I lived with Lassie, a black and white dog, sitting with her head on my lap, her intelligent, brown eyes staring at me as if to say, “Have a good day.”
Lassie arrived at my front door four years ago. Because I couldn’t find its owner, I had to keep it. Throughout the years, she was with me, proving to be a superb “judge” time and time again. I never knew if it was as a result of her sense of smell or sound or sixth sense. However, whatever it was, she definitely had a talent humans lacked. She would either wag the tip of her tail a couple of times to indicate that the visitors were acceptable, or slightly curl her top lip, which told you to be cautious. Her judgement was always accurate. Her gift was never more apparent than tonight.
The doorbell rang. I decided not to answer it. It rang again more insistently this time. Someone just wouldn’t go away. Still I hesitated. On the fourth ring, with Lassie by my side, I finally answered the call. I was getting very nervous for there stood a “monster”. The man had big eyes with a twisted body under a heavy overcoat, and his head leaned slightly forward.
“May I use your phone?” The deep voice came from somewhere back in his throat. Although the request was polite, his tone was rough. I shrank back as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a piece of paper. He took a step forward and further asked me for permission. Again, I refused his request. Thinking he might try and force his way in, I looked at Lassie to see if she was ready to defend our home. Surprisingly, she sat by my side, the tip of her tail wagging.
“You’re crazy, Lassie,” I thought to myself. But there was no denying sign. Based on past experience, I trusted her judgement. The man explained to me that he lost his phone by accident.

4 . Dolly Parton was one of the six honorees to receive the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy on Thursday night at Gotham Hall in New York. She was celebrated for her extraordinary contributions that make the world a better place.
It is thought that Dolly Parton has been quietly paying for the band uniforms of many Tennessee high schools for years. She used the songwriting payment she earned from Whitney Houston’s version of I Will Always Love You to purchase a shopping center in Nashville to support the surrounding black community in Houston’s honor.
Her “Imagination Library” provides children under age 5 with a free book every month. The library aims to inspire a love for reading through funding shared by Dolly Parton and local community partners in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and the Republic of Ireland. Currently, Parton sends out about 2 million free books each month. Parton has also donated many books to disaster relief. In 2021, she even raised $700,000 to help residents impacted by the terrible flooding in Middle Tennessee.
In her Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy speech, Parton said she didn’t really have a strategy for her donations. “I just give from my heart. I never know what I’m going to do or why I’m going to do it. I often see a need, and if I can meet it, then I will,” she said.
This year, Parton also carried out the Care More Program at her Dollywood Parks and Resorts, which gives employees a day off to volunteer at a nonprofit of their choice. Parton said, “I hope the program will let people realize that when they help somebody, they help themselves more.” “That’s what we should do as human beings,” she said. “I’ve never quite understood why we have to let religion and politics and other things stand in the way of just being good human beings. I think it’s important just to feel like you’re doing your part and doing something good and right.”

5 . In 1992, when Xi Jinping worked in Fuzhou, he came across a newspaper report about “My Guling,” written by a Chinese student studying in the United States.
The report described an unsuccessful attempt by an American couple to revisit the small town of Guling in southern China. Her husband, Milton Gardner, spent 10 years here as a child before moving back to the United States in 1911.
Gardner later became a professor of physics at the University of California. He has been eager to return to Guling since China and the US established diplomatic relations in 1979. But because of his failing health, he never made the trip.
Gardner spent his final hours saying “Kuling, Kuling,” according to the newspaper.
After his death, his wife, Elizabeth Gardner, decided to carry out her husband’s last wish and has since made several trips to China to try to find the small city her husband loved so much. Her efforts were in vain as she had few clues (clues) as to the exact location of the town. But a Chinese student of the Gardner family identified the town as Guling, near Fuzhou, from a postmark on some of the late Mr. Gardner’s old mail. The student wrote an article about Gardner’s story and sent it to the People’s Daily, one of China’s leading newspapers.
“After I read the story, I immediately contacted Mrs. Gardner through the relevant authorities and invited her to visit,” told the press. There she met nine of her husband’s childhood friends, all of whom were over 90 at the time.
“She said she would cherish the friendship (bond) between her husband and the Chinese people, because after seeing the beautiful Guling and the warmth and goodwill of the Chinese people with her own eyes, she now understands why her husband is so attached to China.”
I believe there are many such touching stories between the Chinese and American people.

