1 . Jimmy Choi is a cyclist, and a world record holder for push-ups. He also happens to be living with Parkinson’s disease. He was diagnosed with the brain disorder in 2003, suffering from involuntary shaking and problems with walking and balancing. There is currently no cure. Jimmy has to quit the sports. Soon he commits himself to being a motivational speaker and advocating for people with the disease.
Jimmy often shares his struggles on social media, and in a recent video, he expressed his annoyance at the packaging of the pills he needs to take. It showed his shaking hand trying to get a tiny pill from the bottle. Jimmy wasn’t the only one facing such a problem. Brian Alldridge, a videographer, saw his video and immediately decided to do something to help him and everyone else dealing with this problem. He sat down at his computer and taught himself 3D modeling software. Within two days, Brian designed a new medicine bottle that separates a single pill in a container.
Brian made his own video and offered his design free of charge to anyone with a 3D printer who would be willing to create a physical prototype. “I expected maybe one or two people to message me when I couldn’t guarantee that the device would actually work. Instead, thousands of people offered to print the thing the next day,” Brian said, feeling so surprised. “Even more told me that someone they knew could benefit from it.”
The online community took it from there, printing out many versions of Brian’s design until they had a prototype to send to Jimmy. Jimmy was just surprised by their support, and he eagerly tested every version of it. The creators of the pill bottle now feel like there’s nothing they can’t do! “If you think of a way to improve the lives of others, there’s most likely a way to make it happen.” Brian said.

Fifty-year-old Gayle had been living with her pet dog Jennifer for eight years. She had no child, so she treated Jennifer as her daughter. One night, Gayle suddenly found that Jennifer, who was always lying beside her at night, was not there, so she got up at once and checked the whole house. However, Jennifer was nowhere to be found, making Gayle very worried.
Gayle tried to be optimistic and told herself that Jennifer might return soon. However, Jennifer still didn’t appear the next morning. Gayle then called her nephews and friend Tracy for help. When they arrived, they comforted Gayle first. Then they started searching the neighbourhood, the streets and nearby blocks for any sign of Jennifer, but they still didn’t find Jennifer by lunchtime the next day.
Gayle then decided to search the neighborhood again. She couldn’t explain it, but she had a feeling that Jennifer was somewhere nearby. Tracy accompanied Gayle in the search to offer help and support. After hours of searching, they got tired and decided to return home to rest for a while so that they could have more energy to search later on that day. They began walking back to Gayle’s home in a very depressed mood.
On their way back, they heard a cry coming from an abandoned shed (棚屋). They ran over to the shed immediately. When they broke into it, they found a large hole in the ground. And to their surprise, Jennifer was there wagging her tail.

5 . Ever since Lucy Nabiki Takona was a young girl growing up in a village in Kenya, she knew she wanted to have a career in education.
So when her father told her when she was 14 that she would have to drop out of school to marry the son of her father’s friend, she ran away. It took her three days to walk through the bush to her aunt’s house.
“I was used to walking, so for me it was not something big,” Takona says, “It was more scary to get married than walk on your own in the bush.”
Later, Takona’s aunt talked to some influential elders in the community who were able to persuade her father to let her continue her schooling – while schooling for many Masai girls ends in their early teen years.
As a child, Takona says, she thought her only career option as a woman was to be a teacher. But during a trip to the Nairobi National Museum in her last year of high school, she realized there were other possibilities. “A woman took us around the museum and she really had knowledge, so from that day forward I knew girl’s could be something more than teacher.” Takona says.
So she went to study at the Koiyaki Guiding School for two years on a scholarship from a volunteer travel organization African Impact. She then worked for the group as a guide for 18 months in return.
But on the road to success, Takona has had to make personal sacrifices. She is the single mother of a 4-year-old boy. “It’s rare in a Masai community to be a independent woman,” says Evaline Sintoya Mayetu, who was the first Masai woman to get the Silver Guide Qualification in March 2015. “I would like to see more Masai women go for not only the Silver Guide Qualification but go to school, to have a career of their own and break some barriers of traditional culture.”

