文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了人的思维对自我认知和自我发展的影响。

1 . Your mind is very powerful. Yet, if you’re like most people, you probably spend very little time reflecting on the way you think. After all, who thinks about thinking?

1     If you draw wrong conclusions about who you are and what you’re capable of doing, you’ll limit your potential.

Your thoughts are a catalyst(催化剂)for self-perpetuating(自我持续的)cycles.     2     So if you think you’re a failure, you’ll feel like a failure. Then, you’ll act like a failure, which reinforces(强化)your belief that you must be a failure.

I see this happen all the time in my therapy office. Someone will come in saying, “I’m just not good enough to advance in my career.” That assumption leads her to feel discouraged and causes her to put in less effort.     3

Once you draw a conclusion about yourself, you’re likely to do two things; look for evidence that reinforces your belief and discount anything that runs contrary to your belief. Someone who develops the belief that he’s a failure, for example, will view each mistake as proof that he’s not good enough.     4     Consider for a minute that it might not be your lack of talent or lack of skills that are holding you back. Instead, it might be your beliefs that keep you from performing at your peak.

5     That’s not to say positive thoughts have magical powers. But optimistic thoughts lead to productive behavior, which increases your chances of a successful outcome.

A.When he does succeed, he’ll owe it to luck.
B.That lack of effort prevents her from getting promoted.
C.Creating a more positive outlook can lead to better outcomes.
D.With conscious effort, you can learn to think more positively.
E.However, the way you think about yourself turns into your reality.
F.Once that belief gets deeply rooted in his mind, he will suffer a lot.
G.What you think directly influences how you feel and how you behave.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Nothing Extraordinary

It was a Saturday. The mall was packed with people. I was with my mom.

Mom is short, skinny. It is easy to overlook her in a crowd simply because she is nothing extraordinary to see.

On that day we went for another window shopping in a mall next to our apartment, peeking at window boutiques(时装店)in fleeting glances because we both knew we wouldn’t be buying much, like always.

I remember I was looking up at the people we passed as we walked—at first indifferently, but then more attentively.

Ladies wore bright, delicate clothing and five-inch heels that clicked importantly on the floor. Men stepped by smelling of sharp perfumes. An uneasy feeling started to settle in my chest. I tried to push it out, but once it took root, it refused to be rid of and tossed away: I was ashamed of my mother.

We were in a high-class neighborhood, I knew that. We lived in a small, overpriced apartment building that Mom chose to move to because she knew the schools were good.

We were in a high-class neighborhood, but as I examined the passers-by and then turned accusing eyes on Mom, I realized for the first time that we didn’t belong there.

I could see the heavy lines around Mom’s eyes and mouth, carved deep into her skin without luxurious creams to ease them away. She wore cheap, ragged clothes with the seams tom, shoes with the soles(鞋底)worn down. Her eyes were tired from working long hours to make ends meet and her hair was too gray for her age.

My mom is nothing extraordinary, yet at that moment she stood out because she was just so plain.

I don’t want to be seen with her, so I hurried away to the bathroom. When I finally made my way out with reluctant steps, Mom wasn’t in sight. I had to search door to door, only to find Mom was standing in the middle of a high-end store, holding a sweater that looked much too expensive.

3 . 阅读下面短文, 在空白处填入1个恰当的单词或者括号内单词的正确形式。

When we’re young, we fearlessly dream about what our lives might be like. Since I was very young, I have dreamed of working for the United Nations in some of the most troubled     1     (country) in the world. And thanks to a lot of courage, that dream finally came true.

But here's the thing about courage: It doesn’t just appear whenever we need it. It’s the result of tough     2     (consider) and real work, involving the balance     3     fear and bravery. Without fear, we’ll do foolish things. And without courage, we’ll never step into     4     unknown. The balance of the two is where the magic lies, and it’s a balance we all deal with every day...

I     5     (diagnose) with a disease called HIBM three years ago, which affects all my muscles from head to toe. It was frightening news, because I had no idea how the disease might progress. But what was     6     (extreme) disheartening was listening to other people advise me     7     (limit) my ambitions and dreams. So, I ignored them and continued to pursue my dream of working all over the world.

Life is already    8     (scare), so to make our dreams come true, we need to be brave. In facing my fears and     9     (find) the courage to push through them, I swear my life has been extraordinary. So live big and try to let your courage outweigh your fear. You never know     10     it might lead you in the life journey.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章指出很多人希望达到某个目标,结果却停在了研究如何达到目标的过程中。很多时候,不要等到准备充分了才开始行动,在实践中不断修正自己。

5 . Is it possible to learn too much? With so much information that’s available and accessible with just a click of a button, it’s impossible for any person to know everything there is to know. While this is true, there is still such a thing as learning too much, to the point where you get paralyzed in terms of taking action.

