1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Late in December, a heavy storm hit the town, and the worst blow fell on a little church — a huge flake of plaster (石膏) fell out of the wall in the church. Sorrowfully, the pastor (牧师) swept away the mess, but he couldn’t hide the break. He was so upset. “Christmas is only two days away!” he said.

That afternoon the sad pastor attended a sale,at which a beautiful gold-and-ivory tablecloth got his attention. It seemed from a bygone era (时代). “Who, today, had any use for such a thing?” The pastor came up with an idea and paid six dollars for it. Back at the church, the pastor pinned the cloth on the wall. It completely hid the break. Happily, the pastor continued to prepare for Christmas.

Just before noon on the day of Christmas Eve, when opening the church, the pastor noticed a woman standing in the cold at the bus stop. “The bus won’t be here for 40 minutes!” he called, and he invited her into the church to get warm. The woman said that she had gone for an interview for a job as a teacher, but was turned down because of imperfect English.

When the woman sat down in the church, she noticed the tablecloth. She walked to it and touched it with her fingers. “It is mine!” she said in surprise. She lifted a corner and showed the pastor a name on the cloth. “My husband had the cloth made especially for me years ago! He had my name embroidered on it.”

For the next few minutes, the woman explained that she was from Austria and she and her husband left the country because of the war. On their run, they were separated accidentally and never met each other again. Hearing of her experience, the pastor tried to comfort her and urged her to take the cloth with her. But the woman refused.

As Christmas Eve started, it was clear that the cloth was a great success. It had been designed to look its best by candle light. After the service, people told the pastor that the church looked beautiful.

2 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was an unusually hot day. Extremely tired after football practice, I headed to the bus stop to wait for Bus 112 which would take me home. I was beginning to slowly and gently fall asleep when I saw the bus arriving. The sun was in my eyes and that was probably the reason why I got onto Bus 113.

I was glad to get a seat. Within minutes, I was slumped against the window, fast asleep. When I opened my eyes, it was dark outside. I was the only passenger left on the bus. I could not recognize the part of town we were passing through. I pressed the bell and the bus stopped. I planned to jump across the road and catch a bus going in the opposite direction. However, I found myself on a quiet street with a row of shops that were all closed. I beat myself up for not asking the driver for directions.

As I was wondering what to do, a motorcycle came down the road. The rider looked at me as he passed and then stopped a short distance away. I went to him and asked him how to get back to Taman Klang Utama. He smiled, tapping the back seat and said that he would send me home. Without a second thought, I climbed up behind the rider. He turned the motorcycle around and headed in the direction I wanted. We traveled for about 15 minutes and the surroundings still looked unfamiliar to me. The rider made a few turns and I knew I was hopelessly lost. I asked him where we were going. He did not answer but increased his speed. Alarm bells started to ring in my head.

On a Friday night, a poor young artist stood at the gate of the New York railway station, playing his violin. The music was so excellent that many people stopped to put some money into the hat of the young man.

The next day, the young artist came to the same place, and put his hat on the ground gracefully Differently from the day before, he took out a large piece of paper and laid it under his hat. Then he began to play the violin. It sounded more pleasant than ever.

Soon he was surrounded with people who were attracted by the words on the paper. It said, “Last night, a gentleman named George Sang put an important thing into my hat by mistake. Please come to claim it soon.”

After about half an hour, a middle- aged man rushed through the crowd to the violinist and said, “Yes, it’s you. I knew that you were an honest man and would certainly come here.” The young violinist asked calmly, “Are you Mr. George Sang?” The man nodded. The violinist asked, “Did you lose something?” “It's a lottery ticket,” said the man.

The violinist too out a lottery ticket on which George Sang’s name was seen. “Is this it?” he asked. George nodded and too the lottery ticket and kissed it, then danced with the violinist.

4 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a Saturday in June, 1988. Out of a 16-year-old’s early tiring summer, I had set up a tent (帐篷) in our rural yard and intended to sleep in it, but I stayed in the house to finish watching the Lakers’ play-off game. It was almost midnight and Dad had been asleep upstairs for hours when someone knocked at the front door. It never happened to me not to answer it.

To my surprise, it was a girl about my age with a bloody cut on her head. “Hi. I’m Maria. What’s wrong with you?” I asked her with concern. Awkward and embarrassed, she replied: “I’m Jane. I…” she hesitated and then asked me carefully, “May I stay here for the night? I’ll be off tomorrow morning” Seeing her uneasiness, I comforted her, “Take it easy, Jane. Stay with me tonight.” I invited her into the house. Looking around, Jane appeared to have calmed down. “Let me treat your injury first,” I said and she agreed.

