文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。J.K. Rowling的书帮助一个单身父亲改善他和女儿的关系,他在Twitter上给J.K .Rowling留言表示感谢。

2 . J.K. Rowling frequently shows there is magic every day. Her Harry Potter series has helped people through times of stress and depression and she is always there to deliver wise words of encouragement.

She is one celebrity who is very active on Twitter. So when a single dad named Matt Burke sent her a message thanking her for the series, she noticed. Her series had helped strengthen his relationship with his 9-year-old daughter Bailey.

He included a link to his article titled Being a Broke Parent. He explained how he hadn’t found a level of financial stability that allowed him to pay bills on time and take his daughter on more activities and events. The family also doesn’t have the Internet or TV, which means there’s no “digital babysitter”, and he has to rely on his own creative ways to bond with his daughter. Since he received the series, the main thing that has occupied them these days is reading books together.

Burke admits that he thought he was “too cool” for the books when they first came out and he was in his twenties, but he’s loving reading them now. “We switch off chapter by chapter reading them out loud,” Burke explains. “This not only allows her to get more used to reading aloud in front of someone, but it gets me directly involved in something she loves, and it gives me the chance to be very dramatic when I read my chapters and bring myself into the characters in the book, which has proven to be a ton of fun.”

After hearing Burke’s story, Rowling said how honored she was when Harry Potter was a part of his family’s life and offered Burke more signed books. Besides, people are also offering to send Burke more books as gifts. For Burke, this experience, far more than gifts, will be what he treasures.

Holidays are not necessarily for fun or rest. Doing something meaningful can also gain special pleasure. When the final bell rang, the students were reminded that there was no school on Monday—the Labor Day. “Enjoy your extra day off” said the teacher to her class.

An extra day off unsuited Kayla just fine. She loved breaks. She wanted to go out to play with her friends. When the school bus dropped Kayla off, she ran into the house happily.

“How was school, Kayla?” asked her mom.

“It was great, Mom. I am excited about no school on Monday.”

“You just started back to school two weeks ago. Already in need of a break, huh?” asked Kayla’s mom with a laugh.

Kayla slept in the next morning. Saturday was her favorite day of the week. I trained most of the day, so Kayla enjoyed playing videogames inside. On Sunday, her friends came over and they played basketball for several hours.

Then it was Labor Day, you know, the extra day off that Kayla was so looking forward to. But Kayla was awakened early that morning by her dad. He told Kayla that in honor of Labor Day, the family would be cleaning both inside and outside the house. Kayla couldn’t believe it. This was a holiday. A day when she was supposed to be enjoying freshly squeezed lemonade while playing in her tree house. As Kayla wiped here yes, she began to wonder if this was just a bad dream.

“Kayla, your breakfast is ready. We have a lot of work to do today. Let’s get a move on,” said Kayla’s mom. As she sat down at the kitchen table, Kayla asked her parents,

“Are you serious about working today? Isn’t Labor Day a holiday?”

“Yes, Kayla. It is,” replied her dad. “But your mom and I thought working hard today would make you appreciate why Labor Day was observed in the first place.”

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了在澳大利亚的Lajamanu下了一场鱼雨。

5 . “We’ve seen a big storm heading up to my community and we thought it was just rain,” said Japanangka, a local from Lajamanu, a town in the outback (内陆地区) of Australia. “ But when the rain started falling, we saw fish falling down. We saw some free-falling down to the ground and some falling onto the roof. It was the most amazing thing we‘ve ever seen,” Japanangka added.

Such unusual natural phenomena have been reported in the past, but Michael Hammer, an expert of fishes who have investigated such things in the past, stated that many times people just came out after the rain and saw the fish scattered (散布) everywhere. They didn’t actually see it falling out of the sky, but preferred to believe it rained from the clouds, rather than a more sensible explanation -like the fish being flooded out of a waterhole.

However, in the case of Lajamanu, there are plenty of reasons to believe that the fish did rain down during a storm. There are no watering holes near the town, and the fish picked up from the streets were recognized as spangled perch, a common freshwater fish that has no business being in Lajamanu.” “Normally, the fish is quite large and it’s not able to be drawn up out of the water and held up in the sky for very long,” Jeff Johnson said. “But clearly that’s what has happened.”

Another confusing thing about this most recent case of raining fish is that the people of Lajamanu say that at least some of the fish were alive. Dr Hammer said, “As long as they were not lifted too high and frozen mid-air, it would not be impossible for fish to keep alive as they were carried by the storm, even over long distances.”

