1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Two little birds were happily sitting on the rock, just having finished their lunch. Their parents had allowed them, for the first time, to go and hunt for their lunch by themselves. And they had enjoyed every bit of the freedom.

Suddenly, a net came and fell on both. They struggled to pass through it but in vain. Two boys jumped down from the branch above them. They quickly gathered the net. One of the boys, Eric, shouted to his little brother Max. “We have finally succeeded after ten days of waiting.”

“Yes, what luck! They look much more beautiful than ordinary birds. Let’s go home and put them in our cage,” Eric said joyfully. They ran home with the birds.

The two little birds were terribly frightened. They thought of their mother who must be anxiously waiting for them.

When the two boys got to the house gate, the sweet smell came out of the kitchen. Their mother Amla was baking cakes, which were what the boys couldn’t live without.

Hearing the boys’ footsteps, Amla anxiously asked, “Where have you been? I was getting worried. I’m cooking your favorite cakes.”

“Look, Mom, we have caught two beautiful birds! We are going to cage them. They will play with us.” Max proudly showed them to Amla.

Seeing the young birds shivering (发抖) in the boys’ hands, Amla said, “They are indeed beautiful. But they are so young and look so scared! They need their mother. Set them free.”

The boys said, “We will look after them.” Amla insisted that they shouldn’t keep them. They turned to their father John for help. Similarly,” John said, “It is not good to cage these birds. We should not take away their freedom.”

The boys were in tears and begged, “We love them so much. Please let us keep then.” “Well, just put them in the cage for the time being. Let’s enjoy your favorite cakes.” The boys jumped with joy. In the evening, John said to Amla, “The birds look very rare. We’d better do some research. Maybe we should call the police first.”

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Papa, my grandfather, started teaching me to play chess when I was ten. He taught me everything he knew about chess. It took me three years to defeat him. Papa turned the chessboard over. 1 was amazed by what 1 saw. It was covered with dozens of names and dates.

“These are the people who have beaten me at chess. Look, this is the fellow who saved my life when we served in the army. He sent me to the hospital and cared for me. While in the hospital, he defeated me at chess,” Papa said, pointing to a name, Paul Ward, on the board. Then he handed me a pen and asked me to add my name to it.

Years later, I graduated from college with a degree in social work. Papa handed me his chessboard, saying, “I want you to have this.”

“Papa, I can’t take this. It’s special to you.”

“And now, it’ll be special to you, Grandson. That’s the way it is in life: We pass our love on to the next person.”

Sadly, it wasn’t long after this that Papa passed away. I was heartbroken, of course. But determined to take the things I had learned from him, and the love he had shown me, and pass them on to others.

Then 1 was hired to be the social worker for a retirement community. Each day. I observed elderly residents sitting alone, heads down, ready to give up. In the yard, there were several stone tables with chess boards imprinted (刻印) on them. One day, I sat down, set up my chess pieces and waited. An elderly man cautiously approached.

“Care for a game?” I cheerfully inquired. The man smiled weakly and sat down. It seemed as if he wasn’t sure how to move the chess. We played in silence. The only sounds were the click-click of our chess pieces. 1 won. The old man sighed. “It’s been a while since I played,” he explained, “what if we can play chess together every day?” Then, I decided to do something for the elderly.

3 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was somewhere between spring and summer, and my mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then, I was 13 years old, and always felt unhappy with Mom. But I didn’t know that this trip was going to be a special one.

A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose heavenly fragrance(香味)filled the car. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom stopped the car. “What are you doing?” I shouted, fearing that the car had broken down and we’d be trapped there, so far from home. But that wasn’t the case. My mom jumped out of the car, grabbing(抓)the flowers from the back seat. “It’ll just be a minute,” she called back through the open windows.

I impatiently looked at the side of the road before finding a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, a little annoyed, as my mom reappeared ——empty- handed.

Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, “Do you know someone there?” She shook her head. “Then what did you do with the flowers?” She smiled slightly, “I gave them to the receptionist (前台接待员).” “What?” She laughed at my confusion. “I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially those who haven’t gotten any in a while.”

I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we continued our driving, I spoke again, “Did you leave your name?” To this, she answered instantly, “No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me.”

Suddenly, still thinking about Mom’s deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn’t know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by, since we had seen so few people along the way.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Alan and the other campers sat around the fire chewing meat chops. It would be Alan’s first night in a tent, and he was excited but a little nervous.

As they ate, the conservation officer spoke. “Much of the wildlife in this area comes out only at night. So after supper, let’s start a night watch. Volunteers will take turns to stay down here by the fire, away from the tents. Those who take part will get a chance to see a world that many of you never knew existed.”

Alan’s stomach tightened. Then he heard the officer continue, “There are no dangerous animals this close to Cape Town. Any volunteers?”

