文章大意:本文是说明文。文章探讨了什么是内心的声音,和内心声音的影响以及要善待内心的声音。

3 . Make friends with your inner voice

Most people have an inner voice.     1     What you say to yourself, and how you say it, makes a difference to how you think, feel and behave, so it’s worth paying attention to it.

What is your inner voice?

Your inner voice is always with you, giving a commentary inside your head. You might notice it when you make a mistake, when you try something new, or when you solve a problem.     2    Sometimes it sounds kind but at other times it can sound mean or scared. Young people’s coach Maria Evans says it should be treated with kindness. “It gets scared when you think about doing something that feels stretchy.     3     ” Often all it needs is to be listened to and spoken to with love.

How does your inner voice affect you?

Your inner voice, also known as your self-talk, has an impact on you because you already pay attention to it.     4     If you keep telling yourself you can’t do maths or you’re no good at making friends or you’re not creative, over time you’ll believe what your inner voice is saying. When you talk to yourself using a phrase like “I’ve got to tidy my room,” it makes the task feel harder. If instead you say, “I choose to tidy my room, and then I’ll be able to find the things I want easily”, it’s more positive.

Befriend your inner voice.

5     For example, when you do something you felt nervous about, congratulate yourself for being brave and having a go. If you’re not sure what to say, imagine you’re talking to your best friend and trying to support and help them inside your head.

A.Your inner voice has different tones.
B.It’s the internal chatter that goes on inside your head.
C.So what you say to yourself, and what you hear, sinks in.
D.You’re telling yourself how you’ll benefit from tidying your room.
E.It can be helpful to talk to that voice with kindness and understanding.
F.When you make a mistake, tell yourself it’s OK and you’ll learn for next time.
G.Noticing your inner voice and talking encouragingly to yourself make you more confident.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It’s eight o’clock on Christmas morning, and my dad says he wants to listen to the news. My 11-year-old self is wondering why on Earth grown-ups would be interested in the news when there are important things to be done, such as handing out presents. And then, while I am only half-listening, something strange happens: the newsreader begins talking about a Christmas message. Hadn’t we heard that report earlier?

My older brother, Colin, figures out what’s happening. “Pete, Pete, it’s a tape recorder! We’ve got our tape recorder!”

It finally dawns on me: my dad recorded the news and is playing it back now.

Colin and I had both been blind from birth. At the special school that Colin and I attended, a recorder of your own was the height of desire. However, realistic about family finances, we had no real expectations of getting one.

The tape recorder my dad bought us would have cost more than four times his weekly wage. He could only afford it by borrowing the money. I know my mum and dad would have thought long and hard before being in the debt.

The new toy controlled the rest of the Christmas holidays. Once we had mastered the controls, we recorded anything and everything: each other, our parents, the milkman, the dog... and we very quickly learned how much fun we could have with it.

It wasn’t the first time I had been attracted by a tape recorder. I vividly remember walking into a room when I was four and hearing a child’s tuneless singing. I stopped dead. “It’s you,” Dad said.

It turned out that he had borrowed a tape recorder. So for the first time, in the same way that a sighted child might react to seeing themselves in a mirror, I got the sense of myself as a separate person who existed outside my head and was experienced by other people.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I did not know why I had chosen to be here. It felt as though my mind were at home, sitting and watching television, feeling relaxed and having fun, and yet my body was standing here in absolute fear. I looked in the mirror again. My face had been washed clean before applying the heavy make-up. My skin looked deathly white and powdered so that there was no shininess. My eyes looked dark and I was wearing lipstick. I should have been thrilled that I was allowed to wear make-up, but somehow, this didn’t feel like a treat.

Now I had to wait. How easy it should be to simply wait but this felt like a never-ending suffering. I stared at my white shoes as I stretched my feet, trying to distract myself from the way I felt. This dressing room was not small, but there were lots of girls in here. Mum and Dad were sitting in the audience but I was missing them so much. I wished they had been here with me. They were only on the other side of the stage, but that felt like a world away. The speaker asked for the black swans (天鹅) to get ready and as a sudden rush of girls danced into line and headed off towards the stage, I knew that I would be called next. My hands felt wet and sticky. I did not want to go on stage. I did not want the audience staring at me as I performed.

