6 . “Come and look! The green onions have grown a bit taller,” I waved at my wife, my eyes glued to a small plastic pot.

“Are you kidding?” she replied. “You only planted the seeds yesterday. How could it be so fast?” After a closer look, she murmured, as if to herself, “They have indeed inched up!”

About a week later, I “harvested” the first batch of green onions — the first time I had ever grown green onions by myself. Inspired by the unexpected success, I grew a second pot. They have been growing well.

The pleasant surprise from my “pot experiments” comes down to a simple pleasure from constant physical work.

“Farming, which enables one to work between heaven and Earth, can reward one with huge pleasure. As people cultivate the land, they are having a direct dialogue with nature that can hardly be possible if they stay behind closed doors in offices,” said Zhang Xiaode, director of the Research Center for Chinese Rural Civilization.

Cheng Minsheng, a professor of history and culture at Henan University, said many farmer-scholars during the Song Dynasty compiled (汇编) classical books on agriculture based on their lifelong experiences on farms.

A rural life not only provided these scholars with new ideas but also inspired philosophers. Martin Heidegger, one of the greatest philosophers of the 20th century, once called the countryside “the root of philosophy”.

Duan Elgin said in his bestselling book The Living Universe that farm life brought him “the gift of deep silence”. “I recall lying down in a field of lettuce (生菜), nearly covered by its leaves and taking in the aliveness of the Earth, the fields and the sky above me,” Elgin said. “Later on, I moved to the city, where I felt a deep separation from the aliveness of my farming days.”

When I look at the soil in my small plastic pots, I no longer treat it as dirt like I would in the past. As I water the soil with my hands, I feel it’s alive.

1. How does the author’s wife feel about the green onions?
A.Satisfied.B.Disappointed.C.Surprised.D.Anxious.
2. What bring huge pleasure according to Zhang Xiaode?

B.To indicate the benefits of farm life.
C.To explain the ways to grow lettuce.

4. What is the author’s attitude to physical work?
A.Negative.B.Unclear.C.Doubtful.D.Supportive.

Most mornings, the sun rose to greet the day and the bird sang its songs outside an upstairs window of the house. Inside the house Ollie and Noah would wake up. The brother and sister usually got along very well. They took turns nicely with the bathroom. They said “please” and “thank you at breakfast. They often sat together on the school bus. And after school they worked together happily on their special project — their own backyard house.

But one gray morning they didn’t get along well at all! Maybe it was the weather, or maybe it was because the bird slept late. But whatever it was, they got into a big fight.

Noah opened her eyes and stretched. Then she sat up and let her legs dangle (垂悬) over the edge of her bed-right in Ollie’s face. She didn’t do it to be rude. It was just one of those things that happens with bunk beds (双层床).

But that morning Ollie was not in a very good mood.

“Noah!” he shouted. “Get your stupid feet out of my face!”

“My feet aren’t stupid, and they’re not in your face!” she shouted back

Before Ollie could answer, she skipped into the bathroom ahead of him. She took a very long time brushing her teeth, washing up, and combing her hair.

“You’d better come out of that bathroom!” shouted Ollie, banging on the door.

“Ollie,” said Mama, coming out of her bedroom, “you know better than to shout at your sister.”

“But she’s taking too long in the bathroom,” complained Ollie, “and she’s doing it on purpose!”

When Ollie raised his fist to bang on the door again, it opened and out came Noah, all dressed up.

“Good morning, Mama,” she said, as nice as you please.

“Gr-r-r!” said Ollie.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了因车祸失去一条腿的Chad在有类似遭遇的朋友的鼓励下,积极面对生活,迎难而上,帮助他人的同时也救赎自己的故事。

9 . At age 23, Chad’s life was just beginning. But one night, a drunk driver crashed into his motorcycle and his leg was severely injured. To save the leg, Chad went through operation after operation, but in vain. When the doctor announced the leg had to come off, Chad sank into a bitter desperation. How would he function with only one leg? Would he have the family he had always dreamed of? And how would he ever pay off the hospital bills?

Nothing we did eased his deep frustration. One night, I brought Gene, the husband of my colleague, to Chad’s hospital room. Gene joked with Chad at once, telling him he was “on his last leg”. Chad exploded, “How can you talk like that when they’re going to cut off my leg?” Gene just bent over, rolled up his trousers and revealed his own prosthesis (假肢). I left them alone.

When I returned an hour later, the light had come back into Chad’s eyes. “Gene said that people who give to others always get back more than they give. He said I should not worry about my future and the most important thing was never to give up.”

Four months later, Chad was back at work. He remembered Gene’s words. He learned to ride a bicycle with his fake leg, swam one-legged and practiced running slow. However, the hardest problem was how he would ever get back on his “foot” financially. The hospital bills would take him thirty years to pay.

His doctor often called to ask him to rush to the hospital and offer comfort to an injury victim. No matter how tired Chad was, no matter when he was called, he would drop everything to help. One day, he received a different call. “Chad,” the doctor began, “I am calling to tell you that a stranger has just paid all your medical bills.”

Gene was right. People who give freely to others get back more than they give.

1. What can we learn about Chad after the accident?
A.He felt concerned about his future.B.He left the hospital in desperation.
C.He regretted riding the motorcycle.D.He refused to receive the treatment.
2. How did Gene manage to cheer Chad?
A.He tended Chad carefully and lovingly.
B.He offered some funny words of comfort.
C.He shared a similar story of his own with Chad.
D.He proved to be capable of swimming one-legged.
3. Which of the following best describes Chad?
