A wise and wealthy man bought a beautiful house with a huge garden. However, not all people     1     (feel) happy for him. A man who disliked him lived in one of     2     old houses next to him. He constantly tried     3     (make) his fellow neighbour’s stay in the beautiful house as terrible as possible. And he     4     (regular) threw garbage under his gate and did other bad     5     (thing).

One fine day, the wise man woke up in a good mood (情绪). He opened the gate and a big bag full of garbage     6     (see) right in the doorway. He emptied the bag of garbage and cleaned the bag. Then he filled the bag     7     many freshly-picked apples and went to his neighbour’s door.

    8     (hear) a knock on his door, the neighbor excitedly thought, “I finally got him! ” He answered the door, ready to quarrel with     9     (he) wealthy neighbour. However, the wise man gave him the bag of apples, saying, “The person     10     is rich in something shares it with others.” The neighbour felt ashamed and said sorry to the wise man.

Peter lived in a village. He was always upset and treated others     1     (bad). He enjoyed himself by making other     2     (villager) unhappy. So the whole village avoided     3     (he) as much as they could. On the day when he turned eighty,     4     unusual thing happened. Everyone     5     (hear) the words. “Peter looks happy today. Instead of     6     (say) something bad, he smiles to everyone he meets.” When the whole village got together, Peter     7     (ask) why. I visited Luanda for the first time this April as my parents were living there. Since my Mum volunteered at a foundation, she took me there to work with her for     1     few days. As I’m only 16, and have no younger siblings, I have never had any experience of working with children before. I had no idea     2     I could spend those days,     3     (especial) since I don’t speak Portuguese. However, I don’t think my experience could have been any better—from the moment I arrived     4     the day I left. I was constantly     5     (speak) to and hugged by all the children. Even though they knew I didn’t speak Portuguese, that didn’t stop them from     6     (talk) to me, and we were able to communicate without a problem. By the end of my trip, I could tell that I     7     (make) progress in my Portuguese thanks to them. On Thanksgiving, we had lots of food     3     (leave) over. I thought about the old lady. She might be still hungry. So I packed the food up and rode over to the Fifth Street. It was a cold night. She     5     (dress) as she always was. I went to her and said, “I’ve brought you some food. Would you like some turkey and apple pie? ”

However, the old woman didn’t seem to be very     6     (excite) about this. She looked at me and said, “Oh, thank you very much, but someone     7     (give) me food earlier and I’m quite full now. Why don’t you take it to someone else who     8     (need) it?”

Her manners were gracious (亲切的). I was the person who didn’t know what     9     (say). An old lady whose life was     10     (bad) than most of us still thought about others. Why don’t more of us do that?

Varatha Shanmuganathan is an 87-year-old woman in India. She has become the     1     (old) person to get a Master’s degree at Canada’s York University. When she isn’t dancing or singing with her grandchildren, she’s busy     2     (realize) her many dreams.

This is not Shanmuganathan’s first Master’s degree. After earning her Bachelor’s degree, she returned to Sri Lanka     3     (teach) Indian history and English.

In 1990, she moved to London to teach English as a second language and received her first Master’s degree from the University of London.

When she found out the university offered free tuition     4     senior citizens, Shanmuganathan said she     5     (immediate) knew it was her last chance to make her dream of studying political science come true. She began her studies in 2019 and     6     (continue) throughout the pandemic (流行病).

“She will act as a powerful role model for     7     (woman) of all ages,” York University President Rhonda Lenton said.

Despite her achievements, Shanmuganathan said she is not quite finished yet in     8     (educate). Her next plan is to write     9     book about post-war Sri Lanka.

“Find out what you really want to achieve and pursue it until the end. Think of something     10     not only interests you, but is also beneficial to others. Go on after it, get it, do it, achieve it,” Shanmuganathan said.

This summer we went to visit my father in Scotland.He lives about 3 hours from Glasgow, but had arranged for us     1     (meet) him in the Highlands, a little place called Acharacle, near Fort William. We drove up from Yorkshire where I had visited my sister, spent the night in Glasgow, and continued our journey the     2     (follow) day.

