It's quite impressive to see Canada geese flying into the clouds. They live to be around 25 years old and are very loyal. They never forget their first home. No one knows this more than my family.

In 2000, when I was seven, my parents and I came back from a T-ball game one late spring afternoon. To our surprise, two adult geese and a baby goose were in our driveway (车库前的私 人车道).The adults were shocked by us and flew away, but their baby was too young to fly and couldn't follow. We are no strangers to the ways of wildlife, so we knew to avoid contact with the baby, hoping he could join his parents.

Hours passed, and night fell. The tiny little thing was wandering around our yard, unaware of what could happen. It was clear that the baby needed protection, warmth, and food to make it to the morning, so we brought him onto our back porch (门廊)and set up a wire fence to enclose and protect him.

We all pretty much slept with one eye open till morning. And then another morning. And another. Each day, we tried eagerly to get the baby back to his parents, who kept coming to our yard. He wouldn't go to them, though, and they wouldn't come close enough to claim him. The baby goose had clearly decided we were his new family and we gave him a name - Peeper, because he would follow us around the yard making a peeping (唧唧叫)noise, nonstop.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months, until almost a year passed. Peeper slept on our back porch in typical goose fashion. Every day, my dad would clear his droppings with water and throw him up into the air, so he could fly a loop around the house, coming back again once the porch was clean.

Paragraph 1:

One evening, my uncle was over, and my dad wanted to show him Peeper's loop.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Early one cold November morning, my mother dressed me in thick clothes. “Now come outside with me.” she said. Once outside, she handed me a brown paper bag that held something that smelled like wet dirt.” We need to plant bulbs before the first hard freeze. I have already dug the holes.” she said. “So take each bulb from the bag, drop it in the hole, and then gently push the dirt back into the hole covering the bulb—like so.”

I opened the bag. “These bulbs are ugly and look dead!”

“You're right. They’re not at all pretty. But they’re not dead; they’re just sleeping until spring.”

“And all the bulbs look alike,” I continued. “How do we know what they’ll look like next spring?”

“We won’t know for sure until spring, but that’s the joy of gardening. We’ll just have to be patient.”

All winter long I hoped that the flowers would bloom some day.

One day in late April, I found some pink pushing up through the ground. My mother was excited when I showed her. "Perfect!” she said. “They'll be ready at just the right time.”

A few days later, she took me to the local store where she gathered up colored paper, colored ribbons, and all the baskets on sale. “Okay, now we’re ready to make May baskets.”

“May baskets? What are May baskets?”

“They are small baskets filled with fresh flowers and secretly left at someone’s front door.” Her eyes shone with delight. “So when we get home we’ll cut the flowers that are blooming in the garden to make May baskets. Then tomorrow, May first, we’ll get up early and take them to our neighbors. Doesn’t that sound like fun?”

“But I waited all winter for the flowers to bloom, and they’re so beautiful. And... and... I thought we would keep them forever,” I said, close to tears.

“I know you’re disappointed, sweetie, but flowers—like kindness—are meant to be shared. Their beauty is not ours to keep. You understand?” my mother replied in a tender voice.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer's showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told his father what he wanted was the sports car. As Graduation Day approached, the young man waited for signs that his father had purchased the car.

Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautiful wrapped gift box.

Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man's name carved in gold. Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, "With all your money you give me a Bible?" He then stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible. He felt depressed and couldn't accept the fact why his father did not fulfill his expectation.

Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and a wonderful family, but realizing his father was very old, he thought perhaps he should go to see him. He had not seen him since that Graduation Day. Before he could make the arrangements, he received a message from one of his relatives telling him his father had passed away, and left all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and deal with them.

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I went up to the roof for a break after studying for an hour and watched the 50 or so people swimming in the natural rock pool below our house. It was a sunny day--a blue, cloudless sky over a calm sea. But then, as I looked in the distance, I discovered three or four big waves heading towards the shore. I'd seen these mini-tsunamis(海啸) many times before. They were heading at speed in the direction of the pool. Most people knew how to look out for them, but from the screams that started coming from the beach, I could tell someone was in trouble.

Without thinking, I ran down into the street, holding my body board(俯伏冲浪板) on the way and shouted at a stranger to go inside my house and call the coastguard. My neighbor Moises had heard the screaming as well and was also outside with his body board, so together we rushed to the steps that led down to the sea.

Once we got closer, we discovered the waves had pulled a boy and a girl from the pool and into the open sea. I knew that the nearest boat would take at least 30 minutes to reach us. Waiting for help wasn't a choice. I wasn't used to this sort of emergency--I’d never been trained as a lifeguard-but I didn't think twice about trying to save them. I supposed in a way I wanted to impress everyone: at 19, a deal like that can seem like a good opportunity to show off.