While uncommon, raining fish isn’t unheard of. In places like Honduras, for example, it happens yearly. However, in dry places like the Australian outback, it’s surely something you don‘t expect to see, ever.

1. How does the author start the text?
A.By raising a question.B.By quoting a local’s words.
C.By listing some numbers.D.By making comparisons.
2. What is one of the reasons why people believed the fish in Lajamanu was brought by the storm?
A.The fish’s size.B.The fish’s weight.
C.The species of the fish.D.The number of the fish.
3. What is the purpose of Dr Hammer’s words?
A.To express his doubt about the fish rain.B.To explain why some fish were alive.
C.To share his experience of fish rain.D.To show his research on fish rain.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.A big storm happened in AustraliaB.Why is fish rain in Australia special?
C.Fish rain happened in an Australian townD.Why are there strange weather phenomena?

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。本文回忆了二十多年前额一个深夜,作者免费开出租车把一位时日无多的年老女士送往疗养院的过程。

6 . Twenty years ago, I was a taxi driver. One night I received a call at 12:30 am. When I arrived at the address, the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window. I waited for a while, and no one showed up. In this case, many drivers would just honk (按喇叭).

But I feared this passenger might be someone who was in need. So I walked to the door and knocked.“ Just a minute ,” answered an elderly lady. A few minutes later, a small woman in her 80’s stood before me. I helped her take the suitcase to the taxi. She kept thanking me.

Then she gave me an address, and asked, “Could you drive through downtown?” “It’s not the shortest way,” I answered. She said, “I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice (疗养院).” “The doctor says I don’t have very long time to live. And I don’t have any family left,” she continued. I quietly reached over and shut off the meter.

For the next two hours we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived. Sometimes she’d ask me to slow in front of a particular building and stare into the darkness, saying nothing.

When morning broke, we arrived at the address. She asked, “How much should I pay you?” “Nothing,” I said. She thanked me and said ,“ You give an old woman a little moment of joy.” Then behind me, a door was shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.

We’re conditioned to think that our lives center on great moments. But great moments catch us unawares. When that woman said that I had brought her a moment of joy, I had good reasons to believe that I had been placed on earth for the single purpose of providing her with that last ride. I do not think that I have ever done anything in my life that was any more important.

1. Why did the author walk to the door and knock ?
A.He thought the passenger might need help.B.He didn ‘ t want to miss any passenger.
C.He was annoyed with the passenger.D.He wanted to rush the passenger.
2. For what purpose did the woman ask the author to drive through downtown ?
A.To take a short cut.B.To return the author ‘ s kindness.

3. Which of the following can best describe the author ?

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了作者作为一个外国人在北京乘坐地铁到酒店时一路上的冒险经历。

7 . After I made it to the city center, I started to feel it might be easy for a foreigner to deal with the great size of Beijing. With growing confidence, I decided to take the subway to the hotel, not realizing that the network didn’t go that far. Impressed with the cleanliness of the station, I bought a ticket and boarded the first subway that came along.

After a few minutes I asked in English a young man seated next to me where I should get off closest to the Friendship Hotel. Wearing a smart business suit and tie, he would surely speak English, wouldn’t he? Unfortunately, he couldn’t understand me but seemed very friendly. I showed him the room card with all the information of the Friendship Hotel in Chinese characters. He looked at it, and then his eyes moved quickly to the carriage (车厢) subway map. Next, he raised three fingers of his right hand.

In Australia, raising fingers at someone is not usually nice, but this man wasn’t smiling. At the next station he showed me two fingers. Now in Australia, that’s really rude, but I got the message. When we stopped at the third station, he didn’t just point to the door, but got up, took me out of the train, and led me to the top of the stairs, and out onto the street. Then he stopped a taxi and told the driver where to take me.

All this came from a man who couldn’t speak my language, and I couldn’t speak his. I was now speechless, especially when he refused my offer of money. I felt a little embarrassed having even thought he would accept a tip.

This experience made it clear I had to learn some Chinese quickly or my adventures might start turning into misadventures.

1. Why does the author decided to take the subway?
A.Because he believed in his ability to deal with the trip
B.Because the network covered most of the stops
C.Because he lived near the city center
D.Because he had a good impression of its cleanliness
2. Having been shown the room card, the young man        .
A.still remained puzzledB.understood the author well
C.answered the author directlyD.pointed at the subway map
3. Which of the following can’t be used to describe the young man?
A.helpful.B.impolite.C.warm-hearted.D.responsible.
4. What’s the author’s purpose of writing this passage ?
A.To prove the importance of being careful
B.To introduce a young man who didn’t know English
C.To complain some cultural misunderstanding
D.To describe one of his adventurous experiences

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Ada looked through the observation window at the kids below, all waiting in line to get into the pool. She turned to her mother with an angry expression on her face. “Mom, they’re all little kids! I’m 15 already! This is ridiculous, isn’t ?”

