1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

We moved to Jabalpur and it was to be my first day at the new school. I was hesitant to go because I had no friends there. Besides, my limp made me mindful. I was worried that my classmates might laugh at me. It would be terrible when they made fun of me. “You are a brave girl. I’m sure your classmates will understand. Now, run along. Daddy will take you to school,” said my mother.

On reaching school, my father took me to the headmaster’s office. Later, I was taken to my class. On the way I noticed some children staring at me and laughing. I was miserable. My limp became more pronounced and I wanted to go home. But with mother’s words in mind I managed to walk to the class.

The teacher introduced me to the class and said, “Anuradha, go and sit on that chair in the front row. The girl next to you is Mala.” She was good-looking and I liked her. During lunch break, I asked Mala, “Where do you live?” Mala did not answer. I thought she had not heard me. I was about to repeat my question when Mala began to tell other classmates how she had learnt to swim. I moved closer to her and said, “I also swim.” She just ignored me. I felt abused. What hurt me most was that they went to play basketball during the games periods, saying I could not play.

When I reached home that afternoon, I burst into tears when hearing my mother’s first question “How was your day, Anu?” I told her my classmates didn’t like me and that they didn’t allow me to play basketball with them. Mummy gathered me in her arms. “Now, Anu, don’t cry. Give them a couple of days. Do your work well and be friendly and you’ll see things will work out differently.” Seeing me depressed, she added, “You are a good swimmer. Why don’t you go swimming during the games periods? I’ll write a permission letter to your teacher.” At this, I jumped with joy.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was April 5th, a lovely spring morning. The air was fresh. The trees were green and the birds were singing happily. Police officer Tidwell left the station just after 8 a.m. on such a beautiful morning. He had spent a boring night on duty and was looking forward to his day of rest. By habit he took a short-cut down the path behind Dugby Hall road. It was quiet at this time of a day. Tidwell walked slowly, enjoying the fresh morning air. But after a minute or two he saw a man climbing down a drainpipe (雨水管) from an open bedroom window of Number 29. In silence, Tidwell crept into the garden. Tidwell watched for a while and waited for the man to climb down slowly off the wall. The man reached the ground and was dusting himself down when he felt his arm caught.

“It’s 8:15 on a Sunday morning,” said the officer, “and this sort of thing seems an unlikely adventure at such a time. Would you mind explaining?” Tidwell spoke with a serious voice of a police officer, holding the man tightly at the same time.

The man was obviously scared. He struggled for a while and then said, “I know what you are thinking, officer, but it isn’t true. This is a funny mistake.”

Tidwell did not believe his words at all but he said to the man, “It’s part of my job to take an interest in unusual events. I think you’ve just left this house in a manner other than the customary one. That may be quite innocent, but I’d like to make sure.” Tidwell took out his notebook and a pen. “Name, address and occupation and then, please, tell me your story...”

“Charlie Crane, lorry driver, from Nottingham, 51 Breton Street. My story…”

“Yes. What were you doing like a fly on that wall, Mr. Crane?”

He bought some medicine and hurried to his village.

On his way home he saw a person lying on the ground. He placed his baskets on the ground and was going to help the person to get up. At that time he found it was a dead man and there was much blood on his body. He was so afraid that he ran away quickly, without taking the baskets with him.

The next afternoon the famer was sent to the police station. Having shown the baskets, an officer asked, “Are these yours?” “Yes, sir.” the farmer answered timidly (胆小). “Have you killed the man?” “No, no, sir.” the farmer said in a hurry. “When did you see the dead man?” “About seven last evening.” “Did you see who killed him?” “No, sir.” The officer brought out a knife and asked, “Have you seen it yet?” “No, sir.” The officer became angry and told the policemen to beat him up and sent him into prison. Having held the interschool (校际) story tell g championship for the past two years, I was the shining star of my school. When it came to choosing the right candidate (候选人) to participate in such competitions, I was always the first choice. Naturally, I was once again selected to represent my school in the approaching contest this year.

Upon hearing the fact that I was chosen again, my classmates and friends acknowledged that I would undoubtedly be the champion again. Consequently, I became conceited (自负的). I was so proud that I ignored the importance of practicing for the contest.

