1 . We’ve made a list of reasons why everyone should enrich their life by traveling around the world.

★Travel is easier than you think.

We believe that traveling around the world shouldn’t be hard.    1    Whether you choose to spend a few years or just a couple of months traveling this beautiful planet, it’s important to see what’s out there. It’s up to you to make the dream come true and take the first step.

★Travel is a good chance for learning.

Travel can provide great learning chances for children. Different cultures, good scenery and people can teach kids valuable life lessons and broaden their views.    2    

★Travel develops skills you didn’t know you had.

    3     Travel brings them to the surface and makes you smile, satisfied to have reached the mountain top, or helped a villager clean up after a storm, or even to have successfully ordered a meal at a restaurant in a foreign country.

★    4    

Meeting people from other cultures will teach you to look at the world in a different way. In fact, your view might have some major blind spots. Seeing the world for yourself will help you see the world differently.

★Travel is education.

    5     Travel teaches you economy, politics, history, geography, and sociology in a hands-on way no class will. Fortunately, the school of travel is always taking applications, no entrance exam required.

4 . In casual conversations, there is a seemingly simple question I can never answer without hesitating — “Where are you from?”

I could say I am from Thailand, where I was born. Or I am from Mexico, where I spent the majority of my childhood. Or I am from the US, whose language is rooted into my life. In my mind, none of these answers are satisfying enough. After all, to be from somewhere carries expectations of understanding “your” culture and “your” home.

I feel envious whenever my friends say they’re “going home” for school breaks. As a student who frequently moves, I have never seen my living space as “home”, but “shelter”, another location to stay in before I unavoidably move again.

So, does this mean I do not have, and will never have, a home? I resign myself to living with this sense of sadness, until very recently.

In my dorm, inside my drawer is a specially designed white bath towel that I have not used since I brought it with me from my parents’ house. One day, I took it out, but stopped after smelling the soft, sweet laundry detergent (洗衣粉), the one my parents used back in Thailand. I felt my eyes water as that random smell brought my mixed emotions to the surface: sadness and nostalgia, a strong feeling of missing home. I still avoid using that towel until now because I don’t want to replace the smell of nostalgia with my newly-bought detergent.

Sadly, even with this new discovery, I will still struggle when answering where I am from, and I will always feel a sense of loss in not having a physical home to “go back to”. Yet, in random moments, when a smell catches me off guard (让我猝不及防) with the memories it brings, I like to believe that the things I feel then are things people feel when they are home. And if these moments can make me smile, even with a sense of loss, what better home can I ask for?

5 . Who Moved My Cheese? is a motivational book about change in life and work. It shows you how to anticipate change, adapt to change, ________ change and be ready to change. This story takes less than an hour to read, but its unique ________ can last for a lifetime.

The story takes place in a Maze where ________ characters look for “Cheese”. Cheese is a metaphor (比喻) for what we want to have in ________, whether it is a job, recognition, spiritual peace, or even an ________ like jogging or golf. We ________ it because we believe it can make us happy. If we get it, we often become ________ it. And if we lose it, it can be ________. The “Maze” in the story is ________ metaphor, which means where you look you’re your “cheese.” It can be the organization you work in, or the ________ you live in. You will see that the two mice do ________ when they face change because they keep things simple, while the two little people’s complex brains and human emotions ________ things. We all know people are more intelligent than mice. ________, as you watch what the characters in the book do, and realize the mice and the little people ________ parts of ourselves, the simple and the complex, you can see it would be ________ to do the things in a simple way when things change. You can enjoy more success if you discover the secret, that is, make things simple.

7 .     1     We need them to be our guides on the twisting, sometimes difficult road we call life to shows just how far we can go, to help us know just how high we can climb.

And we need heroes today more than ever. Our modern society is terribly confused about the difference between a hero and a celebrity (名人). And the difference is significant. A celebrity is all about fame-temporary, superficial fame, usually for qualities that are easy to see: a pretty face, a great dance move.     2     —qualities beneath the surface that aren’t visible until they prompt action. Qualities like courage, hope, compassion (同情), and perseverance (毅力).

Heroes, real heroes, are all around us. They truly hold our world together, through their unselfish devotion to helping others, supporting families, teaching children, protecting the environment.     3     They just want to help. In so many ways, these unsung heroes steer the boat in which all of us sail.

Yet, young people hear a lot more about celebrities than about heroes.     4     The underlying message they get from all this is that their self-worth comes from what they buy-which drink, which shoes, which cell phone-not who they are down inside. Young people’s sense of their own potential for heroic qualities-their own power to make a positive difference in the world is lost.

Truth is, there is a potential hero, a future difference maker, in every young person. Each of them, from whatever background, is a large amount of untapped (未开发的) energy-a positive force who can do something to steer that communal boat that carries us all.     5    

9 . Smith Justice and his son were coming back from the dentist, when they saw a homeless man in the road. Smith _________ to give the man some money, but didn’t have any cash. His son suggested giving the man the 30 cents he had. But Smith was _________. He didn’t want to give this man just 30 cents since the man _________ needed all the help he could get. When I decided to major in English, I thought it would be fun. However, it turned out to be much     1    (hard) than I thought it would be. The differences in the language over thousands of hundreds of years made many passages hard     2    (understand). Trying to understand Shakespeare and Chaucer gave me a headache     3     reading Byron and Shelley also took lots of effort. However, there were times     4     I read passages that gave me wisdom(智慧).

One of these was by William Wordsworth. It went, “The best portion(部分) of a good man’s life: his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love.” The first time I read it, I was deeply impressed by the wisdom     5    (convey) in it. Over the years I began to fill my days     6     acts of kindness and love.

What would happen if everyone followed Wordsworth’s wisdom and lived the best part of     7    (they) life? What would happen if all of us     8    (practice) acts of kindness and love all our lives? Would we stop    9    (hate)? Would we put an end to war? Would this world     10    (transform) into a beautiful, loving place? Let’s all live our lives with acts of kindness and love.
