One day, my brother and I were in our apartment. My parents had both gone for a party and had left me in charge of everything. I was doing my homework while my younger brother was watching TV. All of a sudden, the doorbell rang. Dingdong! Dingdong! My younger brother had rushed to the door before I decided to answer the door. We both thought that our parents had come home. As a result, he unlocked the door and opened it.
Outside of the house stood a man who wore a black raincoat and black rubber boots. He looked no different from other people and said that he was a salesman and asked politely if our mother or father was at home so he could talk with them.
Without thinking, my brother said,“No.” He asked if we would like to buy some comic books (漫画书), which he was selling. I quickly explained to him that we were not supposed to buy anything without our parents’ permission. However, it seemed that he was not willing to follow my advice and he had an intention to enter our house.
Then, I realized something terrible would happen. As I was about to close the door, he forced his way into our house. He forced me to tie up my brother’s hands with the rope which he took out from his pocket. I tied up his hands but tied it in a special way so my brother could untie (解开) it himself as we often did. The man then tied my hands up and locked both of us in the kitchen.
Soon, he went upstairs to search the bedroom for something valuable. I managed to teach my brother to untie the rope on his hands. He then untied it for me. I rushed to the telephone to call the police, but the line was dead.

2 . One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn’t have food, water or a phone. He was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
He decided to stop skiing. There would be a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to seek shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn’t, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him. Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.
By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn’t lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas huddled (蜷缩) in his cave and slept.
The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn’t find anyone. He had to follow his tracks and return to the snow cave. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out again to seek help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. Having been stuck in the snow for two days, Nicholas was saved.
Had it not been for TV, Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm. He had often watched Bear Grylls’ survival show Man vs.Wild. That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life. When Bear heard about Nicholas’ amazing deeds, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.

David is a 22-year-old man. Not having received a college education, he found it difficult to find a job. He worked at a small company and wasn’t paid well. He thought life was unfair and often complained.
One day, his boss asked him to go to his office. To his sadness, he was told he didn’t need to come to work again.
That day, David didn’t go straight back to the small apartment he shared with another man. He wanted to find a quiet place and sit there quietly for some time. Having lost his job, he had no idea what to do.
He walked and walked. Finally he stopped in front of a beautiful house. The house had a very big garden behind it. He saw an old man sitting in the garden.
“The old man must be a millionaire,” thought David. “How I wish I were him! If I were him, I wouldn’t have to work and I’d have a large amount of money. I would be the happiest man in the whole world.
Thinking how poor he was, David was even sadder. He hurriedly walked forward and found a place and sat there quietly.
Finally, he became hungry and decided to go back home. On his way back home, he passed the old man’s house again. This time the man was sitting in his front yard. When David passed by him, he noticed that the old man was looking at him. The old man looked as if he admired him very much. David was confused. Why would such a rich man admire him? He was so poor while he was so rich.
Finally, David decided to have a talk with the old man. So he stopped and walked to the old man.
”Hello,“ he said.
”Hello,“ said the old man.
Then they started talking. David told the old man he really admired him.
”You have such a beautiful house. You’re so rich! How I wish I were you!“ said David.
Hearing that, the old man smiled and said, ” And I admire you, too! I wish I were you! If I were you, I’d still enjoy my youth. Now I’m so old. Wealth doesn’t mean much to me!“

6 . Many people, some even at a very young age, set the goal of graduating from college. One American woman in Texas waited a long time for her chance to reach that goal.
The woman, 85yearold Janet Fein, received her bachelor’s degree (学士学位) from the University of Texas in December, 2018.
Fein has had a full life. She raised five children and then had a career as a secretary (秘书) until she retired at age 77. But even then, she was not ready to take it easy and rest during a wellearned retirement. She decided to major in sociology.
Fein grew up in the Bronx area of New York City. In high school, she just wanted to finish and get a job. After graduating early, at the age of 16, she went to work as a secretary.
After getting married, she spent 18 years staying home with her children. She held several jobs throughout her life, including being a secretary at a Dallas hospital. That is the job she retired from in 2011. She received an associate degree (专科学位) in 1995. But she also wanted to earn a bachelor’s degree. Fein took part in a state program that lets people who are 65 and older take free classes at public universities in Texas.
She kept going to class even as her health condition worsened. During her studies, it became necessary for her to use a walker to get around and she required oxygen. She also developed knee problems. So, Fein took online classes to finish the last part of her degree requirements.
Renee Brown is one of Fein’s caregivers. She says Fein has also inspired her. At 53, she plans to begin nursing school to further her career. Brown says Fein told her, “Renee, you can do it. If I can do it you also can do it, and you will feel so good about it.”

