When I was little, I lived in a house with a beautiful garden full of all kinds of Bowers. There was nothing I enjoyed more than sitting in the garden with my mother reading stories to me. When I was old enough to read, I enjoyed reading stories aloud to her.
I would never forget one day when I was in the third grade. I bad been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed (排练) my lines so hard with me. But however easily I acted at home, the moment I stepped on stage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside, explaining that she had written a narrator’s (解说员) part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her word, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home after school that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to take a walk in the garden.
It was May and roses were blossoming and, under the trees, we could also see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass, as if a painter had painted our garden with red, yellow and green. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. ”I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. ”From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden. ”
“But I like dandelions,” I protested, “All flowers are beautiful-even dandelions.” “Yes, every flower is beautiful in its own way, isn’t it?” she asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.” Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled to me gently.

It was 11 p.m. when Alex Conrad saw the woman on the Main Street Bridge. She was standing by the railing, peering down at the rushing Chippewa River below. At her feet was what appeared to be a backpack.
Maybe she’s fishing, Conrad, then 20, thought as he continued driving his car to his home a short distance away. His friend’s car had broken down, so Conrad was making a quick pit stop to grab some tools before heading out to help.
Tools in hand, he climbed into his car. Instead of taking a shortcut, though, he chose to head back over the bridge. Something about that woman didn’t sit right. Why would she be fishing this late at night— in May, when it’s still cold in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin?
As he crossed the quarter-mile-long bridge, Conrad saw the woman standing in the same spot. He pulled a U-turn and parked on a zebra crossing some 20 feet away with the hazards lights flashing, blocking one of the four lanes. In case there was trouble, he hoped another driver would take note and help.
He stepped out of his car and got a clearer picture of the scene. The woman was in her 20s,dressed in pants and a heavy coat. What he’d thought was a backpack was in fact rope pooled by her feet. One end was tied to a bridge post. The other, around her neck.
“Hey, what’s going on?” Conrad called out. He pretended not to see the rope although he knew exactly what was going on.
She spoke unwillingly, but he kept probing(追问), eventually pulling from her that she was going through a particularly rough difficulty. She was jobs, not doing well in school—in short, life wasn’t working out as she’d hoped.

3 . It was the day before Thanksgiving and Kaleb Benham was wandering around outside his home in Noring California. His 90-pound pit bull, Buddy, was playing around nearby, doing what dogs do: getting into trouble. And this time, Buddy was getting into a whole lot of trouble.
The unmistakable sound that no one wants to hear alone in the woods caught Benham’s attention. It was the deep, strange roar of a black bear. Benham wheeled around to see the beast, which Benham figured weighed around 350 pounds, some 100 feet away. In an instant, the bear fastened on to Buddy’s head and started dragging him away.
Benham, a thin, fit 24-year-old, took off after them. “Honestly,” he told CBS13, “the only thing I could think of was ‘save my baby’.” Sprinting, he lowered his shoulder and plowed into the bear. But it only tightened its grip on Buddy. Benham grabbed the bear by the throat. Nothing. He tried getting its mouth open, but the jaw was locked tight. Benham resorted to street fighting—punching the bear over and over around its snout and eye. It worked. The bear dropped the dog and ran off into the woods.
Buddy was in bad shape. His face was bloodied and ripped up. His ears were dangling. He had a bite mark clear through his lip and one that barely missed an eye.
“My first thought was that I was going to lose him,” Benham said. He scooped up Buddy, put him into his car, and sped off to a nearby veterinarian. Buddy’s surgery took nearly four hours. Benham watched the procedure through a window. “I just stood there,” he said, watching as Buddy’s ears were stapled back on and skin flaps were stitched, and tubes were inserted into his head to drain fluid.
This was the second time Benham had rescued Buddy, says CBS13. The first was from a shelter a few years ago. “If it was your kid, what would you do?” he asked. Nodding toward Buddy, he added, “That’s my kid.”

