It was Mother’s Day morning last year. My five-year-old son, Tenyson, and I     1     (leave) the supermarket after shopping when an old woman fell over at the entrance and hit her head on the ground. Her husband was with her, but the woman was     2     (serious) hurt and shaking with pain. At the first sight, my son is full of     3     (curious).

At the front of the supermarket a charity (慈善) group was selling flowers to raise funds. Tedyson suggested that we should buy the lady a flower. “It’s just like we give her     4     hand and it will make     5     (she) feel better.” he said. I was amazed that he’d come up     6     such a sweet idea. So we went to the flower seller to buy a flower for the lady.

By then rescuers had arrived, and were attending the     7     (injure) woman. As we walked up to her, my son became frightened by all the blood and medical equipment, which is beyond description. He said he was so afraid that he had trouble     8     (go) up to her. That was why he asked me for help.

Instead, I gave the flower to the woman’s husband and told him, “My son was very upset for your wife and bought her this flower to cheer her up.” At that moment, the old man was moved add said, “Thank you so much, you have a good son. Happy Mother’s Day to you.”

The man then gave his wife the flower,     9     (tell) her who it was from.     10     badly hurt, the old lady looked up at Tenyson with thanks in her eyes and gave him a little smile.

I recently heard a story about a famous scientist. When he     1    (ask) why he was able to succeed, he gave the answer. It all came from an experience with     2     mother when he was about two years old. “I was trying to get a bottle of milk from the fridge when I lost the bottle and it fell, spilling(溢出) the milk all over the floor—a sea of milk! Instead of     4    (punish) him, his mother asked him to play in the milk for a while. When Jack was a small boy, he was once asked to give a speech about “A Big Challenge in My Life”. To talk before the whole class, he was     1     (terrible) shy. After five more years there, George left to start his own company, finally realizing his childhood dream.

The story of The Farmer and The Mule (骡子) makes us smile.     1    , it does have wisdom in it. It reminded me about defeating adversity (逆境).

    2     we handle adversity determines our success in life. One of my     3     (thought) on adversity is, “Adversity is a fact of life. It can’t     4     (control). What we can control is how we react to it.”

When     5     (face) with adversity, we can give up the negative attitude. Or we can look on adversity     6     an opportunity to find other ways to do things. We should be     7     (determine) and persistent. It all comes down to your choice and it is a choice of attitude!

You see, the farmer thought the mule was not worth     8     (save) when it fell into a well accidentally, and he just put it out of its misery by burying it. Despite the farmer’s best efforts to bury it, the mule resist (抵抗) until it was able to climb out of the well on top of all the dirt that was thrown in after it.

The mule, despite the fact that it was     9     (constant) in a deep well, would not give up. The mule simply     10     (shake) the dirt off little by little, never giving up the will to live by climbing out of the well.

Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at Stanford Hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liza who was suffering     1     a rare and serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion (传输) from her five-year-old brother,     2     had amazingly survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies (抗体) needed to beat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked     3     boy if he would be willing     4    (give) his blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate for only a moment before making a     5    (decide) and saying, “Yes, please do it if it will save Liza.”

As the transfusion progressed, he lay in a bed next to his sister and smiled,     6    (see) the color returning to her     7    (cheek). Then his smile faded and his face     8    (grow) pale. He looked up at the doctor and asked in a frightened voice, “Will I start to die right away?” Being young, the boy didn’t understand the doctor     9    (correct), he thought he was going to have to give     10    (she) all his blood.
