1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As the Chinese New Year approached, many people working away from home were preparing to return for the holiday. My uncle and my aunt were no exception. Before the Spring Festival, my uncle took a day off and got up early. He needed to catch the first bus to the train station to buy tickets. After dinner, my uncle came back on the bus. “Did you get the tickets?” my aunt asked, her heart finally settling when she saw my uncle nodding tiredly. “But, the two tickets are for different trains. You’ ll leave a day earlier, and I’ll leave the next day,” my uncle said softly. “As long as we can go home, that’s OK,” my aunt replied. “We haven’t been back for two years. Ming Tang is almost ready for primary school.” Ming Tang was their only son, and he was six years old that year.

When the factory closed for the holiday, my uncle took my aunt to the train station. My aunt was going alone, and my uncle was a bit worried. “Your ticket has a seat. Take this small bag with you. My ticket is a standing one, so I’ll find a place to squat (蹲坐) if I can. The bank card is in the inner pocket of your coat. When you get off the train, there’s a bank outside the station. Be careful on the train; don’t get squeezed or stepped on; don’t sleep too soundly. Hold on to your bag when you get on and off the train. The water and instant noodles are in the handbag, easy to take out and put back. It takes eleven hours to get there. You’ll arrive at eight in the morning, so don’t oversleep. After you get off, don’t wait for me. Take the money from the bank and go home. The elderly and the child are waiting. I’ll call home from the train station tomorrow.”

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was teaching Kama, my little sister, to grow plants. Dig a hole. Put in a seed. Cover it with dirt. Water it. Wait. “See, Kama,” I explained, “a whole plant will grow from this tiny seed. All we have to do is water it.”

Kama had her own watering bottle so she could “help” me in the garden. One day, after everything was watered, she ran to the fence and started sprinkling water on another spot. I walked over and saw a fresh patch of dirt near the fence.

“Did you plant something there?” I asked.

“Yes,” she said. “I’m growing a pencil. My purple pencil got too small, so I planted it.” “What? But, Kama…”

I should have explained things right then, but I just muttered, “Uh... I never grew one before.”

Later I got what seemed like a great idea. I dug up Kama’s pencil and “planted” a brand new purple pencil. Kama was really excited when she saw it. “My pencil grew!” she shouted.

A few days later, Kama was watering on the same spot. Two days later, new crayons sticking their point y little heads out, thanks to me. Kama jumped up and down and yelled.

“They look like flowers!” She “picked” them and ran into the house.

Next, Kama grew an adult bear doll from a tiny one, a soup spoon from a teaspoon, and a hand mirror from a piece of glass. When she claimed that she had grown these things, I just kept my mouth shut! Actually, it was fun trying to think of what should grow from Kama’s seeds. And it was cool to see her get excited.

One day, I saw her patting down some dirt near the fence again, so I knew she’d just planted something. My heart dropped to my feet when she asked, “How long does it take to grow a goldfish, Brad?” I couldn’t speak.

“Not long, I bet!” said Kama. She knelt down (跪下) to whisper “Grow, Molly. Grow,” before she skipped back to the house.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Max, ten years old, was loved by us all in our family. This cute yellow dog used to play with me on the front verandah (走廊). But whenever my dad put two fingers to his lips and did whistle, Max would immediately rush to him with his tail wagging (摇摆). Such a harmonious life continued until we had to go abroad to find a treatment for my mom’s serious disease.

To take better care of my mom, we had no choice but to leave Max at home. And Sandy, my dad’s friend, was to be Max’s guardian (监护人) while we were overseas. Six weeks after our departure, however, my dad received a call from Sandy saying that Max had run away. His face got pale as he heard this news.

Sandy had advertised constantly on ABC radio and other newspapers. Despite many “sightings”, the dog was never found. But our family thought that my dad held a secret hope that Max was still alive.

Eight months later, we returned and my dad immediately began to search for Max. One day, he had a call from 375 kilometres away. An elderly lady living on her own in the suburb of the town was putting food out “for a very old yellow dog”. In the night the food disappeared. This had been going on for weeks. As she told on the telephone, it was “just glimpses of a yellow dog in the shadows” of her disused tennis court.