She was a large woman with a large purse that had everything in it. It had a long strap(带子), and she carried it slung(挂) across her shoulder, It was about eleven o’clock at night, and she was walking alone, when a boy ran up behind her and tried to grab her purse. The strap broke with the single hard pull the boy gave it from behind. But the boy’s weight and the weight of the purse combined caused him to lose his balance so the boy fell on his back. The large woman simply turned around and kicked him.
Then she picked the boy up by his shirt front, and said, “Pick up my purse. boy, and give it to me.” She bent down enough to permit him to bend and pick up her purse. “Now, aren’t you ashamed of yourself?”
“I’m very sorry, lady, I’m sorry,” whispered the boy, He looked as if he were fourteen or fifteen, weak, thin and willow-wild, in worn tennis shoes and blue jeans.
“Um-hum! Your face is dirty. I’ve got a great mind to wash your face for you. Don’t you get anybody home to tell you to wash your face?”
“No, madam.” said the being-dragged boy.
She dragged him up the street. When she got to her door, she dragged the boy inside, down a hall, and into a large kitchen-furnished room.
She asked. “What is your name?”
“Roger,” answered the boy.
“Then, Roger. you go to that sink and wash your face,” said the woman, whereupon she turned him loose at last Roger looked at the door-looked at the woman-looked at the door—and went to the sink. When Canadian couple Edith Lemay and Sebastien Pelletier first noticed that their daughter Mia was having vision problems, she was just three years old.
A few years after they first took her to see a specialist, Mia, the eldest of their four children, was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa(视网膜色素变性), a rare genetic condition that causes a loss or decline in vision over time.
By this point, Lemay and Pelletier, who’ve been married for 12 years, had noticed that two of their sons, Colin, now seven, and Laurent, now five, were experiencing the same symptoms. Their fears were confirmed when in 2019 the boys were diagnosed with the same genetic disorder. Their other son Leo, now nine, was given the all clear. There’s nothing they can really do, because there is currently no cure or effective treatment to slow down the progression of retinitis pigmentosa.
Once they came to terms with the news, the couple focused their attention on helping their children build the skills they’d need to lead their way through life. When Mia’s specialist suggested that they absorb her with “visual memories”, Lemay realized that there was one truly incredible way that they could do just that for her and the rest of the children.
“I thought, ‘I’m not going to show her an elephant in a book. I’m going to take her to see a real elephant’,” she explains.“And I’m going to fill her visual memory with the best, most beautiful images I can.”
She and her husband soon began making plans to spend a year traveling around the globe with their kids. They think there are great things to do at home, but there’s nothing better than traveling. Not only the scenery, but also the different cultures and people.
After gathering up enough savings, they soon began their family journey with an in-depth itinerary (行程) that involved traveling through Russia by land, and spending time in China.

The homemade book bag was placed across my bed. It appeared to have taken over the entire room. I knew that my mom had spent all day happily sewing as she pictured me proudly walking from class to class with it over my shoulder. The next day I was to start seventh grade at a new school, in a new state, in the middle of the school year. I was nervous and excited.
That first day at school I heard the whispers.“Have you seen the new girl? She’s from California. Did you see that big bag?”Then there were giggles (咯咯笑).
Because I started school in the middle of the year, all of the lockers had been assigned to other kids. There was no extra locker available for me, so I was forced to carry all my stuff around in the oversized bag. Wild stories flew back and forth about what I kept in the bag that never left my side. Drugs? Some kids wondered. Clothes? Is she homeless?
There was nothing interesting in that bag, just my coat during cold weather, school books, papers and pens. Eventually, most students pretty much ignored me, but some of the kids made fun of my bag. People grabbed at it, pretended to treat it like a dog and tried to drop litter into it. My teachers didn’t seem to notice, probably because I didn’t ever complain or ask for help. As the year progressed, I started to hate that bag. I blamed all my problems on it. I felt helpless, alone and homesick for California and my old friends.
One day toward the end of the school year, my math teacher assigned each student a partner to work with on word problems. I was told to work with Debbie, a popular girl who was in several of my classes. She smiled and waved me over toward her desk, so I grabbed my bag and quietly moved toward her. As I sat down, I realized that I had never spoken to her before.

The man had reason for being paid because this was not his job He was assisting her in her time of need. Instead, he told her that if she genuinely wanted to repay him, she should help someone in need the next time she saw one“ And at that time, think of it as payment for this deed of mine” the man added.
On the way back to her destination, the old lady noticed a small cat a few miles down the road. She pulled over and went in to relax and grab a bite before the final leg of her journey.
