There were two carpenters (木匠) in a village.     1     of them were good at their jobs. The country’s king made a     2     (decide) to hold a contest to find out which one was better. The winner would become the official royal carpenter.

The carpenters     3     (give) three days to carve (雕刻) a wooden mouse. The one     4     carved the more lifelike mouse would win.

The first carpenter carved a mouse with lifelike features. The second carpenter’s mouse, however, looked quite rough. In fact, it hardly looked     5     a mouse at all. The king and his ministers agreed that the first carpenter was the winner.

The second carpenter said the judgment was     6     (fair). “We should ask cats. Cats can recognize mice much better than humans.”

Meet Harpreet Kaur Chandi, also known as Polar Preet, the 33-year-old who has been making headlines all over the world after    1     (become) the first woman of color to complete a solo expedition across Antarctica.

“The reason    2    I chose Antarctica was that Ⅰ didn’t know much about it, and I thought, if I could do something that pushes me so far out of my comfort zone,    3    (hopeful) it’ll inspire other people    4    (do) the same,” said she.

As a part of her tough expedition, Preet endured temperatures as low as minus 50 degrees Celsius, and wind speeds of up to 96 kilometers per hour. She    5    (walk) around 27 kilometers a day, pulling a 90-kilogram sled containing her equipment.

“It was generally windy, and there were only two     6    (day) that I can remember when there was slight wind. A father-son pair became the focus of attention during Sunday’s Xin’anjiang Marathon in Jiande in Zhejiang Province. The father, 45- year- old Luo Shujian,     1     (run) the marathon while he was pushing a three-wheeled cart carrying his 13-year-old son Xiaobai.

Due to severe illnesses, Luo’s son requires lifelong care. With help from charities, Luo’s family took Xiaobai to see experts on the management and     2     (treat) of LGS(癫痫综合征), and Xiaobai’s condition improved after taking medication.