6 . When I was looking for a Christmas present for my daughter in toy store, a nicely dressed little girl, with some money in her little hand, was looking at some beautiful dolls. When she saw a doll she liked, she would ask her father if she had enough money. He usually said yes.
At the same time, a boy, with old and small clothes, was looking at some video games. He, too, had money in his hand, but it looked no more than five dollars. Each time he picked up one of the video games and looked at his father, he shook his head.
The little girl had chosen her doll, a very beautiful one. However, she noticed the boy and his father. She saw the boy give up a video game with disappointment and walk to another comer of the store.
The little girl put her doll back to the shelf and ran over to the video game. After she talked to her father, she paid for the video game and whispered (耳语) to the shop assistant.
So the boy got the video game that he wanted for free — he was told it was a prize from the store. He smiled happily, although he felt it was so incredible.
The girl saw all this happen. She smiled, too.
When I walked out of the store to my car, I heard the father ask his daughter why she had done that. I would never forget their short talk. “Daddy, didn’t Grandma want me to buy something that would make me happy?”
He said, “Of course, she did.”
“Well, I just did!” With that, the little girl started skipping (蹦跳) towards their car happily.

Paul’s Birthday Surprise
Paul woke up feeling very happy. Today was his birthday. Paul was now 5 years old. At breakfast, Dad poured some milk into a bowl for Paul and handed him a piece of bread. “See you later, Paul.” Dad said. Dad took his lunch with him in a hurry and ran out the door. Paul ate a bite of bread, feeling upset. Dad always made him a special pancake with delicious chocolate chips. Did Dad forget his birthday?
Paul looked across the table at his baby brother Tom, who was only one year old. He needed help to do everything. Tom banged the table and laughed happily when Mum put some baby food into his mouth. “Mum, can we go to the park today?” Paul asked, with his eyes shining with eagerness. Mum looked over Tom’s head to look out the kitchen window. “I don’t think so,” she said, “it looks like it will rain.” Hearing this, Paul was buried in disappointment. He wanted his birthday to be special and memorable. However, everything wasn’t going in the way as he had expected.
After breakfast, Mum had to give Tom a bath. Tom was an untidy eater, with food and milk sticking to his face and hair. Mum put him in the bath tub and began to scrub (擦洗). She reached for the shampoo (洗发水), but it was empty. “Paul, please come here!” Paul got to the bathroom and Mum handed him Tom’s favorite rubber duck, saying to Paul, “Please play with your little brother until I get a new shampoo bottle.”

9 . A 99-year-old Australian swimmer appears to have broken a world record for his age group in the 50m freestyle. The likely new world record holder, George Corones, clocked 56.12 seconds at an official event in Queensland— a new benchmark for the 100-104 age category. He faded the previous record of 1:31. 19, which was set by British swimmer John Harrison in 2014, by 35 seconds. It will now be affirmed by the sports governing body.
Corones, who is qualified for the record because he turns 100 in April, said he was “quite delighted” and “over the world” by the result. He said he had been overwhelmed by the “roaring” crowd on the Gold Coast on Wednesday. The event, in which he was the only entrant (新成员), had been specifically staged for him to challenge the record.
Corones was a keen swimmer in his youth but only began to learn swimming again at the age of 80. He gave it up at the beginning of the World War II, and he didn’t think he would have a swim of any description until he retired. Then he started swimming again for exercise.
Racing undeniably (不可否认的) challenged him physically, but it was manageable with preparation. On average he swims three times a week, and also fits in gym sessions. “At this age it takes a while to get going... you get exhausted much more easily, but if you do it properly, the rewards are astronomical,” he said.
Corones will challenge the 100m freestyle record on Saturday night, believing he can beat the current mark of 03:23. 10, which was also set by Harrison.
“I’m not a young man by any means, but I am really looking forward to it and confident I can do it very well,” he said.