A week before the contest, my teacher Ms. Sara asked, “Selena, would you like to stand in front of the class to rehearse (排练) for the contest?” She had tutored me in the past two competitions and knew how important practice was. “Just imagine you are on the stage

in the audience,” she added.

“I’m sorry, Ms. Sara,” I replied. “I have a bit of a sore throat.”

This was usually the lie I would tell whenever my teacher requested me to practice in front of the class. I always found excuses to avoid doing it because I believed that I was the best and therefore the practice was unnecessary. On one occasion, I event old Ms. Sara not to worry too much as I was well prepared for the contest. In fact, I did everything but practice my script (讲稿) .I only managed to glance briefly through the story the day before the contest. As the best storyteller among the students of the local secondary schools, I was too vain to practice and expected everything to be fine.

The contest was being held in the local community hall. On the day of the contest, the hall was crowded with people. My schoolteachers and principal were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates. I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. Those who spoke before me did extremely well. On seeing their fascinating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. My palms (手掌) sweated heavily and I started to feel nervous.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.

“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird?” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”

Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.

“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.

“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.

Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got full marks on the spelling test!”

Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.

After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribusion” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-O-N-T-R-I-B-U-S-I-O-N,” he whispered. He spelled it wrong.

“What am I to do?” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I’m a master at spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong, I’ll have to give my prize back, or I will become an example for telling a lie.”

Staring at the full marks written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”

Slowly,Peter raised his hand.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Huron, Ohio, was where I’d spent my twenties, working on a ship out on the Great Lakes. My wife and I started our family there, and later we came back to Huron to retire. Then, during the final stages of construction on our new home, I had difficulty breathing. The doctor determined I needed an open-heart operation. I was admitted to a hospital in Sandusky.

The night before my operation, I was so worried that I couldn’t sleep. I lay in my hospital bed, praying (祈祷) and thinking about the events in my life. I remembered how I had loved Huron and its people. I remembered a Christmas many years ago...

The shipping season had been good to me, so that winter I decided to buy some Christmas gifts and help out a family in town. “I know a family that would appreciate a visit from Santa Claus,” the owner of store said. “A woman with six children just lost her husband.”

The store owner and his wife helped me wrap (包) some presents and gave me the family’s address. That evening I delivered the packages. A little girl with shining brown eyes and the sweetest smile answered the door. “Santa asked me to bring these gifts to you and your family,” I said.

The girl’s eyes lit up even more. “Tell Santa thank you from Dorothy,” she said. I never saw her or her family again, but they, and the other folks I met in town, helped give Huron a lifelong place in my heart. A heart that now needed fixing, badly.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“I hope Santa will bring me the doll for Christmas,” Jenna Lee whispered. She and I pressed up our faces to the toy store window that separated us from the doll inside.

Jenna was my neighbor. She and her family had only arrived from South Carolina a few months ago, without her father. I didn’t know the particulars, only that they were under difficult circumstances. Mum often gave them some necessities and comforted her mother.

“It’s Chatty Cathy doll. If you pull the string on her neck, she’ll talk to you,” I explained.

“She can say 11 things like ‘I love you’and ‘Tell me a story’.”

“I’ve never seen anything like her,” Jenna said, rubbing (擦) the glass window with one finger. “She would be nearly as good as having a real live friend like you.”

Chatty Cathy was on every girl’s Santa list. But I didn’t tell Jenna what I knew for a fact: Santa wasn’t real. Knowing the truth about Santa did have one advantage. It gave me the idea to search the house for presents that might be hidden away for me until Christmas morning. In fact, deep in the back of mum’s closet (衣橱) I’d found my Chatty Cathy doll. On Christmas morning She would be mine! I could hardly wait. Until then, Chatty Cathy would remain my secret.

“She’s the only thing I wrote down on my list for Christmas. What’s on your list this year?” I asked Jenna.

“I don’t make lists,” said Jenna, her eyes never leaving Chatty Cathy’s face. “We’re grateful for whatever Santa leaves in our stockings (长袜). I just hope Santa can find us this year.”

