As a Texan, I’m not experienced in driving in snowy, icy road conditions. So, that snowy February morning I was unwilling to travel twenty-five miles to work, hoping to receive a text message from my school telling me that school would be closed for the day.
However, the text message never came. So I warmed up my car, melting (融化) the fresh layer of ice on the window, and then left for campus, slowly driving my car along city streets. To my relief, the road workers had treated streets with sand and salt, making them less dangerous. Nevertheless, I still drove carefully, keeping a safe distance between my car and the cars in front of me. Despite all my carefulness, I was still afraid of hitting another car because of the bad road conditions.
My heart raced and I told myself, “Relax. You will be fine.”But in a flash, the clouds disappeared and blinding snow came. My heart beat even faster. Within minutes, the blowing snow mixed together with the existing snow. Visibility was instantly reduced to near zero. Directional signs quickly were out of sight. The road itself disappeared, as did all the cars around me. I had no sense of direction, and no idea what I should do.
Suddenly, I hit a large piece of ice and my car began sliding. I was scared out of my mind. There were too many vehicles running slowly on the street. A sense of complete helplessness and fear enveloped me. I held the steering wheel (方向盘) harder, staring at my sweaty, trembling (颤抖的) hands, unsure what to do because I didn’t have the skills or experience to control myself out of the slide, let alone avoid crashing into other cars.

It was a beautiful May morning. As usual, I started my day by sitting outside breathing the fresh air as I read my book and drank my coffee. Afterwards, there were two things I was determined to do. First, make sure my husband got our small Christmas trees down from the attic(阁楼) and, second, take several bags of clothes, blankets and comforters to the donation center. I had been faithful in doing that every year, but for whatever reason, I had delayed this year and the bags were now piling up and overflowing.
After reading for a while, I went into the bedroom to ask my husband to bring the trees down. He was asleep so I figured I’d surprise him and get them down by myself.
I went to the garage to access the attic storage and moved our tall metal ladder into place. I had to move the bags of clothing and blankets out of the way, determined once again to get those to the donation center.
I climbed the ladder, and two steps from the top I was able to reach up and push open the attic door. Then, with my feet on the very last step and part of my upper body in the attic, I saw my trees. I awkwardly raised my leg to climb onto the attic floor. Looking down, and then looking up again, I decided that this was actually too much for me. I should wait for my husband to get them.
As I stepped down, my foot missed the shaky ladder’s step. With one foot swinging and the other on the top step, I grabbed(抓住) the attic floorboard and called my husband. Unfortunately, he couldn’t hear me. As I went to take another step down, the ladder suddenly came out from under me, loudly crashing onto the concrete(混凝土的) garage floor, leaving me hanging from the attic with sweaty hands. In that second, which seemed like a century, I prayed and then called my husband.

That afternoon, they had to share their table with another person. That person was a young lady in her twenties. After eating, she went to the restroom. Without realizing, she had left her cellphone on the table. Five minutes later, she came out and walked out of the cafe without looking back.
Mary saw the cellphone on the table. She quickly told Keith, “Keith, the girl left behind her cellphone.”Keith looked at the cellphone. It took his breath away. It was one of the latest models on the market. Keith had always wanted a cellphone. But his parents had told him, “You don’t need one. You can always use the house phone.” He stared at it for some minutes. Then, he said slowly, pausing on every word, “I want to take the cellphone.” Mary could not believe her ears. She only stared at her brother, “You can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it?”
After making the decision, Keith quickly got the cellphone and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Mary’s hand and led her out of the cafe quickly.
Once back home, Keith locked his room door with trembling (颤抖的) hands. Inside his room, he took out the piece of beauty. Oh, he liked it so much. He had his own cellphone. Soon, he was polishing it happily. But Mary told him, “Keith, you cannot keep the cellphone. What will you tell our father about this? He will ask you how you got the cellphone.” Keith said quickly, “I will say a friend lent it to me.” Mary said, “Now you are lying too. Oh dear! When had Keith turned so dishonest?”
Then, Mary saw a house phone number on the cover of the cellphone. “This is the girl’s phone number. Why don’t we just call this number? We will talk to her and ask her to come and take back her cellphone,” she was trying to talk some sense into him.