I tried to sit down but it was difficult when you were wearing a tutu (芭蕾舞裙). I wanted to rest my forehead on the mirror, but I knew that I would ruin my make-up and that wouldn’t do. The speaker was asking again, “Calling for white swans, will all white swans make their way to the stage?” I shook my arms, and joined the queue of other white swans. I felt really faint now and I wanted to be sick. I looked around in desperation, waiting to catch the eye of someone, anyone, who could get me out and save me.

7 . The incident took place, believe it or not, on the playground. I was something of a football player, but I had never been a good player, far less a great one. I played for the mere physical joy that I got out of the game, but I played with a will, and put my whole heart into the game. The result was that, though I had plenty of energy and enthusiasm, I was never picked for my college team.

Let me confess frankly that this was only because there was another player in the same position who happened to be much better than me. I considered myself the better sportsman, but he was certainly the greater player. So I never grumbled or complained. I was content to wait and bide my time.

And at last my patience was rewarded. It was for me a very special day. Our team had shot up into the final and was meeting its rival(竞争对手). Our starplayer sent word at the last moment that he was ill and he could not take the field. Imagine the astonishment in the college camp! The thought was that the game was as good as lost, and so also, I confess, did I for this player was our trump card(王牌): That is what everybody always said. However, something had to be done, and that something had to be myself! The captain called me up almost apologetically for having failed to recognize my greatness before, and—there I was, on the playground, greeted by the cheers of my friends, and a few jeers from those who had little faith in my prowess.

I can tell you that I played like a demon(魔鬼). I was here, there and everywhere—now leading the attack, now falling back to help the defense. It was indeed a thrilling moment in my life. For a time, I was the center of all attention, the object of universal applause, and “the observed of all observers”. And, believe it or not, it was I who put in the winning goal. It marked the top of a glorious day. Even now I look back on the episode with unmixed pleasure and satisfaction.

“JAMIE EVANS.”

Oh no. Please tell me that Coach Cafferty did NOT just say my name. Not for the one-hundred-meter breaststroke (蛙泳). Except all eyes were turned to me when she announced it, and her eyes met mine over the clipboard (剪贴板) that held the list of events and swimmers for the Plain Township Aquatic Center meet. The PTAC meet was the first of the season, and I was not ready.

“Remember, the meet is on Wednesday night. Be here at four-thirty for and the race kicks off at six. I’ll see you at practice tomorrow.” Coach Cafferty added. The crowd cleared quickly and I headed back home, feeling desperate.

“Did you find out your events for Wednesday?” Mom asked as she slid the pizza box across the table to me.

“Yeah. One-hundred breaststroke,” I finally said, not meeting her eyes. “I don’t know why Coach didn’t give me backstroke (仰泳). She knows it’s my best. I can’t swim breaststroke!”

“Maybe she sees something you don’t.” Mom said.

“Or maybe I should just quit the swim team.”

Mom frowned. “Is that what you want?”

I sighed. “No.” I took a bite of my pizza. “I’m terrible at breaststroke. What happens when I show up on Wednesday and race, and I sink to the bottom of the pool? Or even worse, come in last?”

“Someone has to be last.” Mom pointed out.

“But I don’t even know if I can swim breaststroke for one-hundred meters!” I set my pizza down. “She had submitted the names, but there’s no way I can do this.”

“You could. But how will you know unless you try?” Mom persuaded.

“Yeah, but if I try, I could fail. In front of everyone.” I pictured the entire crowd watching as I finished last, pointing and laughing. My belly squeezed.

Mom set her pizza down and gave me her I’m-saying-something-important-so-listen face. “Don’t worry about other people. Just race against yourself. Forget about anything else except doing your best and swimming your own race. Prove to yourself that you can do it.”

Somehow, there seemed a mysterious power in her words comforting my unsettling heart and I decided to have a try. The next day, I was at practice as required.