“Santa knows everything,” I comforted her. Walking home, I thought about what Jenna had said about being grateful. My mum always told me to be grateful for whatever happened. Now I was grateful for having a Chatty Cathy doll in her pink and orange box, just waiting for me to open her up on Christmas morning. The thought of it made me burst with excitement.

8 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was somewhere between spring and summer, and my mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then, I was 13 years old, and always felt unhappy with Mom. But I didn’t know that this trip was going to be a special one.

A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose heavenly fragrance(香味)filled the car. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom stopped the car. “What are you doing?” I shouted, fearing that the car had broken down and we’d be trapped there, so far from home. But that wasn’t the case. My mom jumped out of the car, grabbing(抓)the flowers from the back seat. “It’ll just be a minute,” she called back through the open windows.

I impatiently looked at the side of the road before finding a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, a little annoyed, as my mom reappeared ——empty- handed.

Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, “Do you know someone there?” She shook her head. “Then what did you do with the flowers?” She smiled slightly, “I gave them to the receptionist (前台接待员).” “What?” She laughed at my confusion. “I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially those who haven’t gotten any in a while.”

I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we continued our driving, I spoke again, “Did you leave your name?” To this, she answered instantly, “No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me.”

Suddenly, still thinking about Mom’s deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn’t know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by, since we had seen so few people along the way.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I lived with Lassie, a black and white dog, sitting with her head on my lap, her intelligent, brown eyes staring at me as if to say, “Have a good day.”

Lassie arrived at my front door four years ago. Because I couldn’t find its owner, I had to keep it. Throughout the years, she was with me, proving to be a superb “judge” time and time again. I never knew if it was as a result of her sense of smell or sound or sixth sense. However, whatever it was, she definitely had a talent humans lacked. She would either wag the tip of her tail a couple of times to indicate that the visitors were acceptable, or slightly curl her top lip, which told you to be cautious. Her judgement was always accurate. Her gift was never more apparent than tonight.

The doorbell rang. I decided not to answer it. It rang again more insistently this time. Someone just wouldn’t go away. Still I hesitated. On the fourth ring, with Lassie by my side, I finally answered the call. I was getting very nervous for there stood a “monster”. The man had big eyes with a twisted body under a heavy overcoat, and his head leaned slightly forward.

“May I use your phone?” The deep voice came from somewhere back in his throat. Although the request was polite, his tone was rough. I shrank back as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a piece of paper. He took a step forward and further asked me for permission. Again, I refused his request. Thinking he might try and force his way in, I looked at Lassie to see if she was ready to defend our home. Surprisingly, she sat by my side, the tip of her tail wagging.

“You’re crazy, Lassie,” I thought to myself. But there was no denying sign. Based on past experience, I trusted her judgement. The man explained to me that he lost his phone by accident.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I remember the hot summer when my friends and I discovered ice cream sandwiches at the corner store. They were ten cents apiece, a lot of money back then. I don’t remember how we came to buy one and taste it, but we were mad after that. Of course, none of us had any money. Whether we rode our bikes, or played ball, or sat and played cards, we talked and dreamed about those soft, creamy sandwiches.

My dad worked nights, coming home to join us for breakfast, and then sleeping till late afternoon. When he came home one morning, I heard the jingle (叮当声) of change in his pants and something ugly slowly came into my mind. That change was just what we needed, what I had to have. All day long I kept coming into the house and listening at his door. When I heard his sleeping sounds, I cracked the door. And there hanging at the foot of the bed were those pants. I slipped in and took a handful of change. It was enough for my friends and me to buy an ice cream sandwich, which we ate like greedy pigs. And I became a hero to my band of friends.

That went on every day for about two weeks. I had gotten good at slipping in and slipping out, and then ran to my friends and we headed to the store.

One day there was no change in dad’s pocket so I felt for his wallet, hesitated a moment, and then took out two whole dollars. I had been okay with taking the change, but those dollars made my face hot. Even before we began enjoying sandwiches, my stomach felt sick. The importance and joy I had felt buying for my friends was gone. If dad knew what I had done, he’d kill me.
