On a cold windy day, a poor boy tried to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door. Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. What’s worse, he found that he only had one dime left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn’t eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house. Hesitantly he knocked at a door, thinking about what to say when it was opened. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. “What can I do for you?” asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while, “Would you please give me some...a drink of water?” the boy dared not to look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to give him energy so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied with a warm smile on her face. “My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.”Deeply moved, he said sincerely, “Then I shall thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in the whole human race. Years later the young woman became critically ill. However, the local doctors were unable to give an effective medical treatment. Walter couldn’t hear him. “Santa is getting old. He doesn’t hear so well. Come closer and tell me again,” he said happily. The little boy came very close and said, “Santa, please bring me a grandfather for Christmas.”
Walter was surprised. He looked at the little boy’s mother. “Yes,” she said. “Timmy wants a grandfather for Christmas.”
“Why do you want a grandfather for Christmas, Timmy?” asked Walter.
“My Dad is dead. I don’t want a new dad. But it’s only Mom and me. It’s quiet. So I would like a grandfather.”
Walter was worried. Of course children don’t get everything they ask for. But this little boy was so serious, and his mother looked so sad.

In the morning. Janey was putting old bottles into a box. On the TV, a reporter was at the Ritesville art gallery. He was talking about the lost painting and the broken glass vase. Janey glanced at a photo of a blue vase.
At that time Harry wasn’t in his room. He was talking on his telephone. Janey was looking for old newspapers. Every Friday morning, she took then from every room in the house. Then later, the newspaper recycling truck arrived.
Janey opened Harry’s door and looked into his room. She always took his old newspapers or bottles for recycling. She found a newspaper under Harry’s bed. She put the old newspaper into a black recycling box. Then she ran from the house and saw the truck. “Wait!” she said. And she quickly gave the box to one of the men.
Harry came back to the house. Ile saw the recycling truck, and he saw Janey. “The newspaper! Oh, no!” Harry, cried.

She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded out of her. “I’m going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I’ve won lots of competitions. But when I’m in a race, I’m not really thinking about winning. I’m just loving the feeling of being in the water…” Jenny laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence. Turning back to the minor, Jenny saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee’s watch really did have something magical.
The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Walker ask cd who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody moved, Jenny slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Walker could say something, there was a shout “She’s stolen in y watch!” Lee said angrily. “It went missing at school yesterday.”

On the way, I met a huge snake, I tried to run away from it as fast as my tired feet could carry me. And in my fright and hurry, I forgot to keep my eyes on the rainbow, and when, at last, I looked for it, it was gone! Even worse, I couldn’t see my brother anywhere in sight. l sat down and burst into tears, for I felt that I had lost all my treasures. I had nothing but muddy feet and a wet and torn dress. So I decided to go back home.

So if anyone understood why Emily could not walk through the park, it was Heidi.
Emily was a sweet girl except that she was frightened at dogs! So she had to avoid certain places where they might be. She was always conscious of where she went and got quite good at finding ways to avoid encountering any of them. She planned ahead good and proper before she headed outdoors or to a friend’s home. She could even spot one a mile away!
But the strange thing was, she didn’t dislike dogs. In fact she was quite fond of the idea of them. She was feeling that her fear was preventing her from living life to the full. She was starting to become tired of constantly avoiding her big fear. She wanted so badly to be able to pet a dog like “normal” people did. She tried to overcome her fear, but it usually ended in tears and a feeling of disappointment.
As her best friend, Heidi couldn’t stand by. She believed that power of friendship could help Emily overcome the fear.
