1 . In America, seldom do you go anywhere without hearing a principle called WIN-WIN. It sounds strange to me at first because throughout my childhood, I have always been taught to try everything possible to win an upper-hand, rather than to help other people win. However, as time goes by, I have gradually understood the essence (真谛) of WIN-WIN principle — it is the attitude of seeking mutual benefits.
When I was little, I used to play Chinese checkers (跳棋) which includes two basic tactics: One is to create paths for yourself; the other is to block the passages of your rival. Players may apply these two totally different approaches in the game, but the key for the player to win is to continuously create paths for him even if his opponent may take advantage of it. Finally he can always reach the destination a few steps ahead of the other player. Meanwhile, some player may take another approach to prevent his opponent from moving forward at all costs. In this way, he may get a short-term benefit, but couldn’t fix attention on the final goal. Thus, he would never truly develop further.
In the 1990s, a strategy called WIN-WIN became widespread in the western world. Its core is to achieve your objective while giving other people some benefits, so there is no real loser. One example of applying the WIN-WIN principle is the voluntary system in the US. Most Americans advocate the spirit of social service and voluntary contribution. In the US, schools and children organizations usually encourage and support kids to be engaged in community service so that the voluntary spirit can be enrooted in their minds from childhood. Moreover, a crucial standard for universities to judge new students is whether they have worked for the community or not.
In China, it’s quite usual that some people are too selfish and never take people’s interests into consideration, while someone who really has courage to do something for the public is often called “foolish” or “stupid”. Actually helping other people can be of great delight for the helper, for he can also learn something crucial for his life such as sympathy, care, devotion, etc. So only if you take other people’s interests into earnest consideration can you assure your own gain.

3 . Kala has deep ties to her Hawaiian roots. Her ancestors navigated (航行) the oceans for centuries using their knowledge of the stars, the sun, the currents and the wind. It’s not that she does it in a canoe without technology, but rather uses the natural technology around her. It’s called Way finding, and was taught to her by her father.
“My father was my foundation, my rock.” she says of her first voyage with him from Oahu to Lahaina in a traditional canoe. He taught her how to read the stars, the ocean swells and how to use them to hold the course. “Over 200 stars have specific names and purposes when you are Way finding. You have to look at each and determine if they are rising or setting. You know this star and the direction it represents. If you can do that, you can use it as a tool to orient (确定方向).” Kala added.
Kala Tanaka sailed the canoe in the ocean for up to three weeks. During the day, Kala used the sun until it hit a certain height. When she got closer to land, she looked for certain species of land birds and clouds that indicated there was land below. When Kala sailed she felt “I feel very connected to the crew and the canoe. We’re a family.” The longer voyage required Kala to spend hours studying the day and the night skies. It was demanding physical work. But it also had its moments of awe. For Kala, the beauty was in tying together the past and the present to enjoy the moment. So when she was not sailing, she was teaching Way finding skills to school-aged children in hopes of preserving the skills her ancestors relied on.
It’s easy to be lost in the immediacy of the technology of our day, to be consumed by screens and miss the nature that unfolds around us. But if we will take the time to look up, to see the stars and the sun, the way the clouds move, the miracle of life beneath and above us, we will discover something deep inside us, something that will always lead to happiness.

It was the middle of winter some 30 years ago. I was a young father with three little children depending on me. My college education, however, wasn’t helping me to find a good job in our depressed area. My work as a teacher had dried up and now I was working in a saw mill (锯木厂) for just above the minimum wage.
As I got ready to go to work I wrapped band-aids (创可贴) around my fingers and put more in my pockets. Cutting and piling wood for 8 hours a day had caused my fingers to split and bleed at their tips in the cold, dry, winter air. Then I walked down to my car in the snow and hoped it would start.
That day at work was harder than normal. The machines kept breaking down. And we had to rush to catch back up as the wood piled up. On top of it all the heaters in the building weren’t working and we could see our breath as we spent hours chopping, piling, carrying, and packaging the hard wood flooring to be shipped out.
When the work day finally ended, I walked tiredly toward the time clock, took off my work gloves and inspected my aching fingers. The splits were worse than ever and I had bled through the band-aids again. I tried to straighten out but my bad back cramped (绞痛) up as I did. I started my car and drove back home. I looked at the snow and blinked back tears. I wondered how long I could keep doing this, if things would ever get any better, and why life was so hard.
I tried to put a smile on my face as I opened my front door, but instead one appeared naturally. My daughter ran up to me, yelling “Daddy”, and wrapped her little arms around my neck. I lifted her up and my heart exploded with love.