A tough-looking kid with red hair muttered something about needing a good night’s sleep. Another boy spoke up. “I’ll take a shift.” The kid who’d sat next to Alan on the bus volunteered. Alan sat tight. Then one of the girls raised her hand with a giggle. Alan frowned. If a girl could do it, he could, too. He volunteered.

A few more kids raised their hands, and then the officer explained, “This is how it works. When the rest of you go to bed in a tent, the first watcher takes his or her place by the fire. The duty of watcher is to keep the fire going gently. After thirty minutes, he or she wakes the next person.”

Alan heard his voice asking, “Are you sure it’s absolutely safe?”

The officer looked at him. “The danger is minimal. We wouldn’t have taken you here otherwise. Do you still want to volunteer?” Alan nodded but felt uneasy.

Earlier that day, the officer had challenged the campers to spot animal tracks along the river. That was fun. But being alone in the dark was not. Alan’s flashlight was already fading to a dim glow because he had used it too often. Looking around, Alan thought he saw a large bird swooping (俯冲) and wondered if it was an owl. He had seen small paw prints in the sand by the river. Was the owl hunting for the creature that had made them?

5 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Smile for the Camera

He had beautiful features, half-Arab and half-African: large almond-shaped brown eyes and a delicate nose. His hair was black, cut short. For a refugee (难民), he was in good shape physically, though dirty and barefoot.

He stood in front of my camera and stared. “You will find my parents,” he ordered. “I can’t promise,” I replied and focused the camera on his face, “Smile.” “Then I can’t smile.” I snapped a photo of the boy and wrote down his vital information: Maiga Fotana, age 10; his parents’ names; his village. “Bye,” I said when I finished and he walked away silently.

Until sundown, I shot pictures of hundreds of children. We would post their pictures wherever we could in the war-affected country, hoping someone would recognize a little face and come to the camp to claim the child.

The next morning, Maiga was first in line. “Did you find my parents?” he asked. “No,” I said, “I just took your picture yesterday. I haven’t even developed it yet.”

“My parents will be looking for me, so I need to take another picture,” he said. I loaded my camera. “One photo is enough,” I said, “We’ll make copies and post them all over. Besides, I don’t have enough film (胶卷). I can’t take two photos of everyone!” He drew close to me. “We won’t tell others,” he whispered. He winked (眨眼示意). I shook my head. “Bye,” he said.

The next day, he came and tilted (倾斜) his head, “I want to help you,” he said, “I can write names.” He took his place next to me. Maiga had beautiful hand-writing, square and even (方正匀称). He spoke to each child with authority as he wrote down their information. As each child left, Maiga said, “Bye.”

One day, hundreds of people came to our camp. They held photos in their hands with hope in their wide dark eyes. They strained their necks to see through the crowds. They called out names.

All the aid workers gathered to watch as adults and children ran to each other, crying and embracing. I saw family after family brought together, and I felt delighted and moved as well.

A Community Puts on a Dazzling Display of Support

In Sara’s family, putting up Christmas lights was always a big day of celebration. Every year, just after Thanksgiving Day, her dad Anthony, 70, would visit local stores to check out new decorations and then excitedly string lights and hang decorations in and out of the house. The dazzling (绚烂的) display made him a hit in the community.

On 2020 Christmas Eve, as usual, the whole house twinkled with lights, and gifts were piled under the tree. While everyone was looking forward to enjoying another Christmas together as a family, Sara, got a call: the whole family had tested positive for COVID-19. Their Christmas celebration had to be canceled.

At first, everyone’s symptoms (症状) seemed manageable. But right after the new year, Anthony started having trouble breathing and unfortunately passed away two weeks later, though the rest had recovered from COVID-19. The following week of planning the funeral was the worst for Sara and her husband, Frank. Sorrow left them doubled over in pain. The saddest of all was that no neighbours attended her father’s funeral. Only the twinkling Christmas lights at night brought them a little bit joy. The lights were one of the last moments they had of their beloved father, so they kept them up.

One morning in February, Sara received an envelope. “Take your Christmas lights down! It’s Valentine’s Day!!!” the unsigned letter read. Sara looked at the paper in shock. Then she got angry. She could have bottled up that anger, but she decided to write about it instead. She logged on to a local community Facebook group and shared the letter. She ended the post with this: “We all had a tough year. Be kind to people because you never know what they are going through.”

Lora’s house stood on a wooded slope not far up from the river. On a sunny morning in July, she decided to take her three kids down to the river, Mikey aged 13, Paul 8 and Lisa 5. As a nature lover, she insisted they spend as much time as possible outdoors. “We are going to pick berries now,” she announced.

