flashlight on, she would automatically give out her blood-curling howl, which even caused the boys or men in the group to scream and there was never an incident where they tried to attack me.

On this particular morning, Samoa had begun howling, which usually meant we had trespassers; however, this time, she was looking toward the top of a hill. I examined the hillside carefully for anything she might be howling at, and then I heard a strange sound. It was like a huffing and snorting (呼哧呼哧的) sound a bear would make. I knew there weren’t any bears running free in St. Louis County, but I remembered the Endangered Wolf Center, which was within a mile and a half of our house. I wondered if they might also care for some bears, and possibly one escaped. By this time my wife had heard the sound, and she joined me on the front yard. As we stood there, she agreed the noise did sound like an angry bear.

6 . 阅读下列短文,并根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Poor little Maggie was left alone after her mother died. What’s worse, no one would like to take her home. Two years before, a fall from a window had injured her spine, and she had not been able to leave her bed since.

“Take her to the orphanage(孤儿院),” said a neighbour. Joe Thompson, farmer who happened to pass by, paused and said to him, “It’s a cruel thing to send her there.” “Oh, Sir,” Maggie cried out, “don’t leave me here all alone!”

Though not good-looking in appearance. Joe Thompson had a soft heart. He liked children. “No, dear,” he answered, “you shall not be left alone.” Lifting her in his strong arms, he took her across the field to his home.

“Who is she?” sharply questioned Mrs. Thompson upon his return home. “Wait a moment for explanations, and be gentle,” Joe said equally sharply back. He carried Maggie to a small room on the first floor, and laid her on a bed. Then, stepping back, he shut the door, and stood face to face with his angry wife.

“I can’t believe it that you’ve brought home a sick child!” Her face was in a flame. “I think women’s hearts are sometimes very hard,” said Joe. His sudden outbreak had impressed his wife and he added quickly, “This poor motherless little one needs a family. Let’s keep her here.”

The voice of the strong, rough man shook, and he turned his head away, so that the tears in his eyes could not be seen. Mrs. Thompson did not answer, but a soft feeling crept into her heart. “Look at her kindly, Jane, and speak to her kindly,” said Joe, “Think of her dead mother, and the loneliness, the pain, the sorrow that must be on all her coming life.” Mrs. Thompson did not reply, but turned towards the little room where her husband had put Maggie: and, pushing open the door, went quietly in. Joe did not follow; he felt that it would be best to leave her alone with the child.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was an evening in July. The skies were darker than normal. Rain fell in big drops, thunder crashed in and lightning flashed across the skies. I shook with cold and fear as I walked through the streams of muddy water. Cars moved slowly because of the traffic jam, while passers-by were rushing by, completely wet in the heavy rain.

Along the way, I saw some schoolchildren grasping their heavy schoolbags and heading home. As more thunder crashed and boomed, I also sped up. Near a crossing, some road repair work was left unfinished. Obviously the workers had left in a hurry because of the storm. There were a few warning signs but it was hard to see what they said and what was on the road. I took a pace towards them — there were pieces of wood and metal as well as a hole which now was half-covered with boards.

I carefully avoided the possible danger and moved on. Seconds later, I stopped as I heard some sounds. They sounded like crying. I turned around, held my breath and listened, trying to figure out where the sounds were coming from, but all I could hear was the wind and the rain. “Maybe it is just the wind,” I thought to myself and was about to leave.

“Help!” a loud and desperate scream came behind. Quickly, I turned back and traced the sound to where it had come from. My eyes fell on the place. It was horrible — one young child had fallen into the gaping hole in the road. My heart grew heavier. The boards had been moved away by the force of the rushing water and wind. I could barely see the child as it was dark all around me. I tried to save him, but all my efforts were in vain (徒劳). “Don’t panic!” I pretended to be calm and shouted at the top of my voice. “I’ll soon get you out of there.”

One day, Barton, who was trying to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door, found that he only had one coin left. He was hungry so he decided to beg for a meal at the next house.

However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman named Whitney opened the door. He changed his mind and asked for a cup of water instead of a meal. Whitney thought Barton looked hungry, so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?”

“You don't owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.” He said, “Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Barton left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but also increased his faith in God and humans. He was about to give up and quit before this point.

Years later Whitney became critically ill. Her husband, who took care of her, could not go out to work, and her poor son had to drop out of school because of being unable to afford his school tuition. He had to pick up coal in a mine near his home. Then he sold all the coal he collected for a few coins to help his parents. Fortunately, their neighbors often brought food and medicine to them, enabling them to survive the hardship of life. Besides, they also raised money for her from a fundraiser on the Internet. People donate money for her in banks, by phone using a credit card and online.

It all started at lunch. Someone asked Maria, a girl in my class, if she wanted a piece of pie. But because she’s allergic (过敏) to wheat, she can’t eat pie. Everyone was sympathetic. Then I said I was allergic to bananas. At first, everyone stared at me like I was from another planet. So, for the next ten minutes, I had to listen to all sorts of silly jokes about what bad luck I have because I can’t eat bananas.

Later, when my friend Joe and I were walking home, he began to laugh about the incident at lunch. I complained that if I was going to be allergic to something, at least it should be something I hated.

“Like what?” he asked. “Well, like...” I began, making a face, “maybe broccoli (西兰花).” Joe laughed. Then he started clowning around, pretending that he was me eating broccoli. “Oh, oh,” he groaned, scratching (挠痒) himself. “I itch (发痒) everywhere!”

When I got home, I smelled something delicious. “What smells so good, Mom?” I called out. My mother replied, “It’s dinner. I found a new recipe I think you’ll like.” After setting the table, I called my younger brother and sister. We all sat down, and Mom spooned out the vegetable. When I saw what it was, shock set in, and I was speechless.

Mom said, “Luis, eat! It’s broccoli with beans.” I couldn’t move. She said again, “Luis, eat. You know the rule.”

Mom had the rule that we had to eat everything on our plate, or we couldn’t have dessert, usually my favorite ice cream. I picked up my fork, took a tiny bit, and put it to my mouth. I put the fork down again. I thought of Joe’s crazy act and started scratching myself—slowly at first and then faster and faster. My brother and sister looked at me suspiciously.

“Luis, what’s going on?” Mom asked. I said, “Mom, I think I’m allergic to broccoli.” “Really?” she asked. I nodded, and she studied me for a moment. Then she said, “I just read an article in a health magazine. It tells parents what to do when their kids show sudden allergies to broccoli. Let me get the cure.”
