1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One morning in spring four students were walking to school.

There had been a rain, and the ground was very soft. Water was dropping from the trees, and the grass was wet.

The four students walked along, one behind another, because the pathway was narrow (狭窄的) and the mud (泥) on either side of it was deep. They walked, talked and laughed.

As they were passing through some small trees, they heard a great fluttering (拍翅膀) over their heads and a weak chirping (鸣叫) in the grass by the roadside.

“Tweet! Tweet! Tweet!” came from the leafy branches above them.“Cheep! Cheep! Cheep!” came from the wet grass.

“What is the matter here? ” asked the first student, whose name was Speed. “Oh, there are two young birds. Maybe the storm has blown two of the little ones out of the nest. They are too young to fly, ” said the second student, whose name was Hardin.

“What a pity! They'll die down there in the grass,” said the third student Martin.

“Oh, well! We still need to hurry to school. We're going to be late,” said Speed. “Why should we bother? ” After Speed's words, the first three students walked on, talking and laughing as before.

5 . There was once a boy called Mario who loved to have lots of friends at school. However, he wasn’t sure whether or not his classmates were his true friends, so he asked his grandpa. The old man answered, “I have just exactly what you need; it’s in the attic (阁楼). Wait here for a minute.”

Grandpa left, soon returning as though carrying something in his hand, but Mario could see nothing there. “Take it. It’s a very special chair. Because it’s invisible (无形的) it’s rather difficult to sit on, but if you take it to school and you manage to sit on it, you’ll be able to tell who your true friends are.”

Mario took the strange invisible chair and went to school. At break time he asked everyone to form a circle, and he put himself in the middle, with his chair. “Nobody move. You’re about to see something amazing,” Mario said.

Then Mario tried sitting on the chair. He missed and fell straight onto his backside. Everyone had a pretty good laugh. Mario wouldn’t be beaten. 文章大意:本文是记叙文。文章讲述了一位怀孕的母亲和年幼的儿子在洛杉矶机场独自旅行因为孩子哭闹而感到无助时,陌生人为处于困境的妈妈带来善意和力所能及的帮助。

8 . In most situations, the responses of bystanders (旁观者)like negative body language, uninvited comments or pieces of advice on a child’s angry behavior can add to the stress of the situation. But sometimes bystanders’ understanding, and sometimes their words or actions can make a positive difference. One mom experienced this first-hand.

This mom was obviously pregnant and traveling alone with her young son at the Los Angeles International Airport. Then things took a turn for the worse.

The boy, about 18 months old, according to Beth, a Facebook user, was running all over the place, kicking, screaming, and lying on the floor, unwilling to get aboard the plane. His mom did her best to calm him down, but Beth said, “She couldn’t pick him up because he was so upset. He kept running away from her, then lying down on the ground, kicking and screaming again.” Finally, the mom was at her wits’ end. She sat down on the floor next to her son, buried her face in her hands, and began to cry.

Then the most amazing thing happened.

A group of six or seven women, Beth included, circled around the mother and son and did something to help. Beth sang him the “Itsy Bitsy Spider”. Another offered an orange. Another gave him a toy she had on hand. Another helped get his cup out of Mom’s bag. Yet another tended to Mom by offering her a water bottle. With the help of these women, the kid and his mother calmed down and were able to board the plane.

And then life moved on. All of the strangers went their separate ways without speaking of what had happened. But Beth said it was something she’d never forget. “We were strangers, gathering to solve something,” she wrote. “It occurred to me that a circle of passers-by, with a mission, can save the world.”

1. What are the bystanders supposed to do according to the first paragraph?

10 . One day, 12-year old Sean Redden logged on to the Internet and went to a popular chat room. Just as he was about to sign off, he saw the name of someone he'd never seen there before, Susan. Her brief message was “Would someone help me?”

Sean typed back, “What's wrong?” A moment later he received this message, “I can't breathe. Help me! I can't feel my left side. I can't get out of my chair.”

At first, Sean thought pretending to be paralyzed (瘫痪) was a bad joke. Then he wondered what if she really was sick. “Hey, Mom,” he called. “There's a kid here who's sick or something.” Sharon looked at the computer screen. “It's not just some game, is it?” she asked.

The message was not a joke. “Susan” was actually a 20- year- old student, working late at night at a college library near Helsinki, Finland-almost 7, 000 miles away from Sean's home in Texas. Texas police called the international telephone operator and asked to be connected to the proper agency (机构) in Finland. The call was connected to a nearby rescue station.
