Jonny took his dog, Scruffy, out for a walk on a cold day in December. He bundled up in his heavy winter coat and put on his thick wool cap before he said goodbye to his mom. Outside the front door, the whole world was like a winter wonderland: there were icicles (冰柱) hanging from tree branches and snow banks that rose all the way up to Jonny’s knees. Scruffy was excited to be outside, digging in the snow and jumping into snow. Jonny was also glad to be out in the cold air.The snowstorm that left all this snow had continued for two days, and he hadn’t been allowed to go outside, even just to catch some air!
They walked through Jonny’s neighborhood, passing people who looked glad to be outside, too. A few blocks down, Jonny saw his friend Marcus building a snowman with his sister, Marie.
“Hi, Marcus!” Jonny called out.He walked over to the snowman.
“Hey, Jonny. You want to help?” Marcus was patting the bottom part of the snowman ith his glove, while Marie was rolling together the second section of the snowman, packing the snow together to make sure it stayed in a round shape.
Jonny walked over and wrapped Scruffy’s leash (皮带) around Marcus’s mailbox. To- gether, Jonny, Marcus, and Marie built an amazing snowman. They made a long pointy nose the snowman, and designed eyes out of green apples Marie found in the house. They made e snowman’s arms out of two longer sticks, setting them up to make it look like he was waving. Sometimes Jonny would look over whether Scruffy would be digging again, but he mostly sat patiently, watching Jonny, Marcus, and Marie work.
When they were all done, Marcus and Marie’s mom came outside to see their work. “This is an amazing snowman!” she said. “Does anyone want hot chocolate?”

It was a day just like every other day. I woke up early in the morning and went to run on Mount Gracious with my dog, Bubbles. As I ran up the mountain, with my dog following close behind, I felt energetic and refreshed. Running in a natural environment never failed to make me feel alive. When I reached the top, I drank some water and enjoyed the beautiful sunrise. This scene always took my breath away, no matter how many times I had seen it.
Having rested enough, Bubbles and I made our way back down the mountain. As we were running downhill, I saw an unfamiliar path and decided to explore the area. The path was full of rocks. It was not easy to walk.
Suddenly, I slipped on a muddy patch, rolling down five meters before I managed to grab hold of an exposed root of a huge tree. I was safe for now. However, I was seriously injured. My knees were badly hurt. My right foot was also dislocated (脱臼). I knew for sure I would be unable to make my way up or down the mountain without help. I called out to Bubbles and he barked loudly from above. It seemed like he understood that I needed help. He looked down at me pitifully before disappearing from sight.
As night fell, panic (恐慌) set in and scary thoughts went through my mind. There were many things that I had got to do. I couldn't die! This would not have happened if I had stuck to my usual path.
I was losing hope when I heard barking. It was Bubbles. I rubbed my eyes as I struggled to keep awake. But there was silence. Who could it be? Was I hallucinating (产生幻觉)? Then I heard some voices and more barking. Yes. Help was near, I knew. I could count on my dog to get help.

4 . Charles Darwin was a very famous scientist who lived in the 1800s. His ideas about evolution (进化) completely changed the way scientists understand the natural world. He recorded his ideas in notebooks marked with letters of the alphabet (字母表), which have been considered extremely important for showing how he developed the evolution.
The Cambridge University Library had several of Mr. Darwin’s notebooks. The two that were missing were kept in a small box, and were last seen in 2000. In 2001, someone noticed that the box was missing. Luckily, the library had taken pictures of the notebooks’ pages, so the information wasn’t completely lost.
In 2020, the library made a huge effort to find the books. Workers searched through the 10 million books and other things in the library, but they didn’t find the notebooks. Finally, the library asked people around the world to help look for the books. They officially reported the missing notebooks as stolen so that the police around the world would search for them.
Nobody could ever have expected the way in which the notebooks were returned recently: in a pink gift bag with a note that said “Librarian, Happy Easter, X”. People at the library quickly recognized the blue box that the notebooks had been stored in. Inside a brown envelope they found the two missing notebooks, tightly wrapped in plastic. After the police had examined the package, library workers were able to open and carefully study the notebooks. They were pleased to learn that the notebooks were in good shape. They hadn’t been damaged and they weren’t missing any pages.
The timing of the return is perfect. The library was planning a show called “Darwin in Conversation”, which is set to open in July. Now the missing notebooks can be part of that show.