Moises and I dived into the water and it took us 10 minutes to get to them. When we finally reached them, they were almost lifeless with only their heads coming in and out of the water. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths but it was clear they wouldn't have been able to stay there much longer. I held the boy and pulled him over my board. Moises moved the girl onto his board. We discussed pushing them back to the shore, but we were too far out.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 续写的词数应为150左右。

On Christmas Eve, seventy-three-year-old George selected his food carefully. Skim milk was $2.99, white bread 89 cents with a 10-cent discount. Leaving the cashier, he calculated that he had saved 80 cents today.

At the exit, the wind reminded him of his gloves. “Where are they?” Not in the coat pockets. Not in the grocery bag either. He was sure he was wearing them when he entered the store. He clearly remembered putting them into the pocket of this coat. George made a second thorough search of all his pockets, again including the grocery bag. Now he was sure they must have been dropped somewhere inside the store.

Old George had bought the black leather gloves at a 25% discount, for just $35.00 ten years ago. They were soft and warn and very durable. He had taken care not to let a drop of water or rain touch his expensive gloves, so they looked like new. Losing this favorite possession was almost like losing a child to him.

George, calm on the outside but nervous inside, re-entered the store. He followed the same route he had walked before, starting at the bread counter, to the milk section, the corner where salt and sugar were placed, then the rest of the store. Several minutes of anxious searching turned out to be in vain. He asked the customers whether they saw a pair of black leather gloves, but they said no. Then he went over to the cashier without hesitation.to ask if she had received any lost gloves, but only received the same answer. His heart grew heavier.

“Society has changed, people have changed,” he murmured to himself. “Years ago, if somebody picked up something lost, they would give it back. Now a good action is lost.”

Yet he did not give up hope. He started to stare at anybody wearing black gloves to see if they looked like his. The first two persons he saw did wear gloves, but one was women's and the other not black.

Paragraph 1

Suddenly, he found a man looking like a lawyer, wearing black leather gloves.

8 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

There was something in the elderly woman’s grace that caught my eye. Although slow and unsure of her steps, the woman moved with deliberation (从容), and there was no hesitation in her gestures.

It was a few years ago, and I had taken a part - time holiday - season job in a video. store at the local shopping mall. From inside the store, I could see the people outside rushing by.

The elderly woman entered the store, along with her daughter, who was displaying a serious case of impatience, rolling her eyes, sighing and checking her watch every few seconds. I guessed if she had possessed a rope, she would have fastened it to her mother to drag her along to keep step with the rush of other shoppers.

The elderly woman separated from her daughter and began to seek through the DVDs on the nearest shelf. After the slightest hesitation, I walked over and asked if I could help her find something. The woman smiled up at me and showed me a title written on an old piece of paper.

Rather than rush off to locate the DVD for the woman, I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it. Looking back, I thought I wanted to enjoy her company for a moment.

Something about her deliberate movements reminded me of my own mother, who’d passed away the previous Christmas. I missed my mom and still felt regretful about the moments when I’d used my impatience to make her life unhappy.

As we walked along the back of the store, I introduced its floor plan: old television shows, action movies, cartoons, science fiction. The woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation.

We found the DVD and she thanked me, saying that it was the one she’d enjoyed when she was her daughter’s age. Unwillingly, I accompanied her to the cash register, realizing I had to return the elderly woman to her daughter, who was still tapping her foot at the front of the store.

9 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon. His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man had to spend all his time lying on his back. The men talked for hours continuously. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their experience in the army, where they had been on vacation. Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one-hour periods when his world would be broadened and enlivened(有活力的)by all the activities and colors of the world outside.

The window overlooked(俯瞰)a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm among flowers of every color. Grand old trees made everything around more attractive, and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque(如画的)scene. One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade(列队)passing by. Although the other man couldn’t hear the band, he could see it in his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window pictured it with descriptive words.

Days and weeks passed. One morning, the nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away. Later, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Finally, he would have the joy of seeing it for himself.

Michelle was eight years old when she heard her mom and dad talking about her little brother, Jack, now only an infant (婴儿). He was very sick and they were completely out of money. Only a very costly operation could save the baby now but there was no one to whom they could turn for the money needed. She heard Daddy say to her tearful mom, “Only a miracle can save him now.”

At the words, Michelle went to her bedroom and took out all the coins from her little moneybox. After counting the coins three times, she slipped out the back door and made her way to the drug store six blocks away…

She waited for a long time before the pharmacist (药剂师) turned around and asked her, “And what do you want?”

“Well, it’s about my brother,” Michelle answered. “He’s really, really sick ... and I want to buy a miracle.”

“I beg your pardon?” said the pharmacist. “His name is Jack and he has something very bad growing inside his body and my daddy said only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?”

“We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I’m sorry but I can’t help you,” the pharmacist said.

“Listen, I have the money to pay for it.” And with these words, Michelle poured out all the coins from her pockets.

At this time, a well-dressed man behind Michelle stooped down and asked the little girl, “I’m selling the miracle you want. Tell me how much money you have.”

One dollar and eleven cents.” Michelle answered in a low voice. “And it’s all the money I have, but I can get some more.”

“Well,” smiled the man. “A dollar and eleven cents—the exact price of a miracle for your little brother. Show me the place where your brother lives.”