That was enough for us to set off in my dad’s low-slung Jensen car. It was hardly the right vehicle for the rough roads we travelled that day.

Five and a half hours later, we found the tennis court. Sadly, the elderly lady told my dad that the dog hadn’t been around today yet for the food was still there. Hearing that, Dad looked around the tennis court. It had long been deserted and overgrown with weeds. But he noticed a path hidden in the bush.

In the summer of 2005, Kathryn Fumie, having just finished her freshman year of college, was living in an apartment and learning to cook. One day, she decided to make soup on the stove.

As the soup gently cooked on the stove, Fumie went to check on it. In a moment of distraction, she accidentally knocked the pot over, causing the boiling soup to splash onto her hand. The pain was immediate and unbearable, and she quickly realized she had severely burned her skin.

Her classmate, who was nearby, saw the accident and quickly called for an ambulance. Within minutes, the ambulance arrived, and an EMT (急救医疗医生), wearing a mask, began to assist her. The EMT helped Fumie stay calm during the 45-minute drive to the hospital, despite her continuously asking for some alleviation of her pain.

“Could you do something to ease my pain, please? Could I have a cold pack?” Fumie asked repeatedly. The EMT explained gently but firmly that he couldn’t give her a cold pack because extreme cold might cause further damage to her already injured skin. She had to tolerate the pain until they reached the burn unit.

At the hospital, the doctor treating her took a compassionate (有同情心的) approach. He talked to her throughout the treatment process to help distract her from the pain. They chatted about various topics, including her part-time job at a factory, which helped to take her mind off her injuries. Most importantly, the doctor made her know that she was going to be okay.

“He had an amazing voice, and just was so calm. He made sure that I got the right treatment,” Fumie remembered. The doctor’s professional and empathetic demeanor made a significant difference in her experience.

Fumie was in hospital for four and a half days, receiving excellent care. Two months later, fully recovered, she returned to her part-time job as a receptionist at the factory. However, the story didn’t stop here.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I sat in the breakfast corner with my four-year-old son, Matthew, trying to ignore the ache in my stomach. I was still recovering from a surgery. I hoped for strength and happiness. But the future seemed so hopeless.

Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. “Bird!” he shouted, rushing to the sliding door. Sure enough, there was a white dove seated on a rubber tree. It sat there a few moments, and then flew away. I’d never seen one in our neighborhood before.

When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time it was with a mate carrying twigs (嫩枝), “Look, Matthew,” I said, pointing to the tree. “They’re going to make a nest.” The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on the top of the rubber tree. Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he’d run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door, talking to the birds while they worked. As much as I was grieving (感到悲伤), I couldn’t help but look forward to the doves’ visits too. We watched their progress as if it were a real-life soap opera unfolding before us. Gradually, my pain disappeared, replaced by joy.

Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree’s broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew through, throwing the doves’ nest to the ground. I heard the twigs break apart. Nothing good ever lasts. I wouldn’t blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pi le of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from scratch, though the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they renewed their efforts, as if nothing had happened.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment.

She ran a small shop at a flea market, and collected old clothes and some other things to sell for the money we needed. Once during elementary school, it was field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed and wondered how could she do this to me? I threw her a hateful look and ignored her. The next day at school, my schoolmates asked me, “your mom only has one eye?” and taunted me.

I was so angry with my mom and wished that she would just disappear from this world. So l said to my mom, “Why don’t you have the other eye?! If you’re only gonna make me a laughing stock!” My mom did not respond, I guess I felt a little bad, but at the same time, I felt so good to have had said what I wanted to say. Maybe it was because I was full of anger then and there, I didn’t think that I had hurt her feelings very badly.

For the words I had said to her earlier, there was something pinching at me in the corner of my heart. Even so, I hated my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty. I told myself that I would become successful in the near future and get out of that house for good, so I studied very hard. Later I got accepted by the Seoul University, I left my mother and came to Seoul to study. Then I got married there.