I cleaned and bandaged (包扎) her injured head and then gave her some bread and meat to eat. “Want to sleep in my tent?" I asked her and she nodded. Having left her in the bathroom, I went to look for another sleeping bag When I returned, Jane was seated on the sofa, her face clouded by sadness. Walking across the dark yard, I went into tent with Jane. We lay down side by side. Caught by curiosity and concern, I turned over again again, wondering what had happen to her and how she came here. Jane seemed to have sensed that and started to speak. Jane’s father died of cancer years before. Her mother did some cleaning jobs to raise her. Money was tight but her mother tried to do what she could to satisfy Jane. Several weeks before, Jane accidentally saw a fine white dress in the store window, which she fell in love with at first sight. She excitedly told her mother about that, who promised to buy it as her birthday gift. From then on, Jane was looking forward to it.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When I was a boy of nine, I used to help Mrs. Long, a retired art teacher who lived across my home. She paid me very little for the help, but she taught me how to paint and promised me, “When Christmas comes, I shall have a present for you.”

I kept wondering what it would be. The boys I played with had baseball gloves, ice skates and bicycles. I hoped that Mrs. Long would buy any one of them for me.

“But it would hardly be ice skates,” I reasoned with myself. “An old woman like Mrs. Long wouldn’t know much about ice skates.”

I also ruled out the bicycle because she was just a retired art teacher in the local school and could not afford it.

On my last day at work, Mrs. Long said, “You’ve been a very good boy. On Christmas Eve I’ll make a present for you. Please come to my house and collect it.”

“Since she is going to have the present in her house, and since she will make it, unquestionably she is going to give me a pair of baseball gloves,” I thought. Actually, I became so convinced that I could imagine myself playing baseball with my friends in those gloves.

A day before the Christmas Eve, I could wait no longer and presented myself at the door of Mrs. Long’s house and said, “Can I have my present today, Mrs. Long?”

“I’ve been waiting for you,” she said, leading me into her house. She sat me in a chair, disappeared to another room, and in a moment stood before me holding a package which under no circumstances could hold a bicycle or a pair of skates, or even a baseball glove.

I lifted it from her hand and found it was extremely light.

“What is it?” I asked with disappointment on my face.

“A kind of magic,” Mrs. Long said. “It can give you whatever you dream of if you have learned how to use it.”

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was a cold yet sunny Saturday morning in February. Dad’s New Year’s resolution had been to get fit. Mum pushed him out of bed and told him to go jogging by the river. Later, after a nice lie-in, she went downstairs in her dressing gown and found the kids watching TV. She turned it off and said she was going to do something really special for Dad’s birthday. If they overheard anything, just promised to keep it secret.

Jenny looked at Mum with a puzzled expression on her forehead and promised they wouldn’t say anything whatever happened. But Jenny reminded Dad’s birthday was in June and it might be a little too early to get all steamed up about it.

Silent for a moment, Mum said she was not getting everything ready but just wanted to spare enough time for preparation as this year it’s a bigger deal than usual. Dad was going to be 50.

“50! Gosh, that’s half a century,” spluttered Gerry. “I knew he was old, but I didn’t realize he was ancient!”

Indeed, that was why Mum started planning a special party for him. Mum talked with grandma about the plan because her house was the only one in the family that is spacious enough for all friends and relatives. Grandma quite agreed and also started preparing.

“But you know how Dad feels guilty to bother others. You’ve got to admit,” reminded Jenny. Thinking over the special occasion, Mum was continuing with her secret when one evening, Dad was sitting at the dinner table and he suddenly slapped his forehead, “I just realized that I am going to be 50 in June. Let’s just quietly forget about it. I want to mourn (哀悼) the passing of my youth in private.”

“Oh, come on Dad, don’t be such a spoil-sport!” begged the kids, hoping to give mum a hand.

Realizing no more chance to hide the secret, Mum carefully worded her thought and shared her plan of having a little party at grandma’s house. Dad was stunned (震惊的) to no reply.

Jimmy is an automotive mechanic (汽车修理工), but he lost his job a few months ago. He has a good heart, but he always feared applying for a new job.

One day, he gathered up all his strength and decided to attend a job interview in order to support his family. His appointment was at 10 a.m. and it was already 8:30. While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. Jimmy immediately went up to lend him a hand. When Jimmy finished working on the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Jimmy said there was no need to pay him, that he just helped someone in need, and that he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said. “Well. I could take you to the office for your interview. It’s the least I could do. Please. I insist.” Jimmy agreed.

