Morty was checking out his library books when it caught his eye-a poster for Adventure Rocks Kids Camp. “Check this out!” Morty called to Ben and Fred as he grabbed three brochures and dashed to catch up with his best buddies. They all stopped, books in hands, to stare at the pictures of kids flying above canyons suspended from zip lines. They instantly believed the brochure’s headline: Summer won’t be complete until you Take it to the Limit at Adventure Rocks Kids Camp.
Ben broke the silence, “We have less than two weeks until registration opens, and it says the camp fills up fast.” Then an idea popped into Morty’s head. “Why don’t we sell lemonade and snacks by the side of the road? We can pool our allowance savings for the camp.” “That’s a great Idea,” Ben said.
The sun had barely come up on Saturday morning when the kids set up their business. They chose a spot, asked permission from the homeowner, and then asked to use her garden hose for water to make lemonade.
Their business went smoothly until Ben announced that they had a comparatively small stock of lemons shortly after noon. Morty decided to make their stock go further. “Fred, when the jug gets down to one-fourth full, just fill it to the top with the water hose.” Morty was thinking out loud, “I’ll change the sign and charge 30 more cents for each cup of lemonade.” Their business went on and the three were secretly proud of the little tricks they had done.
Just as Morty finished refilling the jug with water for the third time, a vehicle rounded the comer. Morty saw the minivan with his father at the wheel and his family inside. They pulled up to the sidewalk, and his brothers and sisters jumped out, each clutching a coin or two. They were eager to support their brother’s bustling business. Morty’s family bought the last of the brownies and drank the last drop of watered-down lemonade.

One young academically excellent person went to apply for a managerial position in a big company. He passed the first interview and then the director did the last interview to make the last decision. The director discovered from the CV that the youth's academic achievements were excellent all the way, from the secondary school until the postgraduate research. Never did he have a year when he did not score.
The director asked, "Did you obtain any scholarships in school?" The youth answered, "None."
The director asked, "Was it your father who paid for your school fees?" The youth answered, "My father passed away when I was one year old, so it was my mother who paid for all my school fees."
The director asked, "What did your mother do?" The youth answered, "My mother worked as a clothes cleaner." The director requested the youth to show his hands. The youth showed a pair of hands that were smooth and perfect.
The director asked, "Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before?" The youth answered, "Never. My mother always wanted me to study and read more books. Furthermore, my mother can wash clothes faster than me."
The director said, "I have a request. When you go back today, go and clean your mother's hands, and then see me back here tomorrow morning."

Maria knew her neighbor’s routine. Every day, Mrs. Hernandez walked her dog Marisol past Maria’s house, usually just as Maria was hurrying for school in the morning and again when Maria was returning in the afternoon. Mrs. Hernandez, always smiling, always stopped to chat. Maria enjoyed their small talks. Then one day Mrs. Hernandez discovered that Maria like homemade cookies. From then on, she gave Maria a box of her specially-made cookies with a note that read, “To Maria—my good friend!”
One cold November morning when Maria left for school, she didn’t see Mrs. Hernandez and Marisol. Maria didn’t know why. That afternoon her neighbor again failed to appear at the regular time. Maria became a little worried. As she walked by Mrs. Hernandez’s house, she looked at the house carefully and saw nothing unusual. “Mrs. Hernandez just isn’t home today, I guess,” she spoke to herself.
Later that night, Maria told her parents and her brother Ramon about not seeing Mrs. Hernandez. She asked them if they knew where their neighbor had gone. While Maria was worried, Ramon thought that nothing was wrong. Maria’s mother also tried to make Maria feel better: “She probably went to see a doctor. Or maybe she’s in another city visiting her daughter.” Still, Maria was not satisfied. She asked her parents if perhaps she should knock on Mrs. Hernandez’s door.
Maria’s father was not worried either. He thought that they shouldn’t bother Mrs. Hernandez. “Maria, honey, I’m certain she’s just fine. We needn’t spend time worrying about her.”
The next morning, Maria still didn’t see Mrs. Hernandez. Maria became even more worried. Instead of waiting for the school bus, she rushed back home. Maria’s mother was washing the breakfast dishes. “I didn’t see Mrs. Hernandez again this morning, and now I’m terribly worried about her,” Maria said. “She didn’t talk about going away, so I want to check on her before going to school. I hope you’ll come with me.”

A water bearer had two large pots, each hung on each end of a pole which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, and while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to the master's house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.
For a full two years, this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots full of water in his master's house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect to the end for which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do.
After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you". The bearer asked, "Why? What are you ashamed of? " The pot replied, "For these past two years I am able to deliver only half of my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your master's house. Because of my flaws, you don't get full value for your efforts".
The water bearer felt sorry for the old cracked pot, and in his compassion, he said, "As we return to the master's house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path." As they went up the hill, the old cracked pot took notice of the sun warming the beautiful wild flowers on the side of the path, and this cheered it somewhat. But at the end of the trail, it still felt bad because it had leaked out half its load, and so again it apologized to the bearer for its failure.
Paragraph 1:
“Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of your path, but not on the other pot's side? ” The bearer said to the pot.

