1 . Once upon a time, a daughter complained to her father that her senior high school life was unhappy and that she was tired of struggling with homework all the time.
Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, h placed potatoes, eggs and coffee beans in them. After 20 minutes, he took them out, putting the potatoes and eggs in a bowl and the coffee in a cup.
Turning to his daughter, he said, “Look closer, and touch the potatoes.” She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After puling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to taste the coffee. Its good smell brought a smile to her face.
“Father, what does this mean?” she asked. He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and the coffee beans were in the same adversity (逆境)—the boiling water. However, each one reacted differently.
The strong and hard potato became soft and weak in boiling water. The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard. However, the coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new. “Which one do you want to be like,” he asked. “When adversity knocks on your door, how will you respond?”

2 . At eleven, I decided to learn to swim. There was a pool at the YMCA offering exactly the opportunity. My mother continually warned against it, and kept fresh in my mind the details of each drowning in the river. But the YMCA pool was safe.
I had a childhood fear of water. This started when I was three years old and my father took me to the beach. The huge waves knocked me down and swept over me.
The pool was quiet. I was afraid of going in all alone, so I sat on one side of the pool to wait for others. Then came a big boy. He yelled, “Hi, how’d you like to be ducked?” With that he picked me up and threw me into the deep end.I landed in a sitting position, and swallowed water. But I was not frightened out of my wits—when my feet hit the bottom, I would make a big jump to come out of the surface. It seemed a long way down. I gathered all my strength when I landed and made what I thought was a great spring upwards. Then I opened my eyes and saw nothing but water. I tried to yell but no sound came out. I went down, down, endlessly.
When I came to consciousness, I found myself lying on the bed in the hospital.
I never went back to the pool. I avoided water whenever I could. This misadventure stayed with me as the years rolled by.It deprived(剥夺) me of the joy of boating and swimming. Finally, I decided to get an instructor. Piece by piece, he built a swimmer. Several months later, the instructor was finished, but I was not .Sometimes the terror would return.
This went on until July. I swam across the Lake Went worth.Only once did the terror return. When I was in the middle of the lake, I put my face under and saw nothing but bottomless water. I laughed and said, “Well, Mr Terror, what do you think you can do to me?” I had conquered my fear of water.

Summer was surprised and replied, “So you are not happy with yourself too? I always wished I could have done as well as you did in the studies. 7 . I just had one of the most interesting experiences of my life, and wanted to share it with my dearest friends.
One cold evening, I drove home and was stuck in a traffic jam, when my car started to die. I managed to coast into a gas station in order not to get in others’ way. Before I made the call to ask for help, I found a crying woman. I walked towards her and asked if she needed help. She said she was driving to California and that things were very hard for her right now.
I helped her fill up her car completely, walked to the next McDonald’s and bought 2 big bags of food, some gifts and a big cup of coffee. She gave the food to the kids in the car. They ate them quickly. And we stood eating fries and talking a little.
She told me her name, and that she lived in Kansas City. Her husband left 2 months ago and she had not been able to support her family. So she went to California to find her parents. She packed up everything she owned in the car. She told the kids they were going to California for Christmas, but not that they were going to live there.
I gave her my gloves, a hug and said a quick prayer(祈祷) with her for safety on the road. As I was walking over to my car, she said, “So, are you like an angel or something?”
It was so incredible(不可思议的) to be a part of someone else’s miracle(奇迹). And of course, you guessed it, when I got in my car it started right away and got me home with no problem.

9 . Since birth, I have worn a tracheotomy tube (气切管) around my neck to help me breathe. When I was growing up, it was common for adults to tell me that I should wear colorful scarves (围巾) so that other people wouldn’t see it. They would say, “You can’t even tell it’s there,” as if my disability is something to be ashamed of (羞耻). As a kid, I never really thought about my disability the way I do now. It was just how I lived my life.
Now I’m 26 years old, and I’m proud to call myself a disabled woman because I consider my disability to be a part of who I am. I travel around the world to share my story as a disabled reporter and train other reporters on how to cover disability problems. I still remember the first time I gave a university lecture to a group of students. I realized that I could help create safe spaces where disabled people can be themselves and feel free to tell their own stories.
Unfortunately, being disabled is still viewed as something that is meant to be overcome. But for so many of us, this is how we live. This is who we are. I am always moved by the people I’ve met in the disability community: educators, historians, writers, lawyers and many more because we share the same dream and the same need for a mentally-safe world.