Upon arrival, Jimmy found a long line of applicants waiting to be interviewed. Jimmy still had some grease (油腻物) on him after the car repair, but he didn’t have much time to wash it off or have a change of shirt. One by one, the applicants left the interviewer’s office with a disappointed look on their faces. Finally his name was called. The interviewer was sitting on a large chair facing the office window. Rocking the chair back and forth, he asked. “Do you really need to be interviewed? Jimmy’s heart sank (低落).” “With the way I look now, how could I possibly pass this interview” He thought to himself.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I had just walked in the door after dropping off the costume I had made for a friend’s daughter when I noticed the light blinking on my answering machine. It was my friend saying, “I know you worked hard on the costume and it looks very nice, but Janet doesn’t like all those decorations. Could you change them?”

Annoyed, I started to call her back-until I suddenly thought of Grandma’ love and what she had once done for me long ago when I visited her in New York City.

It was in the summer when I was eight. I could still see the chalk on the sidewalk marking a game of hopscotch (跳房子) outside her building. As I entered, I could smell the pine oil the cleaner used to wash the hall floors. Flying upstairs, I knocked on Grandma’s door. Grandma had something special planned every day. She had saved a few coins so we could go to a picture show. One day we threw bread to pigeons; another day we watered the evergreen on the fire escape.

At the end of the week, Grandma decided to curl my hair. She told me I was going to look like Shirley Temple. She spent a long time on each curl, and I could tell she enjoyed styling my hair.
When she was finished, she sighed with delight. She was so proud. She had me stand on a chair to look in the mirror. My heart sank. I looked ridiculous.

“You can go out and play now,” Grandma said, smiling.

I nodded and slowly walked down the stairs. I looked out the small window in the door and could see the neighborhood kids playing hopscotch. My best friend, Ducky, spotted me and began to jump up and down. She waved to me to come outside, but I couldn’t move. I knew everyone would laugh at the curls. At the same time I couldn’t go back and tell Grandma how I felt.

“I’m going to school today!” announced my little brother, Trevor, bouncing to the breakfast table.

Mom looked at me. “Isn’t it great, Annie? You'll both be at the same school! And I can’t help remembering your first day to school when I had to calm you down by blowing kisses.”

Actually, it was not great at all. School used to feel like my thing. But now he would sit in my old classroom, with my old teacher. Enough! I hated to see the naughty Trevor as part of my school life.

As we arrived at the school gate, Trevor turned to me and asked whether he could play with me during the break, worried and hesitant. I shook my head and reminded him of the school rules: You small kids play in the kindergarten area. I stay on the big playground!

I pulled Trevor forward and led him to his classroom, where he was greeted by his teacher, Mrs. Morena, “Hello, Trevor! Want to come and meet the other kids?”

Trevor nodded and let go of my hand. I disappeared in a flash, excited to join my friends. When the bell rang, I was given a seat by an open window where I could see the kindergarten room if I looked outside. I faced forward, trying to focus on what the teacher was saying. For no reason, a question continuously crossed my mind: How was Trevor?

During the break, I forgot all about Trevor. It was great to be back at school! I was running to the slide when a loud cry rang out across the playground. It sounded familiar.

I looked to the kindergarten area. There was Trevor sitting in the sandbox, tears on his face.

“I want to go home!” he howled. Mrs. Morena was talking to him, but he was still crying.

I took another step toward the slide. Then Trevor cried again. My feet turned, and I was running toward him. But there was a fence between the kindergarten area and the big playground, and I couldn’t go where he was.

10 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Dad and Madison were walking through the party store, gathering decorations for Madison’s upcoming birthday party.

“But I don’t want to invite Lucy Gilbert! I don’t like her!”

“Madison, you are being unreasonable. If every girl in your class is invited to a party but you, you’ll feel left out. It would be a big mistake to not invite Lucy to the party. ”

“She never even talks to me! ”

Dad sighed and moved down the aisle. “Lucy is a new girl in class. She just moved here a little over a month ago. Think about how that must feel. She doesn’t know one single person in the school. She left all of her old friends behind and now she has to try to make new friends. Your party will be a great chance for her to get to know everyone. ”

“No, it won’t. She will probably sit in the corner and not talk to anyone. Every day at lunch she sits all by herself. She wants to eat alone!" Madison shrugged and rolled her eyes.

“Madison, I’m done discussing this. You will invite every girl in your class, including Lucy Gilbert!"

On Saturday morning, the family blew up balloons and decorated the house cheerfully. Madison was dressed beautifully for the day, wearing her new blue dress. It was not typical of her to dress herself like this. She usually wore sports clothes because she loved to be outside riding her horse Star with a lead rope(缰绳).

Madison greeted her friends at the doorstep, picturing various presents her friends would bring her. In the meanwhile, she was wondering whether Lucy would ruin the party if she came. Anyhow, all the girls she invited came finally, including Lucy.

The girls had a fantastic time by singing and dancing while Lucy sat in the corner silently alone. Later, all the girls gathered around the table as Madison opened her presents. Opening them one by one, Madison thanked her friends, with a bright smile on her face.