I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. Now I am living happily as a successful man. I enjoy the life in Seoul because it’s a place that doesn’t remind me of my mom past. This kind of happiness was getting bigger and bigger, until one day someone knocked at my door. It was my mom! And still with her one eye! It felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me. My little girl ran away, scared of my mom’s eye.

When Emily was 16, she had a dream of becoming a professional singer, a dream that was as bright as the stars in the night sky. Emily’s parents, though supportive, often reminded her of the importance of her studies. This made Emily feel torn (为难) between her passion and her responsibilities

Each day, Emily trained herself for hours. She would sing in the mirror, imagining every audience was fully attracted by her singing. The sound of her voice filled the empty room, giving Emily a sense of purpose and fulfillment (成就感).

When she learned about the local singing competition, Emily felt a spark of excitement in her heart. She chose a song that reflected her emotional journey and practised it over and over again. The lyrics spoke to her heart, allowing her to relive (回味) moments of joy, heartbreak and growth.

Finally came the day of the competition. With butterflies in her stomach, Emily could feel her heart pounding in her chest as she walked onto the stage. When I was about four years old, I started washing my face on my own. However, I always ignored the area behind my ears on purpose though my mom would often remind me.

One summer, in July of that year, my mom drove me to my grandparents’ house for our annual summer holiday visit. When we arrived, I was told that Grandma had gone on a trip with her friends and wouldn’t be back for another two weeks. Feeling a bit down, I went to the yard to play while my mom and grandpa caught up on some things. Although I couldn’t hear their conversation clearly, I had a strong feeling they were talking about me based on their gestures and expressions. Later, my mom returned home, and she would come back to pick me up two months later.

After dinner that night, Grandpa asked me to take a bath before going to bed. Since I loved taking baths, I happily agreed. With the bathtub (浴缸) filled with water, Grandpa reminded me, “Just make sure you clean the area behind your ears really well. You wouldn’t want potatoes to start growing there, would you?”

“Potatoes?” I stopped in my tracks and turned back to look at him. “Yes, potatoes. If you don’t clean the dirt behind your ears, potatoes might actually sprout (发芽) and grow there,” he explained, causing my eyes to widen in surprise. “But I don’t have any potatoes behind my ears, Grandpa,” I said as I ran my fingers along the back of my ears. He took a quick glance and replied, “Oh, I see a couple of sprouts: starting right there!” He urged me to get into the bathtub immediately and scrub (擦洗) them away thoroughly.

I nodded, still in disbelief. This was the first time I had ever heard such a thing. Why hadn’t my parents warned me about this before? I wondered, but couldn’t find an answer. Nonetheless, I felt shocked by Grandpa’s warning.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My 10-year-old son and two friends attended a wonderful basketball camp on 6 August 2023. The camp was over two hours long, with more than 60 kids in attendance. I watched how much fun my son was having throughout the day.

A few minutes before the session (一场) ended, there was a shooting contest. Only a few kids were chosen to compete, and my son was not one of them. The contest winners received prizes and recognition, and some children were also selected as “All Star” due to their excellent performance. Again, my son was not selected.

My son was struggling to deal with his disappointment. Of course, as his mother, I would have loved to see him win an award. He absolutely loves the sport, and he is impressive at rebounding (篮板球). He would have enjoyed the honors. It would have also been fun to see either of his friends selected. But sometimes it doesn’t work out that way.

When the camp ended and we walked out, I could see how disappointed he was. I love my kid’s confidence and his competitiveness, but it can also lead to dealing with disappointment and frustration.

At the camp, he played a basketball game with kids he had never met, guarded them fiercely and took shots easily against them. As his mom, I was thrilled he spent the day without his iPad. All in all, the day felt wonderful. The last thing that I wanted was for these awards to ruin the experience.

I could see how he was feeling about the day. I decided to simplify it for him. I did the math and figured out the shooting contest and awards were about 6% of the total camp. The rest of the camp, the parts that he enjoyed, were 94% of the day. Even though the kid loves math, it was hard for him to see the contests and awards as a small part of his day.
