A man was really worried about his son, who was sixteen years old     1     had no courage at all. So the father decided to call on a Buddhist monk     2    (train) his child.

The Buddhist monk asked the boy’s father to leave his son in the temple and     3    (say) that he would make him a man of     4    (brave) within three months. However, you can’t come to see him during that period.

Three months later, the boy’s father returned. The Buddhist monk arranged a boxing match between the child and a     5    (profession) boxer (拳击手).

Each time the boxer hit the boy, he     6    (fall) down, but at once the boy stood up.

Several times later, the Buddhist monk asked, “How do you like your child?”

“What     7     shame!” the boy’s father said. “I never thought he could be so     8    (easy) knocked down. I shouldn’t have left him here at all.”

“I’m sorry that’s what you see. Don’t you see that each time he falls down, he stands up again instead of     9    (cry)? That’s the kind of courage you wanted him to have.”

If each time you are knocked down and you have the courage to stand up again, then you can be proud     10     yourself.

Once there lived a rich man     1     wanted to do something for the people of his town.     2     at first he wanted to find out whether they deserved (值得) his help.

In the centre of the main road into the town, he placed     3     very large stone. Then he     4    (hide) behind a tree and waited. Soon an old man came along with his cow.

“Who put this stone in the centre of the road?” said the old man, but he did not try to remove the stone. Instead, with some difficulty he passed around the stone and continued on his way. Another man came along and did the same thing; then another came, and another. All of     5     complained about the stone but not tried to remove it. Late in the afternoon a young man came along. All over the world there are people who have achieved great things. Yet many of these people have done so with one     1     (amaze) difference: They have physical disabilities. Take Jim Abbott for example, he succeeded     2     becoming a pitcher (投球手) for the USA at 1988 Summer Olympics.

    3     (bear) without his right hand, Jim Abbott was a talented athlete and wanted to be a baseball pitcher, even though being able to use two hands is     4     (extreme) important in playing baseball. A pitcher needs to throw the ball with one hand and wear a baseball glove on the other—something     5     Jim couldn't do.

From the time he was four years old, Jim worked at overcoming this challenge. He practised quickly     6     (move) the glove to his good hand after he had pitched the ball to his father. He was always forcing     7     (he) to get that glove on faster and faster.

Jim made up his mind     8     (play). He loved the game     9     much that he invented his own method to do it with excellence. He went on to be a Major League pitcher for the New York Yankees, and today young athletes everywhere     10     (inspire) by him.