The group made its way over the dusty road and then onto a dirt trail through the trees. Stopping the children at the first berry bush, “Look, the berries are all over,” she said. Mikey broke into a run to the berries. Lora and the little ones hurried to keep up. She helped Lisa find some clusters(串;簇) on the lowest branches. Paul watched and then tasted a berry. “Mmm, good,” he said, and got busy picking more.

Lora and the children moved slowly from bush to bush. Within 20 minutes, the children had filled their jars and were almost at the river. “OK,” Lora commanded after the group climbed down to the sandbank, “Let’s play just right here.”

Lora rested herself not far from the children, listening to their laughing and playing. Suddenly, she sensed the children go quiet. She looked up to see the back of a big-sized cat standing over Lisa. It was a young cougar(美洲狮). The sight of the cougar near her kids immediately froze Lora. The three kids, rooted to the spot, were too nervous to say a word. She knew she must do something.

Paragraph 1:

The first idea that hit Lora was to attract the cougar’s attention away from her kids._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Paragraph 2:

Just as Lora was struggling with the beast with almost her last strength, she saw the three kids running back, each holding a stick.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jesse and Vern used to be totally strangers living in two towns hundreds of miles apart. Their friendship started with an orange shirt in a bottle 22 years ago, when computers and Internet were not available.

8-year-old Jesse lived a simple and happy life in a small town with his parents. School was starting next week. The family would get Jesse a new set of clothing. Jesse was not so passionate for new clothes. After his father’s persuasion, Jesse finally agreed to the shopping. Jesse tried on a pair of new pants, new shoes, and an orange shirt. He didn’t like the pants and shoes much. But he did like the orange shirt.

School started, and Jesse put on his new orange shirt. All the other kids had new clothes too, but his orange shirt, in Jesse’s mind, was the most handsome of all. He wore it almost every day. Even when it was dirty, he would insist that it be washed and ready, so he could wear it the next day.

Time passed quickly and Jesse had grown over two inches. But his orange shirt was not growing with him. One day, his mother asked him to go to the grocery store to pick up some things for supper and reminded him not to wear that small orange shirt any more, which looked funny on Jesse.

Jesse ignored what his mother told him. In the store two little girls laughed at his tight orange shirt. Feeling embarrassed, Jesse picked up his groceries and hurried home. Getting home, he told his mother that he wouldn’t wear that shirt any more. His mother said, “Jesse, since the lovely shirt is too small on you, maybe someone else needs it.” “I really hope it goes to a lovely boy. But who can it be?” said Jesse. The next morning, Jesse’s father told Jesse that he had a good idea, saying he would take Jesse to the river.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It is funny that our lives seem to go on, but our use of clothes often doesn’t. It was a few weeks ago when my sons showed me the hole in their jeans. Further inspection showed that both my sons’ pants were worn out and had holes. While shirts were in better shape, both of them had “grown” too well to wear them. Their bodies grew out and their shirts grew tight because they were in adolescence.

I spent the whole afternoon first at the second-hand shop, and then at the department store picking out new blue jeans and better fitting shirts. It was a lot of work and I was tired when I got home. I took off the tags and put up their new clothes and then I gathered up the old ones to throw them into the garbage can.

The jeans were more than garbage ready, but when I picked up their shirts to throw away, I felt a little push in my mind. I knew at once what it was. It was the good nature in us. The good nature let me know that most of the shirts were still in good condition to wear. They shouldn’t be deserted when someone less fortunate could use them. I smiled to myself and my good nature made me lay out the shirts.

I called out loudly, “Sons, help tidy up your clothes!” They felt confused and asked, “Mom, what are you doing?” I patiently explained what I wanted to do. And we checked carefully to see if any shirts were too old. I threw away some, but I put the rest back into a big bag for donation. As we put them in my car, I felt a joy in my heart.

Meanwhile, I also taught my sons, “Always listen to those little pushes in your mind. Always listen to your good nature. And they will always lead you to give more love and receive more joy. They will always lead you to be a better yourself.” My sons understood my words and were supportive of me doing something with second-hand clothes.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I decided to encourage more people to donate old clothes.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据具体内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was my birthday that day, and my grandfather gave me a gift—a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get the money was to break the piggy hank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea. And he added. “The piggy bank would help save your money so that, at the end of the year, you might have enough for that bike you dreamed about.” He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised sincerely, “I wouldn’t break it open until I could afford my dream bike.”

Whenever my grandfather gave me some pocket money, he would say, “This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up.” When he gave me larger amounts, it was clear for me to save the extra money in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy hank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it.

Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful presents. I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about buying those things went away. So for almost three years. I had only put money into the piggy hank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn’t break my piggy hank for anything. Bat one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces. I was sleepless that night. Staring at my piggy bank. I was thinking about what I could do with it.