It was a beautiful day for sightseeing. We were a group of students just out for some fun. The weather was perfect for a picnic, so when lunch time came, we set our sights on a small park. Since we all had different things to buy, we decided to get what each of us wanted, and meet back on the grass in a few minutes.
When my friend Joy headed for a hot dog shop, I decided to go with her. We watched the seller put together the perfect hot dog, just the way we wanted it. But when we took out our money to pay the bill, the seller surprised us.
“You are the first customers to visit, and the first order is given to you for free,” he said.
After we thanked him, we joined our friends in the park, and dug into our food. But as we talked and ate, I was distracted (分心) by a man sitting alone nearby, looking at us. I could tell that he hadn’t showered for days. Another homeless person, I thought, like all the others you see in cities. I didn’t pay much more attention than that.
After we finished eating, we packed our lunch bags and prepared to throw them away.

“What’s that noise?” Meg asked her eight-year-old daughter, Haley. Looking down at Haley’s shoes, Meg realized that they were too old.
Meg and Haley were on their way home from school. It had just stopped raining, but water on the road had damaged the girl’s shoes.
Meg immediately took her daughter to a store to buy her a new pair of sneakers. Although she just had enough money for groceries, she thought getting Haley a new pair of shoes was more important.
“That one, yes, those pink shoes beside the blue shoes,” Meg instructed the shop assistant.
“How about these?” Meg heard Haley say.
Turning around, she saw Haley checking shoes in the section just for boys. Meg hesitated and approached her daughter.
“Mom, I want these limited-edition sneakers for Buddy. He always tells me how he wishes to wear such shoes,” Haley said.
Meg was shocked. Not only was she unable to afford two pairs of shoes, but she wondered why Haley was interested in getting her classmate Buddy a new pair.
“Buddy is from a very poor family. Poorer than us. His shoes are torn and ugly. Everybody laughs at him. Please, can we buy these shoes for him? You can buy mine later,” Haley added.
Meg thought for a while and decided it would be best if she bought her daughter shoes for now. “You will be sick if you keep wearing your wet, torn shoes. I’m sorry, honey, but you need a new pair,” Meg insisted.
Haley sighed heavily and agreed. She was not excited to see the new pair of sneakers her mom had bought for her.
As Meg and Haley left, Bob, the shoe store owner who knew Meg well, walked to the limited-edition sneakers and sighed, too. He had overheard everything and knew what it was like to be poor. When he was a little boy, he had also been laughed at for his ugly shoes and it was his own experience that had inspired him to own a shoe store that sold footwear for people from all walks of life.

10 . The owners of a Dairy Queen in Phoenix remain puzzled—and slightly amused—as to why someone would steal their huge red spoon that decorates their restaurant.
“What are they going to do with such a huge spoon?” Puja Kalra, one of the owners, said on Wednesday. “But getting another spoon made, delivered and then fixed would cost us over $7,000.”
Puja Kalra and her husband, Raman Kalra, said the spoon was stolen sometime between late Friday and early Saturday. The 4.5-meter-tall spoon stood against the side of the building with the handle fixed to the wall. Their security camera caught two people taking it down very quickly and carrying it away on a motorbike. The couple reported the theft to Phoenix police and no suspects have been identified yet.
The Kalras, who are Indian immigrants, moved to Phoenix from Minnesota in 2007 and decided to join the fast food chain, Dairy Queen, which now owns 34 restaurants across the US that carry a standardized menu and decoration. This Phoenix one is the only Dairy Queen with the towering red spoon.
“With the spoon big enough to hold a small child, it was a popular photo spot,” Puja Kalra said. “Now, it looks empty and incomplete without that spoon.”
Meanwhile, they’re trying some creative strategies to spread the word about the spoon theft. Workers at the Phoenix location will start wearing “Where’s my spoon?” T-shirts with a red spoon and the Dairy Queen logo (徽标). They’ll also send out similar posters all around Phoenix.
The reward? One Blizzard treat from every flavor of the standard summer menu.
In all seriousness, the couple would love to have the red spoon suddenly be returned. “We appeal to the persons. This spoon is too big to eat anything,” Rarnan Kalra said. “We want you to bring it back. We will not ask any questions.”
Dairy Queen is known for sending out free samples of their featured Blizzard ice cream in summer to promote sales.
