Jim slumped on the couch. Mother’s Day was coming up, and he didn’t have a present. “How can I buy a present without money?” he thought.

Jim picked up the newspaper that was lying on the couch. He noticed a large advertisement on the front page. The local department store was sponsoring a contest. “Tell us why your mom is special and win a shopping spree(疯狂购物) for her,” said the ad.

“This is perfect!” thought Jim. He ran to his room with the newspaper, taking a pencil and a blank piece of paper from his desk, he started to write.

“My mom is the best mother in the world. She always makes a lunch for me to take to school, and she never forgets my dessert. She reads as many books to me before bed as I want. She always remembers to check under the bed for monsters. And she gives the best hug, but never in front of my friends, who would laugh at me for hugging my mom.”

Jim liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp from his dad. He ran to the mailbox with his entry(参赛作品), “Mom will love having a shopping spree,” he thought.

Jim checked the mailbox every day for his prize. Days passed by, and then weeks. Soon it was the day before Mother’s Day. Jim still hadn’t heard anything about the contest.

“What am I going to do now?” he wondered. He didn’t have a present, and he didn’t have a shopping spree, and he still didn’t have any money. He had to think of something. Jim closed his eyes and curled his toes and thought so hard that his ears hurt.

A Great Monday

Monday started out well. I woke up on time, ate breakfast and did some last minute studying for my math test later that morning. I was confident of getting good grades. I left my house and ten minutes later, I sat with my friends on the school bus. We were busy chatting about how we spent our weekend. At the next stop, a student named Ryan got on the bus. He was in a rush and tripped (绊倒) over someone’s foot. There was a loud noise as he fell to the floor.

Every one of us on the bus laughed. Ryan got up, brushed his jacket and went to an empty seat. He tried to laugh with us, but his face was red with embarrassment. The rest of the morning went by quickly. I did well in my math test. I read two more chapters of To Kill a Mockingbird in English class. Soon we heard the lunch bell. I met my friends from the cheerleading team in the dining hall. I noticed Ryan a few tables away, sitting by himself. He caught me looking at him. I smiled at him quickly and looked away.

When we finished eating, we went to the courtyard to practice a cheer we would do at that night’s football game. After much practice, we finally managed to do the cheer perfectly. We decided to practice it again one last time. Just like the rest of my day so far, the cheer was going great. I raised my leg for one last toe touch. That was when I felt my jeans (牛仔裤) split (裂开) down the middle of my backside.

I froze. I had no idea what to do. I heard people burst out laughing and I saw them pointing at my torn jeans. I tried to cover myself with my hands, I tried to laugh too, but I felt tears begin to well up in my eyes.

Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of robbers(抢劫者) in the park, So usually I didn’t take anything with me. How could they rob me if I didn’t have anything? But one morning, my wife gave me a $10 bill and asked me to buy some bread on the way. It was a beautiful morning and the park was quiet with very few people walking or jogging(慢跑)around. While I was running through the park, another jogger knocked into me. He apologized and continued running.

For a while, I didn’t think too much of it. However, when I noticed the wide path where I was running, I thought it was kind of strange. Last Saturday David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yelling: “How stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.” David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.

David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs. Brown in middle school. After he entered middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David believed.

But one day it all changed. That day, in an English writing class, Mrs. Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He had never expected to be praised. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.

That day after he returned home, he wrote another short story and gave it to Mrs. Brown the next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short dories and asked Mrs. Brown to read them and correct them for him. Mrs. Brown always gave him good advice to improve them. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He gained his confidence and was hopeful about his future.

He succeeded in entering college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published, becoming famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs. Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.

Will you wait while I look for it?” he asked.

His mom thought about how many times she’d told Alan to clean his room up. She said something to Alan’s grandma in a low voice. Then, she said to Alan,“You will have to stay home. Your dad and I will take your brother Alex to the Lego Land. Grandma will stay at home with you.”

“No! Please wait for me. I want to go to the Lego Land,” Alan cried. “I’m sorry, Alan. I’ve told you a dozen times to clean your room and you did not do it. You can’t find your shoe now. It’s your own fault for not cleaning your room. You will stay home.”

7 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was a proud mother of three children, my last little one being delivered in the middle of this pandemic. She was born in August and her name is Aida.

Shortly after having Aida, my mother-in-law showed me something she learned from her friend’s mother in an art class she attended weekly. She had shown me how to knit a scarf (织围巾). She showed me stitches and gave me her half done project. I spent a lot of time breastfeeding my sweet little girl, so I had some extra time to do something with my hands throughout the day. I enjoyed making the scarf so I purchased tons of yarn since it was winter. I wanted to make scarves for my three children as Christmas gifts.

There was a new family that moved in down the street. The only daughter of the family was Jane, a shy girl, aged 14, the same age of my oldest son David. It seemed that she came from a financially disadvantaged family, for she always wore old clothes. Worse still, in such cold days, she had no more clothes to wear and trembled with cold.

Due to the pandemic, society was thrown into crisis mode. Schools were closed, food supplies and deliveries were suspended and children were stuck at home. In such discouraging times, however, they became good companions, talking and playing at home or around the houses.

It was dreadfully cold this winter. Every time David came back from outside, with red face, he always cried, “Mum, it’s freezing outside!” then he came over to see whether I finished the scarf. I could tell how impatient he was to wear my scarf sooner! I had to speed the project to satisfy his expectation. But David comforted me saying he could wait a few days. What a kind and considerate boy he was! Then my great project finally was accomplished on the morning ahead of Christmas.

He felt great about helping out. But he hoped there was more he could do to this poor man, although he himself wasn’t rich at all.

During the following days, Tom tried to give the man some money and bring him food when he passed by him.

Actually, the man, named Adam, begged for money to feed the many homeless dogs he had brought to his home. He had a job at night at a construction site. But the money made there wasn’t enough for him to care for the dogs which he considered as his kids, so he had to beg for money. However, Tom didn’t know about it.

Tom angrily walked away, thinking that man lied to him. He walked to where he knew the man was begging for money and met him. “I know you don’t have children. Stop lying to people. “We don’t have any food to spare,” Tom said to the beggar. “We both work hard all day long and we only have enough food to get us through the day. However, if you want, I can lend you my ax(斧头)and teach you how to cut firewood. And then you can go to the market with us and sell what you have cut. Gopal and his family like to go to the beach during weekends and school holidays. On some weekends, his parents bring him and his sister, Meena, to the seaside. Last weekend they went to Pulau Pangkor.

She and her brother put on their swimsuits. They walked to the shoreline. They could see that the tide was quite high. Happily, they walked out into the water and swam. Their parents shouted at them to be careful and not to swim too far out.

After a good swim, the whole family had a picnic under the coconut tree. Their mother had made many types of sandwiches. There were chicken, egg, tuna and sardine sandwiches. The sandwiches were spread out on a mat on the sand. Next to the sandwiches were bottles of mineral water. Their mother had also brought a flask of hot tea. She knew their father liked a cup of hot tea after eating sandwiches. The whole family enjoyed the sandwich meal. Somehow, they were thinking that those were the best sandwiches they had ever tasted.

After eating, Gopal’s mother cleared the cups and bottles on the mat. Suddenly, they heard someone shout, “Help! Help! Someone is drowning!” Gopal looked far out into the sea and saw a child struggling in the water. The strong wave was sweeping the child away. The child was drifting in the water.

It was obvious that she could not swim. And there were no lifeguards around.