7 . No other name in Hollywood shines as bright as the name Oprah Winfrey.
Before all the success were years of struggle and various walls she had to work to break down. As she was starting off on television, she received backlash for her looks, for her skin color, for her curly hair, and for her overweight body. She was a career woman who found no interest in having her own children. These were all things about Oprah Winfrey that made her, at first, an unappealing and controversial character.
At the age of 3, she could already recite poems. At the age of 17, she was offered an on-air job at WVOL, a radio station serving the African American community in Nashville, where she continued to work through the beginnings of her college years. She won a full scholarship in Tennessee State University where she majored in Speech Communications and Performing Arts. After finishing her degree, she signed on with a local TV station, and from there on out, things started looking up for her.
Word of her talent in hosting got around, and eventually she was invited to host a program on WLS-TV. In less than a year, ratings picked up, and AM Chicago became one of the most popular programs in the area. In September 1985, the program was renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show. Her show began airing nationally in 1986, and since then, she has started several shows, built her own network, and published her own magazine. With this powerhouse performer working around the clock, she did more than just break a glass ceiling or a racial barrier. She built a media empire from the ground up.
Influential, powerful, independent, self-made-these are typically the words that come to mind when people attempt to describe her. If there can only be one word to describe Oprah Winfrey, it's “determined”.

C.The success of Winfrey in some aspects. | D.The influence of The Oprah Winfrey Show. |
A.Her own struggle. | B.Her good luck. |

I went to the beach nearby for some relaxing time myself. After a tiring week, all I wanted was a book, some loneliness, and a good snack. It was a lovely time watching people come and go for a warm weekend here in California. Kids were joyfully playing in the water, row boating, building sandcastles and sharing meals with their family.
After a few hours, I decided to walk along the waves to get to my car on the other side as I was leaving. As I was near the end and about to head off the beach, I noticed a girl playing by herself, maybe around 8 or 9. It looked like she built a little sandcastle with a moat (护城河) around it and was now trying to fill the moat with water.
Unfortunately, there was no container around to carry water or the usual sand toys. She was playing alone, unlike most of the other kids. She would go to the waves, cup her hands and then walk back to her little castle. Sadly not much of the water was making it to the moat. But she kept trying and was still smiling and hopeful. I so wished I could help her out, but I didn't have a container with me.
As I was standing there watching her, feeling helpless, I had an idea. I realized that I had a bottle of water in my bag that I had completely forgotten about. I quickly dug in, took it out, and walked over to hand it to her.
Confused at first, she smiled but shook her head shyly, saying no. I told her that it would make getting the water much faster. She smiled broadly and finally took it from my hands. Not wanting her to feel uncomfortable, I walked off the beach right away and watched her in the distance.

The river was dry. Clara could not remember the last time water had flowed along it. It had not rained for a long time and the tanks were almost dry. She would have to order water in again and that would cost money-- something she did not have a lot of. Ever since her brother Scott, decided he wanted nothing more to do with the farm and left, she had been struggling. Her parents were too old for farm work and it was difficult to hire help. People were leaving the countryside as jobs in the city paid more. Clara had no solution.
The following week, Clara drove to a town. On the way back, she saw a sign advertising a bed and breakfast. She knew that was the answer. She had read many stories about people living in the city wanting a countryside experience. Her family could offer accommodation(住宿) and meals at their farm at a reasonable price.“Maybe I can also charge an additional fee if guests are keen to experience farming activities,” she wondered. Now all she had to do was convince her parents.
“No,” Dad said. “This is a working farm, not a farm stay for people who can’t tell a horse from a cow.”
“I really don’t think we have a choice, Dad. Half the sheep are dead and the ones left aren’t that far behind. If we get paying guests, we can buy more feed and get more water brought in,” Clara said.
“If we don’t do this, John, we may not be able to keep this place running for much longer,” Anna, Clara’s mum said.
John nodded finally. “Just one condition—if the guests mess up my farm, this will have to stop immediately. “They prepared the house for guests. Clara placed the first advertisement. The day the advertisement appeared, they received three reservations. Then, Clara began worrying about their decision. What if the guests were unreasonable and demanding and the food was not good enough? Clara had prepared as much as she could. She just hoped the first guests would be nice.
