The rose bushes were finally in full bloom and were so fascinating on that spring morning. By     1     end of last spring ten bushes had been planted by the couple.

The sight of roses always brings to mind Wanda’s childhood     2     (memorial). The family had no money to buy extra things two     3     (decade) ago, so even a tired rose was something to value. Now they will gather large amounts of roses in their garden.

Seeing her precious first blooms go out of the door filled Wanda with regret, and a bit of selflessness. She knew it was “better to give than to receive”. However, what she wished was that she could have kept the roses for herself.

Later that day, the couple headed to the post office, where Wanda waited outside in the car.

Then out of     8     (expect), an older woman suddenly appeared at the open window. At the moment some fresh roses     9     (hold) by her. Then she gave them to her. She said, “These are for you. They’re my first blooms this spring.” The woman’s real motivation was to delight her.

Completely amazed, Wanda thanked the woman and bent for a moment to breathe in the rich fragrance (芳香). By the time she looked back, the mysterious visitor had left.

As far as Wanda was concerned, that special delivery changed her. She drew a conclusion that it made her     10     (convince) that the true meaning of giving others unexpected gifts was deep. Now, she always gives away her first blooms to others, as a reminder that someone is thinking of them.