Have you ever wanted to achieve a goal and ended up doing tons of research on how to achieve the goal? As you learned more and more, it felt like you knew less and less because when you learned a new concept or strategy, you found that there was a lot more to know about those things.

Often times, people will get stuck in this trap of needing to gather more and more information. There’s nothing wrong with learning a lot, but when you let learning get in the way of doing, you will never get going. When you never get going, you still never start having the things you want in life.

A better way to go about achieving a goal is to gather some information and immediately start taking action on what information you have gathered. I realize that many times you will feel unprepared, and that’s okay. The best way to learn besides having someone who’s done what you want to do show you how to do it is to take action and learn from the results you get from those actions.

If a baby wanted to learn how to walk, it will never be able to do it by sitting there and analyzing how to walk. The best way for a baby to walk is to actually get up off its behind and start walking. Sure it may fall, but with every fall, it will learn what is working and what is not and adjust to it. By doing this over and over, it will eventually learn to walk. This is the approach you want to take when you want to achieve your goals as well. It works.

1. The underlined word “paralyzed” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ________.
A.unable to do anythingB.unhappy about the situation
C.satisfied with what you haveD.discouraged with what you face
2. What stops people from achieving the goal?
A.The confusion caused by the information.B.The new concept or strategy.
C.The desire to learn more.D.The trap of research.
3. The author compares ________ to “analyzing how to walk”.
A.the failure before achieving the goal
B.the awareness of challenges
C.gathering information
D.taking actions
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.Analyze Before Learning to Walk
B.Action Speaks Louder Than Information
C.Problems in Information Age
D.Approaches to Learning to Walk

9 . Think about what kind of person you're attracted to. Physical appearance likely plays a strong part, of course, as do kindness, humor and other qualities. If you're like me, you're attracted to impressive people.     1     They have qualities I admire but lack myself. Because I assume people with certain qualities would be most interested in those who share them. I don't even consider the possibility of developing a relationship with them.

2     If you're attracted to athletic people, for example, but don't regard yourself as fit or active, you may not think you stand a chance with the people you see working out at the gym. However, there are several mistakes with this way of thinking.

You shouldn't assume people are looking for someone who shares qualities they possess themselves.     3     They may really like to meet somebody from a completely different walk of life, other than the field of music.

The qualities you admire in other people may not be the same ones they identify(认同)in themselves. This applies to my example of impressive people.     4     While you may find their success, drive, and enthusiasm impressive, maybe they're looking for someone who knows how to step back and enjoy life.

And you are probably underselling your own positive qualities. You probably have qualities you may not find attractive but that some people will admire in you.

So it isn't worthwhile to worry about falling short of what you think other people want. All you can do is be yourself, show your best qualities, and see who responds to them. If there is one quality that never attracts anybody, it's doubt.     5

A.I've been struggling with these same things myself.
B.Maybe it's a writer, musician, doctor, lawyer, or soldier.
C.They may not view “impressive” in the same way you do.
D.This problem goes far beyond my specific example, though.
E.A musician isn't necessarily interested only in other musicians.
F.It prevents you from finding out whether your attraction is shared.
G.You can never know which things they want to share with their partners.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Probably, most of you had the feeling before, at least once—you had been waiting for a long time, yet being afraid of getting. It was exactly my state of mind before the first day at college. I had been working hard to pass the necessary tests and have my application to the undergraduate programme in management approved. And when the time had come for me to visit the college for the first day of the study,I couldn't sleep all night because of being anxious about how to look good physically in front of the whole new world I was about to enter. However, the positive attitude and readiness to accept support from others helped a lot in a new environment.

It was Monday morning. Being too excited to sleep the night before, I came to the college half an hour earlier for the first lecture and was walking nervously through the hallway. About 15 minutes after I came, the hallway started to be full of students. Professors who walked on their business probably didn't pay attention to me. I knew which hall to go to and had already checked that it was open. However,I was hesitant to enter the hall and sit there alone. People were moving around me as if they hadn't seen me. I felt disappointed with the fact that I had nobody to talk to in the new and seemingly unfriendly place.

Suddenly,a well-dressed man who seemed to be in his late twenties approached me. He introduced himself as Mathews and asked whether I was lost and whether he could help me with anything. In that situation,I realized it was very kind of him and that he was exactly the person I wanted to ask in my thoughts a minute before, but then I was too nervous for a friendly chat. As a result, instead of welcoming the opportunity to make the first acquaintance (相识), I told the man to mind his business and leave me alone since I was an adult capable of finding my class without anybody's assistance.