“I know, Ada,” replied her mother, “but you’re a beginner, too, and you have to start somewhere!”

Ada had never been to a swimming lesson in her life. Between schoolwork and helping on her grandfather’s farm, she hadn’t had time for lessons. The closest swimming pool Ada had been to was the inflatable (充气的) alligator pool her mother bought her when she was five. Now that Ada was older, her mother had found a new job in the city, and Ada faced a new challenge — school field trips to the local pool.

The first day that Ada went with her class to the pool, she had no idea what she was in for. What could be so difficult about swimming? Ada confidently slipped(溜) into the water and held onto the side of the pool, expecting to be able to touch the bottom with her feet. But when Ada let go of the side of the pool, she slipped under the water—the whole pool was one big deep end! Ada threw her arm toward the side of the pool and grabbed (抓住) the ledge (池壁), out of breath. “I really can’t swim! Everyone’s going to laugh at me!” she thought to herself in a panic.

On the next field trip to the pool, Ada sat on the side of a bench, frozen with fear. She huddled (蜷缩) with a towel over her shoulders, too embarrassed to try again. When she came home, her mother noticed right away that Ada was upset. “Honey, I want you to take Bella’s swimming lessons at the local pool. Soon you’ll learn how to swim just like everyone else,” she convinced Ada, showing photos of Bella with her prize-winning students. Ada felt doubtful whether the lessons would help, but she had to overcome her fear.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者坐火车听到了一则不同寻常的火车通知。列车员快乐阳光的广播给乘客们带来了好心情。作者对列车员表示了感谢。

9 . Quietly sitting there reading, I found myself suddenly listening to the train guard’s announcements (通知). Train travelers will surely agree that when the guard (列车长) makes an announcement, whether it’s the recorded message or the guard’s message, few people listen to it, because it’s often quite dull or hard to understand. This one was different. I noticed that other passengers appeared to be listening, too. Not only that, everyone was smiling!

Why was so much attention being paid to this message? As best I can recall the guard said something along these lines, “Good Morning Ladies, Gentlemen and Children, this is the 7: 35 a.m. from Penrith to Central and you’ll be pleased to know that we are right on time. And what a lovely morning it is in Sydney today. The sun is shining, birds are singing, and all’s right with the world. I trust you have a great day wherever you’re going. Thanks for catching my train this morning and I hope to see you again soon.”

Quite a few people (obviously previous strangers) started talking to one another about the guards excellent message and how good it had made everyone feel. I started thinking about this, and then I found the young guard and said “Were you the guard on the 7: 35 a.m. from Penrith?” The guard seemed a bit stunned at first, replying, “Yes, yes.” “Well, I really appreciate your announcement. Thank you for your extremely good message, which gave me and the other passengers such a good start to the day. Please keep doing it.” I said.

There are two messages for me in what happened that day. Firstly, when people are happy in their work, it shows in what they do and say. Secondly, the story attaches much importance to the benefits that accumulate (积累) from thanking people for something they’ve done, particularly when it’s not expected. Can you imagine the conversation that guard would have when he got home?

1. Why do few train travelers listen to the announcements?
A.The messages are unattractive.
B.The guard’s voice is not clear.
C.They usually feel sleepy.
D.They are absorbed in books.
2. What does the underlined word “stunned” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Patient.B.Frightened.
C.Surprised.D.Excited.
3. What might the guard talk about with his family when he got home?
A.The beautiful weather.B.The recorded message.
C.The train from Penrith.D.The unexpected appreciation.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.An Intelligent Guard.
B.A Boring Train Story.
C.A Different Train Announcement.
D.A Lovely Morning in Sydney.

Jim is one of my close friend. Two months ago, his mother buy a computer for him as a birthday present. She hoped Jim will study hard under the help of the computer. To his surprise, Jim just wasted plenty of time play computer games every day. Now she regrets buying the computer. As matter of fact, a computer can do a lot of everyday jobs for us. It is wide used in factories, hospitals, banks and so on. Many computer scientists are now trying to make the computer to “think” like a man. In my opinion, the key is what we should use it wisely.