5 . Our children usually benefit from our wisdom and experience, and there are occasions when the tables are turned.
Children are constantly amazed by the world round them and are always stopping to notice. They can spend endless moments watching the behavior of ants or other insects as we become impatient. The world is continuously new to them — as it should be to us if we weren’t so busy and distracted.
Another experience struck me over the past few weeks. We have new neighbors who are renting the house next door for six weeks. They have three children. Last holiday my grandchildren came to spend time with me and spent many hours playing with the kids next door, even though they had never met them before, even though they would probably never see them again, even though they knew nothing about them!
None of those details matter to children. They don’t see black or white, or any other differences that sometimes separate us as adults. There is something so touching about their innocence (天真), and about their instant connection without any hindrances. In every child, they see a potential friend, someone to play and hang out with. They only see similarities. It may sound simple. Life is more complex, but we can learn from their eagerness to connect, from their true blindness to any difference, and from their expectations of good.
We have become too judgmental to give people a chance. It’s possible that if our “neighbors” actually become unchanging, the relationship will change. It can get more complex. With more contact, maybe some personality differences will surface. Maybe it’s the temporary nature of the situation that allows the uninhibited (无拘无束) play to develop.
But it doesn’t really matter, because the point is they gave them a chance. They didn’t come in with any prejudices (偏见). They didn’t have any pre-existing concepts of who they would meet, what this person stood for, or who or what they couldn’t stand.

One day, a man in a nice suit who seemed to have a respectable job went into a restaurant after the busy work in the evening, with a little tiredness on his face. “What a busy day!” he said to himself in a low voice. He sat down at a table and ordered a big pizza at once in order to eat some food quickly and then go home.
After a little while, another man who looked homeless with worn-out clothes came into the restaurant and sat near the nice suit man with a smile on his face. The nice suit man didn’t give back a smile with respect, and nor did he cast a glance at the homeless man.
Ten minutes later, the pizza arrived and was put in the middle of the table. The nice suit man couldn’t wait to eat it, so he grabbed (吃) it without hesitation because of hunger. A few seconds later, the homeless man took a piece of the pizza and chewed (咀嚼) it slowly with a happy smile on his face. “I won’t be angry about this, because he is a homeless person. It won’t really matter if he doesn’t continue to eat my second piece of pizza,” the nice suit man thought.
Then the homeless man took the second piece and third piece during the next ten minutes with a very satisfied smile. The nice suit guy finally got angry and shouted, “Why don’t you order one by yourself? Why can’t you stop eating my pizza?” At the same time, the waiter came and held a pizza to the nice suit man, saying, “Sir, this one is yours and that one just now was this gentleman’s.” The nice suit man felt a little embarrassed and said to the homeless man, “Why didn’t you tell me the one just now was yours? I am sorry to have shouted at you.” The homeless man was still calm and in peace with a kind voice, “Because you looked hungry and I like to share my food with you.” The nice suit man felt ashamed and he decided to give his whole one to the homeless man.

When I was in Grade One, most of my classmates didn’t like to play with me because I was always shy and silent. However, I always got high grades in both exams and activities. Gradually, I got the respect of my classmates. And my teachers repeatedly praised me and asked me to assist my classmates in their study. Besides, there were various competitions in my school and I was always chosen as the representative of our class.
However, life is not always happy. There are times when we experience ups and downs. When I was in Grade Three, a student named Vannilyn came to our school, and she was placed in the class next to mine. Months passed and the result of the mid-term examination was released. I was still the No. 1 in my class and I heard that Vannilyn was the No. 1 in her class. However, I just ignored her and in my thought, I was still superior because I was a seasoned pupil.
There were times when I didn’t want to open my books to read and study for our next day’s lesson. When I did my homework, I became careless and I didn’t even mind whether my handwriting looked beautiful or not. What’s worse, I gradually became addicted to computer games. And because of that, my teachers began to criticise me and what made me angry was that they always mentioned Vannilyn in front of me!
I got annoyed every time my teachers compared me with Vannilyn. I was discouraged and no longer followed their instructions. At the end of the first term, the principal’s assistant announced the final examination result, and I still ranked No. 1. Therefore, I became prouder and told myself that I would still be the best student even if I didn’t study hard.