7 . I’m racing on the 1,500-metre track (跑道) with my friend, Mary. I’m tired and my throat is giving me much pain. I want to stop but a voice repeating in my head keeps me running: “No one knows what the result will be. Everything is still possible.” Today, I have to fight with myself.
Nine years ago, when I was a 6-year-old girl, my mother took me on a trip. We went to the foot of a high mountain which she told me that we would climb. I had never done this before and the thought of it made me very happy.
At the beginning, I climbed fast. But half an hour later, when I was thirsty and tired, I just stopped and sat upon the ground, completely silent. My mom came and sat next to me.
She said, “Get up and go on!”
Almost shouting, and with tears in my eyes, I replied, “No, I don’t want to do this. It’s too tiring and I am thirsty. I don’t like it. I want to go back home now.”
Patiently she explained, “Listen, my dear. If you try your best, anything is possible. If you don’t try, your dreams will never come true. However hard the task is, we must finish it. You will never know how beautiful the scenery looks unless you reach the top of the mountain.”
Hearing her words, I stopped crying and started to climb again. Finally I made it; I did reach the top of the mountain and enjoyed the glorious view.
Today I’m on the racing track. I’m going to keep running because I know its always worthwhile (值得做的) to finish.
And in the end I managed it; I got through the finish line. Although it was really difficult and I did not win, I did make it. As former Indian President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam (1931-2015) said, “Never stop fighting until you arrive at your destined (命定的) place — that is, the unique you.”

8 . Located in the Bahamas, Andros Island is also known as “The Sleeping Giant”,yet with only about 8.000 people living on it. Now the island has a new luxury resort Caerula Mar Club- which opened this February. The once-abandoned property was discovered by a well- known HGTV reality star couple who transformed it into a hotel. The Canadian design duo Bryan and Sarah Baeumler were vacationing in the Bahamas in the summer of 2017 when they discovered a once-abandoned resort. They instantly decided to purchase it with hopes to transform the 10-acre beachfront property into a luxury hotel.
However, they had no idea how much the investment would end up costing them. Here most supplies had to be shipped in, and the property was in bad shape. The budget for the remodelling should be around $ 4 million, but they've spent well over $ 10 million. What's worse, in the fall of 2019, category 5 Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas, and their employees and friends were affected.
Finally, several months later, as they prepared to open the resort to the public, the Coronavirus pandemic (大流行病)struck. They'd just been fully booked throughout the fall and winter months when the new disaster stopped everything as the Bahamas were put on lockdown.
With tourism opening up again, new plans are now for an October launch, but they're just taking things one day at a time. "I think at the end of this pandemic, well find many people are searching for a different experience,” says Bryan. "Instead of crowding into large resorts, they'll be going to properties where they can meet people, connect with the locals and experience nature. Our hotel is just such a place.”
Now the couple is focusing on the future while creating new development for visitors. “We certainly have plans to responsibly and sustainably develop the island that will help support the local economy says Bryan.

Six minutes to six, said the clock on the wall in the railway station. The tall young soldier lifted his sunburned face and narrowed his eyes to note the exact time. His heart was pounding with a beat. In six minutes he would see the woman who had filled a special place in his life for the past 13 months, the woman he had never seen, yet whose written words had supported him unfailingly. He clearly remembered every single word in her letters that helped him go through many tough moments and renewed his strength.
Now he was going to hear her real voice. Four minutes to six.
A girl passed close to him, and Frank started. She was wearing a flower, but it was not the little red rose they had agreed upon. Besides, this girl was only about 18, and Hollis had told him she was 30. “It doesn't matter,” he had answered, “I'm 32.” But actually he was only 29.
For 13 months she had faithfully replied. Now he believed that he loved her and that she loved him.
But she had refused his pleas (恳求) to send him her photos. She had explained: “If you have a real feeling for me, what I look like won’t matter. So, don't ask for my picture. When you come to New York, you shall see me and then you shall make your decision.”
One minute to six... Frank' s heart beat even faster. A young woman was coming towards him. Her figure was long and slim; her blond hair lay back over her delicate ears; her eyes were as blue as flowers; her lips and chin had a gentle firmness. He started toward her, forgetting to notice that she was wearing no rose, and as he moved, a small, charming smile curved her lips. “Are you going my way, soldier?” she murmured. He made one step closer to her. Then he saw Hollis.