7 . Age has never been a problem for 16yearold Thessalonika ArzuEmbry. After all, she’s already got her master’s degree.
The North Chicagoarea teen started homeschooling at the age of 4. She began having an influence on others soon. When she was 6 years old, she was an inspirational (鼓舞人心的) speaker at an organization called Tabitha House Community Service, a shelter for people who were forced to leave their homes due to the situations such as earthquakes, flood and other natural disasters.
At the age of 11, she graduated from high school and then earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2013. She completed those classes online as she was traveling for leadership meetings.
She doesn’t stop there, though. The teen plans to focus on aviation psychology (航空心理学) for her further study, a decision inspired by her father who is a pilot. She grew up around airplanes and took flights all the time. Her goal is to use it to determine whether pilots are dealing with problems that could have deadly results once the plane takes off—a topic that has been in the news lately. For her, it’s a mix of two of her interests.
In her free time, Thessalonika enjoys playing tennis, swimming and being active in her youth group. She also has three selfpublished books, which are on her site. Recently Steve had a car accident. So he put his car in the garage to carry out the repair work. Since he had to go to the job daily, he decided that until the car was ready, he would travel by subway. One day, he noticed a homeless guy at the subway station at night. He felt pity for him, so he gave him some change from his pocket.
The homeless guy thanked him for it. Next day again, he noticed the homeless guy at the same place. This time Steve thought to get him something to eat, so he went outside the station and brought him a meal. The homeless guy thanked him for his kindness. But Steve got curious and asked him, “How did you get to this point?”
The homeless guy looked up at him and with a smile, he said, “By showing love.” Steve didn’t understand it, so he asked him, “What do you mean by that?” The homeless guy replied, “Throughout my whole life, I make sure that everyone is happy. No matter what is going right or wrong in my life, I always help everyone.”
Steve asked him, “Do you regret it?” The homeless man replied, “No, it just hurts my soul that the very people I gave the shirt off my back to wouldn’t give me a sleeve of that same shirt when I was in need. Son, it is better to build your own house and invite someone in for shelter than to hand them your bricks while you are building yours, because one day when you turn around and look at the spot where you had planned to build your house, it will be an empty lot. Then you are the one looking for bricks.” Steve thanked him for the good advice, and he left.

Azimi and Daud sat in the sunshine teaching their pet monkey, Hitam, to do tricks. “Hitam will do anything we do,” Azimi told his brother. “He’s the smartest monkey in Malaysia!”
Daud clapped his hands. The monkey clapped his hands. “Stop, Hitam,” Daud said. Hitam stopped. Azimi did a somersault (翻筋斗). The monkey did somersault after somersault. “Stop, Hitam,” Azimi said. Hitam stopped.
“Azimi! Daud!” their mother called from the house. “Your father is fishing today. You need to pick one hundred coconuts (椰子) to sell at the market tomorrow.” “OK, Mom!” the boys shouted. They got the cart and pulled it to the coconut forest. Hitam followed them. Twenty-five feet above them coconuts hung on the branches.
“That’s high,” Daud said. “I wish our father was like Uncle Tahar. He uses monkeys to get the coconuts.”
“We have a monkey,” Azimi said. “He’s smart. He will do whatever we do.”
Azimi grabbed Daud’s head and bent his ears. “Break it off!” Azimi twisted (转动) Daud’s head. Hitam reached for the brown fruit and twisted until the coconut broke off the stem. He let go of the coconut. It fell to the ground at Azimi’s feet.
“Another one, Hitam! Drop another one!” Azimi called. Hitam dropped another coconut, and another. Hitam picked so many they didn’t fit in the cart. Azimi and Daud put them into piles.
Daud looked at the huge piles. “We must have two hundred coconuts,” he said. Azimi looked up at Hitam. “OK, Hitam, come down now.” Hitam climbed down the tree.
Azimi and Daud dragged the cart to the house, unloaded coconuts, and went back for more. Back and forth they went until all the fruit sat in the front yard.
