I can still remember the afternoon when we climbed the mountain as if it were yesterday.
It was a sunny day. Eager to spend some time outside, I went up the mountain with my uncle. The mountain was hard
On the way back down, my uncle asked me a question,

3 . Youth shines through hardships; life is elevated through hard work.
Xi Jinping, Chinese President
“I don’t think about winning or losing during the competition. I just do my best, and the rewards come naturally,’’ Gu Ailing, freeskier from Chinese Olympic team, said in an interview.
When I had this interview with Gu in 2021, the young skier had just achieved record- breaking wins for two gold medals at the world championships in Aspen, US. But what impressed me most was how she treated her great achievements. While many people consider Gu talented, she believes she is just one of the many sports lovers, who with such pure passion, could overcome any obstacles or setbacks and enjoy doing what they love.
Her words struck a chord with me. As a young journalist covering the youth of today, I have written thousands of reports, digging up inspirational stories among Gen Zers who are born between 1995 and 2010. I also look tor different ways to make their stories known by more people, For example, I have made videos on hot topics while also writing articles.
My efforts have reaped fruits. On April 15, I was awarded as a national outstanding member of the Communist Youth League of China (CYLC).
I am so honored, but what makes me more thrilled is that some of my interviewees are also on the list. We are all exploring different career paths, but we share the same attitude toward our passions like Gu. This award, I believe, is for the spirit of Chinese young people.
For example, the awardees from the Sanxingdui Museum have a passion to bring the 3.000-year-old Sanxingdui relics back to life and reveal a magnificent civilization in history. In October 2021,1 went to the museum and interviewed two young restorers there. Through working with them I got to know that restoration is a long process, and they might repeat one single action carefully every day for several months. ”We are doing ordinary things and we just do our best, "said one of the restorers. This was how they saw their work.
I believe similar situations can be found in the story of every awardee. Just as the lyrics of the popular song Lonely Warrior go, “who said heroes can’t be ordinary souls?’’ We are all ordinary people doing our best for our passions, and together we can make extraordinary achievements.

5 . I was running late. My wife, Eleanor, and I had agreed to meet at the restaurant at seven o'clock, and it was already half past. I had a good excuse: A client meeting had run over, and I’d wasted no time getting to the dinner as quickly as possible.
She answered, “You never mean to be late.” Uh-oh, she was mad.
“Sorry,” I replied. “It was unavoidable.” I told her about the client meeting. Not only did my explanation not soothe her, it seemed to make things worse. And that started to make me angry.
Several weeks later, when I described the situation to a friend who is a professor of family therapy, Ken Hardy, he smiled. “You made a classic mistake,” he told me. “You’re stuck in your perspective,” he said. “You didn’t mean to be late. But that’s not the point. The point—and what’s important in your communication—is how your lateness affected Eleanor.”
When you’ve done something that upsets someone—no matter who’s right—always start the conversation by acknowledging how your actions affected the other person.
What I should have said to Eleanor is “I see that you’re angry. I’m sorry you’ve been waiting for me for 30 minutes. And it’s not the first time. It must seem that I think being with a client gives me permission to be late. That’s got to be frustrating.”
A.At that point, we are both ready to move on. |
B.When I arrived at the restaurant, I apologized and told my wife I didn’t mean to be late. |
C.In other words, I was focused on my intention, while Eleanor was focused on the consequences. |
D.After really understanding the consequences of my lateness on her, I’ve managed to be on time a lot more frequently. |
E.Save the discussion about your intentions for later. Much later. Maybe never. Because in the end, your intentions don’t matter much. |
F.What I have found is that once I’ve expressed my understanding of the consequences, there is no need for me to explain my intentions. |