Acharacle is a very remote, beautiful area. It’s a tiny village, with houses     3     (hide) all around it in the trees. It is very close to     4     sea, so that is where we spent most of our time.Several beaches there are unspoilt, and all of     5     are so clean. I took Robert and Domini with me to one of the     6     (small) beaches to play in the white sand. As soon as we got there, they ran over to a rock pool and discovered a school of trapped fish.It was as if they     7     (discover) treasure. They could scoop up     8     (hand) of them with delight.I even did. They stayed in this rock pool for what seemed like ages，    9     their sleeves were wet and they started to get cold. Then we walked along the beach, collecting shells which we now have at home. Catching fish in Scotland is fun,     10     (especial) when you can do it with your hands.

A policeman on the beat walked along the street as he always did. It was     1    (bare) ten o'clock at night. When he had walked halfway around a certain block, the policeman suddenly slowed down. In the doorway of a store stood a man,     2     an unlit cigar in his mouth. As the policeman walked up to him, the man told him he came a thousand miles to keep an appointment made twenty years ago. The policeman told the man the restaurant where they would meet had been torn down. The man in the doorway struck a match and lit his cigar. The light showed a pale face, with keen eyes, a square jaw and a little white scar near his eyebrow. His scarfpin was a large diamond, oddly set.

That night twenty years ago, he dined with Jimmy Wells, his best friend. They were just like two brothers. The next morning he     3     (leave) New York and travel to the west to make his fortune. They promised no matter     4     their conditions might be or from what distance they might have to come, they would meet here. They figured that in twenty years each of them ought to     5    (build) their life and made their fortunes. They kept     6     touch for a year or two, and then they lost contact. But the man was confident that Jimmy would come. Finally, the policeman said goodbye to him.

About twenty minutes later, a tall man in a long overcoat, with collar     7    (turn) up to his ears, hurried towards him. The tall man called him Bob. Though he realized this “Jimmy” was a little taller than his old friend, he could not help     8    (outline) the history of his career in the west. Then the tall man suggested going to a place and having a good talk about old times.

The two men walked up the street, arm in arm. When they passed a drug store, with brilliant electric lights, each of them turned to stare at the other's face.The man from the West stopped suddenly and released his arm. “As I suspected, you're not Jimmy Wells,” he said, impatiently with anger. “Twenty years is a long time, but not long enough to change a man's nose .” In fact, the tall man was a policeman and Bob, the criminal,was under arrest. The police man gave him a note from Patrolman Wells. The man from the West    9    (fold) the paper. The note was rather short.

"Bob: I was at the appointed place on time. When you     10    (strike) the match to light your cigar I saw it was the face of the criminal wanted in Chicago. Anyhow I couldn't arrest you myself, so I got a plain-clothes man to do the job. JIMMY."

I used to love English and dreamed of being an English teacher one day. So sometimes I sat in the class for English majors. One course I chose was English education for primary and middle school. The teacher was a friendly middle-aged man,     1     sense of humor impressed me a lot. After class,    2     I attended his class was what he hoped to know. I told him it was because I wanted to be an English teacher in the future though English was not my major. I supposed it was one of the best     3     (occupation). He encouraged me. I considered him to be such a     4    (rely) person.

I often imagined teaching my students English in class. Time flew by and the semester（学期）soon came to the end. I wrote an article about middle school English teaching and gave it to him at the end of the last class.

When the new semester began, I had to pay more attention to graduating and planning my future career. I was depressed because I had no interest in my major (computer science) and had failed several exams.    5     was my concern how I could change the situation.

At that time,    6    (think) of him and the article I wrote, I went to see him. To my surprise, he said my article was good and he wanted to submit it to a magazine. Then he asked me about my studies. I could tell that he cared about me and my studies.

On the day before my departure（离开）from school, I went to his office and told him I was leaving. He told me to keep working hard and that he hoped I     8     (get) a good job soon. Soon I found a job as an English teacher in my hometown. It is     10     (essential) important for me. Now I’m happy, but I often think of him and I know my thanks for him still live in my heart.

Then someone advised him that he should try to help others to have peace of mind.

Then, the new friend made a     6     (contribute) to charity. He gave away all his pension (退休金). He said he lived with his son and didn’t need the money. He enjoyed     7     (talk) and accepted my offer of some desserts (甜点). After a few minutes, the desserts for his son     8     (pack) too and he gave me a silk scarf as     9     gift. I am grateful for this chance, which makes me know that if you want peace of mind, do be helpful to others. This chance also reminded me     10     a valuable idea: To practice peace!