I bought Jude as a tiny puppy after my previous dog died in a horrible incident. My heart was just broken and it was only having Jude that brought me back round from that pain. He was a lovely and happy pet.
For the first time in years, our whole family had gone on holiday together. It was only for four days but it meant my dog Jude was going to be looked after by someone outside the family. I was a bit nervous about it. After struggling for several days, I eventually booked him into a home boarding place in Belfast. I was worried about him the moment he was dropped off, because he had never been in kennels before.
The emotions we have gone through in the last few days have been awful. Jude was used to the comforts of a home and he had never been on his own before. Thus, I was worried about him at the bottom of my heart. Then unfortunately, the accident happened.
We went away on Monday, July 11, and he was missing on the 12th after being left in an exercise area. But it was on Thursday that I was told he had gone though I messaged the kennels every day to see how he was.
The moment we got home, we went looking for him but we didn’t know the area. My daughters Karla and Leanne took a tent and camped out to keep looking for Jude and they con-firmed a number of sightings of him. There were leaflet drops, drones put up and ground searches and posters. Social media was flooded with his photo and we got news of lots of sightings which helped. On Sunday night, my grandson Caidon who is nine, his mum Ashleigh and their dog Bonnie, went with us to the location of a reported sighting by a kind man and there Jude was.

8 . The juggling (玩杂耍) club, Strong Jugglers, held its 11th annual show last Friday night. Formed in 1995, Strong Jugglers often went to Strong Memorial Hospital to juggle for children to encourage them to recover from their illness. The jugglers haven’t been to the hospital in recent years due to COVID-19, but the club’s co-president, Regan Collins, hopes they can return soon.
She first joined the club in her first year after watching their juggling event at Party on the Quad and then later practicing on Wilson Quad where she was recruited by the then president. Regan had no previous juggling experience, which she said was very common among new members.
When asked about her juggling with different things, Regan remarked, “Juggling was definitely a bigger mental block for me. My initial reaction was to keep myself away from juggling. But once you get past the mental block, it will get easier. Of course, you always have to be careful and conscious when you’re juggling different things.”
In response to her thoughts about the upcoming performance, Regan said she was excited, especially since a lot of their friends were coming back, but was also nervous because this would be their first big performance since COVID-19 hit.
The performance began at 8:00 pm in front of the clock tower. The jugglers were cheered on by the crowd and most notably by a person working in the snack stand behind them, who yelled out encouraging statements, such as “You did a good job!” while slapping (拍) the table in applause.
“Some people just stopped by for a few minutes, but we kept most people watching for a long time. I was proud of everyone who got up to perform,” Regan said after the event. “That was the largest crowd in my memory. I was proud that we had brought joy to the audiences.”

9 . Every April, I find myself troubled by the same concern—that spring might not occur this year. The landscape looks dull, with hills, sky and forest appearing gray. On May 3, I awoke to a green so amazing as to be almost electric, as if spring were simply a matter of pressing a switch. Hills, sky and forest revealed their purples, blues and green.
Then there was the old apple tree. It sits on an undeveloped lot in my neighborhood. It belongs to no one and therefore to everyone. The tree’s dark branches stretch out in unpruned (未经修剪的) abandon.
Until last year, I thought I was the only one aware of this tree. And then one day, in a bit of spring madness, I set out to prune (修剪) a few disorderly branches. No sooner had I arrived under the tree than neighbors opened their windows and stepped onto their porches (门廊). These were people I barely knew, but it was as if I had come uninvited into their personal gardens. My mobile-home neighbor was the first to speak. “You’re not going to cut it down, are you?” she asked anxiously.
Soon, half the neighborhood joined me under the apple tree. It struck me that I had lived there for five years and only now was learning these people’s names, what they did for a living and how they passed the winter. It was as if the old apple tree was gathering us under its branches for the purpose of both acquaintanceship and shared wonder.
Just the other day, I saw one neighbor at the local store. He remarked how this recent winter had been especially long and complained of not having seen or spoken at length to anyone in our neighborhood. And then, he looked at me and said, “We need to prune that apple tree again.”