How do you define success?
What do you think a successful person is? Someone who makes a lot of money? Someone who is remembered by future generations? Or someone who changes the world? A volunteer teacher and his students came to remind us of our more humble measures of success. Liang Jun sang the poem alongside a group of his students from the incredibly poor Wu Meng Mountain region in southwest China. The poem, by the famous poet Yuan Mei,
In the modern world, more and more individuals from rural areas
When we study human history, we come across names like Genghis Khan, Neil Armstrong and Mao Zedong. We credit these individuals with tremendous achievements, but we tend to forget the countless individuals
8 . She had been shopping with her Mom in Wal-Mart. She must have been six years old. A beautiful brown-haired, freckle-faced girl, bearing the image of innocence.
It was pouring heavily outside. We all stood there just inside the door of the Wal-Mart. We waited, some patiently, others annoyed because nature messed up their hurried day. I got lost in the sound and sight of the heavens washing away the dirt and dust of the world.
Her voice was so sweet that it broke the hypnotic trance (昏昏欲睡) we were all caught in. Mom, let's run through the rain," she said.
What?" Mom asked.
"Let's run through the rain!" she repeated.
"No, honey. We'll wait until it lets up a bit," Mom replied.
This young child waited about another minute and repeated: "Mom, let's run through the rain."
"We'll get soaked if we do," Mom said.
"No, we won't, Mom. That's not what you said this morning," the young girl said as she pulled her Mom's arm.
"This morning? When did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?"
Don't you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said, 'if God can get us through this, he can get us through anything!'"
The entire crowd stopped dead silent. I dare say you couldn't hear anything but the rain. We all stood silently. No one came in or left in the next few minutes. Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she would say.
Now, some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly. Some might even ignore what was said. But this was a moment of affirmation in a young child's life, a time when innocent trust can be nurtured (培育) so that it will bloom into faith.
"Honey, you are absolutely right. Let's run through the rain. If God lets us get wet, maybe we just need washing," Mom said. Then off they ran.
We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they rushed past the cars and, yes, through the puddles. They held their shopping bags over their heads just in case. They got soaked. But they were followed by a few who screamed and laughed like children all the way to their cars. And yes, I did. I ran, too. I got wet. I guess I just needed washing.

9 . After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two qualities make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance: curiosity and discontent. I have never known an outstanding man who lacked either. And I have never known an average man who had both. The two belong together.
Fortunately, curiosity and discontent don't have to be learned. We are born with them and need only recapture them. “The great man.” said Mencius, “is he who does not lose his child's heart.” Yet most of us do lose it. We stop asking questions.
Most of us meet new people, and new ideas, with hesitation.
How should you start? Modestly, so as not to become discouraged. I think of one friend who couldn't arrange flowers to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did it. Now she is one of the experts. writing books on flower arrangement. One way to begin is to answer your own excuse. You haven't any special ability? Most people don't: there are only a few geniuses. You haven't any time?
However you start, remember there is no better time to start then right now. for you'll never be more alive than you are at this moment.
A.We stop challenging custom. |
B.That's good, because it's always the people with no time who get things done. |
C.Either curiosity or discontent makes human being move forward. |
D.These deep human urges count for much more than ambition. |
E.But once having met and liked them, we think how terrible it would have been, had we missed the chance. |
F.Discontent made the great names unsatisfied. |
10 . An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer of his plans to leave the house building business and live a more leisurely life with his wife enjoying his extended family. He would miss the paycheck, but he needed to retire. They could get by.
The employer was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The carpenter said yes, but in time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He resorted to inferior workmanship and used cheap materials. It was an unfortunate way to end his career.
When the carpenter finished his work, the employer came to inspect the house and handed the front-door key to the carpenter. "This is your house," he said, "my gift to you."
What a shock! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently. Now he had to live in the home he had built none too well.
So it is with us. At important points we do not give the job our best effort. Then with a shock we look at the situation we have created and find that we are now living in the house we have built. If we had realized, we would have done it differently.
Think of yourself as the carpenter. Think about your house. Each day you hammer a nail, place a board, or erect a wall. Build wisely. It is the only life you will ever build. Even if you live it for only one day more, that day deserves to be lived with dignity.

A.better than his expectation | B.far from satisfactory |
C.a gift to the employer | D.built with heart and soul |
A.grateful | B.disappointed |

A.Don't cry over spilt milk. | B.Opportunity only knocks once. |
